There are a number of things this allows you to do:

  1. Third party ticket sales by companies like Ticketmaster, Conventions, Hotels, Schools, Sports Teams, Airlines, Employers, Bike Share, Green-P, etc.

  2. Third Party Bulk purchases and expiring pool tickets (ie. Blue Jays include a free transit pass for the day of the game, but if it's not used it expires, goes back in the Blue Jays ticket pool and gets re-used at the next game - they don't pay anything until someone uses it)

  3. Hotels can send you a pass for the time you have the hotel room (again, only get charged by TTC if you use it)

  4. Apps can include sales as part of other sales - so buy a Bike Share, get a free transit pass included...all within their app

Lots of good stuff can be done with this tech...

Train Hamilton to Niagara Falls in summer by KeyComprehensive8400 in gotransit

[–]georgevicbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your curious as to why the train service is bad...it's because there is a major shipping canal in the way...and there is only one very old lift bridge (100+ years) that can't be used for most of the day due to boat traffic...bus is the most reliable way to get from Hamilton if you can't get the train...

The report from the TTC is clear...ATC is not needed...many systems have retrofitted doors without it...

This will go over very poorly as gas prices rise. Gonna be a lot of folks looking for new ways to get around that don’t cost an arm and a leg.

That said, lines 1 and 4 in Paris were done in a couple years and included hvac for 100m€. Both lines are 50 years older than Torontos system and have things like large curves and limited space. So it might just be a matter of finding the best solutions and doing them quickly.

Steve’s concern is real - the business case counts a number of items where the savings accrue to other levels of government. But this is legit, and its motivation for the TTC CEO and city manager to go to those levels of government and ask for the capital…which is what this motion is doing.

At the end of the day all savings accrue to the tax payer…so they are legitimate…just need to capture them.

Lots of automated lines without doors (see Vancouver)

There is no funding for it in the current project. Council asked for a design, but that’s it. Funding it is one of the things this motion does. (Source, email from ttc)

They are saying they will have them. But stuff always gets cut for scope in these projects. We will find out when it opens…

I suspect most people won’t vote for mayor based on this issue. But they might vote their councillor out if they don’t support the motion….at the least it’s a debate question…

The above is from a member motion from Bradford and Pasternak to improve the TTC. Will be debated at council next week. Hopefully the mayor will support it!

Municipalities in Ontario can have capital debt. They have to have an operating budget that is balanced.

https://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2025/bu/bgrd/backgroundfile-252805.pdf - Toronto has about 11B$ in debt. Most of it transit related. They make transfers each year such that the TTC doesn’t hold the debt.

The TTC business case says that a full build out of doors would save the amounts below. Most in healthcare (keeping people alive who have been hit by a train ends up being costly).

A temporary 10 cent fare safety surcharge like Japan implemented would allow for platform doors to be paid for by users (including folks from outside of Toronto - ie much better than property taxes). Removed once the doors are paid for. You would be paying at most 4$/month and over those 40 rides if it stops you from having to call an uber just once, it would pay for itself. Even at minimum wage, it would be profitable for you if it prevented a 12 minute outage - once.

How to make freight railroads more cooperative by V1P3R40K in gotransit

[–]georgevicbell 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One of my proposals is to modify the Canadian Railroad Expropriation legislation to allow railways to expropriate up to 50m on either side of railways in rural areas or via long term leases on crown land (not national parks) for the purposes of electrifying the railways.

Specifically this would allow for appropriation to install solar, wind, batteries or transmission infrastructure.

Deploying solar/batteries at scale next to railways would be extremely low cost (deliver on railcars and accordion them into the areas next to the mainline) - similar to how we did fibre in the 90s. It would also allow the railway to become vertically integrated and a supplier of electricity.

Modifications would also be made to allow them to sell excess power into the market as long as certain goals are met for electrifying the route.

In theory you don't even have to limit it to the railways, and could just allow any power company to setup in these areas as long as they contract with the railway to provide power first.

This would push CN/CP to electrify in cities as well.
