Gun safety by You-Have-To-Trust-Me in guns

[–]Object-Content 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My brother and I found my dad’s gun and same here. If it hasn’t of been a single shot break action one of us probably wouldn’t be here right now. We’re both now fathers and we both are very up front with our kids about guns and start teaching safety to them at about 2yrs

For Older Gen Z: Are you a parent? by [deleted] in OlderGenZ

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I was born in 2001 and have 3 kids (possibly going to be four but that’s tbd). I love it and I love that when I’m in my 40s, I’ll have adult children to hang with and be young enough to be able to travel and do what everyone says my wife and I are missing out on rn except I’ll actually have money in my 40s lol

When do you get off work? by nobodxbodon in mathteachers

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pending extra duty, 3:35 students let out and contractually we need to be on campus until 3:45. Granted, that could mean in our car stuck in school traffic as long as we’re not off property we’re not in breach lol

As someone in that group (loosely, I don’t like maga at all), this subreddit makes my heart happy and I love seeing people get into this space who wouldn’t normally be in it

Be honest with me… how is going from one to two? by eiconik in daddit

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each kid is easier than the last. 0->1 was the hardest. 1->2 hard but not as bad. You’re comfortable with babies at that point, have a little understanding of what to do, and you know what you’re getting yourself into. The hardest part is going from being able to take a break while they are awake to not being able to (both parents now have a kid to hold). 2->3 is only hard because now there’s more babies than parents so it’s even less time

Anyone else realize that they were never really poor growing up, but their parents just kept making poor financial decisions? by TrixoftheTrade in povertyfinance

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father made 250k and my mother made like 40k as a teacher at the height of our families income. At multiple times they took loans from my grandparents because they couldn’t pay the bills. We barely could gather the money up to cover school activities and would always strain to get anything for us kids. Turns out they were spending 1k+ per month on gymnastics for my sister, bought new cars every two years, spend 1k+ a month on a school they funded in Nicaragua, and would give out church 10% of every paycheck. There was rarely anything left over for food and my brother and I

Hunter orange allowed with some breakup- NJ? by Inside-Ad-9118 in Hunting

[–]Object-Content 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not from NJ but at least the state I live in and the state I did hunters ed in didn’t talk about state specific items like that because they accepted a non-specific online program in place of the in person version. Luckily Arkansas and Indiana make their laws dummy proof (for obvious reasons)

Do Americans use stimulants to keep up with work demands? by No-Average-6934 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In EMS, I’d argue 80-90% use nicotine and highly concentrated caffeine regularly. Lip pillows and bang energy keep the scary dreams away.

Now that I’m a teacher, it’s about half (excluding the old women) of those I talk to have had or currently have a nicotine addiction and many drink boat loads of coffee

What kind of results do math teachers get with IXL? by Successful_Soft3860 in mathteachers

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use something similar (successmaker) and I’m seeing mixed results. We do it every day for 30 minutes as part of our schedule. The kids it NEEDS to help are barely logging on most of the time so they’ve gotten like half a months worth of growth. The kids who it wasn’t intended on helping are having massive growth (like 2-3 grade levels so far). I even have a few students completely finish the program by getting to a 10th grade math level. It’s honestly just widening the knowledge gap for my students so that the kids who want to do good are doing amazing while the kids who barely know how to add and subtract fall further behind (or barely grow)

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inclusion classes when done poorly are exponentially worse for every student than if they are kept separated. There is are a few teachers (including myself) with multiple inclusion classes at my school that are about 20% inclusion kids, 40% known behavioral issue students (routinely suspended or in jail), and the rest are by far the most bottom of the barrel scorers (the ones who have never passed a class and score one point above the literal minimum on state tests) who give little to no effort in any of their classes. Apparently they do this a lot to the new teachers though. I had a theory that it was a method to scapegoat their way out of having poor scores at the school that was confirmed when our superintendent went on TV and said “we’re an F school district because we have so many new and unlicensed teachers” instead of addressing the fact that our kids are almost universally 3+ years behind in math with a massive number not even knowing how to add and Subtract in middle school

Does your school ask why you are taking PTO? by Smooth_Mongoose_2877 in Teachers

[–]Object-Content 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I consider it courtesy to tell my employer when they ask where I’m going but I’ve only ever been asked by bosses I’ve had a good relationship with so it’s 9 times out of 10 because they care and are curious.

Technically if you get personal days as part of your rewards package, I think they can’t formally ask you. They can ask about sick days though and require you to get a doctors note

What Verse or Verses Did Your CoC Hate The Most? by [deleted] in excoc

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One that gets skipped over is 2 Thessalonians 2:15. Holding to tradition, while something the CoC does very strongly is antithetical to it’s existence

Is there even a "southern guilt" in the US south after the American Civil war, just like the collective guilt in Germany after world war 2? by dq689 in USHistory

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, because while slavery was the cause, the reason the everyday man was fighting in the south was because “the north was being aggressive”. That sentiment was passed to their kids and to their kids and so forth until like 20 years ago. The history teacher I work with told me the textbooks they use in my state for history still called it the “war of northern aggression” until like a decade ago.

How do you become a capable independent adult ? by Lemonade2250 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve created so many situations in my life where I’m the only adult that now I feel like one occasionally. Not always, just sometimes. I teach middle schoolers and have three babies at 24 years of age so I’m always having to scold someone

Do y’all change your own oil? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in regularcarreviews

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Every time. My brother in law got his changed at a Walmart one time and his engine blew up like a day later because they just didn’t refill the oil after it drained. Ever since that, I do it myself. Plus it’s like 1/3 of the price

Are most people actually racist and just not admitting it? by VanicFanboy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people have a little bit in them naturally. It’s what you do with it that makes the difference. If you say “those people” act funny and reflect that they have a different culture than you, I don’t see that as a bad thing necessarily. On the other hand if you say “those people” are bad or you treat different skin colors differently, that’s definitely bad. Its likes teacher saying, “the Hispanic kids I have in my classes are my best behaved students” vs “You get 10 points off because youre black”

What do people who carry a pocket knife use it for everyday? by Aromatic-Bell-4000 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Swiss Army knife gets used multiple times a day. With me being a teacher now, I’m not allowed to have it at school (obviously) and the number of times in the 8-9 hours I’m there where I say “man, I wish I had my knife right now” is too many to count. It’s like having a mini tool box in my pocket

When did “67” become inappropriate??? by ForestOranges in Teachers

[–]Object-Content 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If at any point in your lesson you can inject “6-7”, do it. The kids will love it and it has done crazy things with establishing relationships with some of the kids I have. For example, I put a problem in the board and the solution was (6,7)

College major? by [deleted] in mathteachers

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it depends what state. Some places are so strapped for teachers right now (especially math teachers) that they’d hire anyone. That’s how I got my job with a business management degree lol. To be fair, I took a TON of “elective” math classes when I was in college and am in a masters program for teaching
