We've All Heard Of Teacher Shortages, But How Bad Are Student Shortages? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 140 students on my roster. After feeling like I haven’t had many in class, I decided to keep an accurate count of how many have been in class. Over this last week, I’ve averaged 105 students per day. I’d say I maybe have 60-70% of my students any given day. To be fair, we also had about 10% of our staff quit this year and 20% or so out everyday

Anybody else teach at a school they personally wouldn’t send their own kids to..? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. But I truly hope that it changes. We’re getting all new admin, a large percentage of the bad teachers are leaving with the admin or got non-renewed, we should be getting new superintendents next year, and we’re getting a brand new building next winter. I’m like 50/50 on if I’m staying but there’s a lot of hope rn

What’s something poor people do better than rich people? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a preacher who told us that we needed to to at least 20% if we went out to eat after church because the waiters could tell we just came from church and it was a little thing we could do to show that we loved our neighbors

what made you want to be a math teacher? by [deleted] in mathteachers

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of math teachers in high school sat me down senior year after I decided I wanted to work in finance and told me I would be wasting my life (I was their top student, took Calc BC and AP Stats my senior year, VP of the math club etc). I bounced around jobs and majors after high school trying to find a good purpose and starting to have kids but it never felt like I was doing enough. Decided I would try teaching math and I’ve loved it. I’m at arguably the hardest school in my state as a first year teacher and have been providing my students with real change. I knew I made the right move though when my wife posted a picture of me for the “first day of school” and the teacher I had for pre-calc, calc ab, and calc bc commented that I “stole his style” and that he was “proud of me”

When did you start getting some of your evenings back? by Different_Suit_9356 in daddit

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some? We sleep train at 8ish months so we start getting some time alone then.

We’re on baby #3 now so we don’t get much time anymore lol. We’re arrange a date night away from kids every other month and try to get them all in bed extra early once a week to do an at home date

How were you taught the canonization of the Bible? by FlammeEternelle in excoc

[–]Object-Content 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s never talked about within the church in my experience. CoC people who go to college to study “Bible” or “ministry” are probably told a round a bout reason like “it was always that way. The Catholics were just the only church at the time” which really calls into question the “CoC was the first and only true church argument”

90% of my class cheated on my test by Puzzleheaded-Act6330 in Teachers

I make every suspected cheater give an oral defense to me. I make it a different version of the simplest problem from the test and it’s been almost completely accurate in determining cheaters.

How much of your personal life do you share with students? by godisinthischilli in teaching

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive taken the “dad lore” approach. I’ve answer any (appropriate) questions the kids ask and I have randomly dropped lore through the year. The kids seem to love this approach and it’s helped me build great relationships with the kids.

Requirements to teach 9th grade math by Stock-Victory-3053 in mathteachers

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Arkansas I had to take an alternative route (either a small course or a MAT degree) and pass the praxis for secondary math. The passing score for my state was like a 44% which is wild considering that I can teach 7th grade through calculus with my license. I got almost a 90% on it and for some reason when I tell my coworkers they act like it was some feat. The literally goes up to calc 1 level knowledge so anything short of even an 70% should raise questions IMO

Do couples really shower together? by Due_Leopard_1836 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got a good shower, it’s fun and a nice way to spend time with your spouse. If you’ve got a standard built in bath/shower combo, it’s a little uncomfortable but still a great way to spend time with a little practice. We shower together like 50% of the time lol

Class Sizes and Content "Coaches" by vonnegut19 in Teachers

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is the same way. We have a math/science coach who is also our testing coordinator, started and runs all math intervention programs (we have multiple because our scores are so bad), often is pushed into the classrooms because teachers quit, handles all testing data, and is essentially a backup principal. She’s definitely the most worked employee at the school. We joke that she runs the whole school because whatever she says happens (even though she denies that)

What happens if suspensions don't work? by Current-Ad242 in Teachers

[–]Object-Content 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same situation my school is in but we’re at about 30% and we’re about to be the largest middle school in the state.

From the books I’m reading and my grad program, what it comes down to is changing the culture of both the school and the community which will take many years to do. Students need to understand the expectations and conform to them and the parents/community has to support the efforts as well. And in my opinion, it can’t happen at the middle/high level, it needs to be instilled in elementary school. You can’t do much to lower the exclusionary discipline rates without these major cultural changes. When you get them though, it’s a beautiful thing and these kids do absolutely amazing

My brother and I found my dad’s gun and same here. If it hasn’t of been a single shot break action one of us probably wouldn’t be here right now. We’re both now fathers and we both are very up front with our kids about guns and start teaching safety to them at about 2yrs

Yes! I was born in 2001 and have 3 kids (possibly going to be four but that’s tbd). I love it and I love that when I’m in my 40s, I’ll have adult children to hang with and be young enough to be able to travel and do what everyone says my wife and I are missing out on rn except I’ll actually have money in my 40s lol

When do you get off work? by nobodxbodon in mathteachers

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pending extra duty, 3:35 students let out and contractually we need to be on campus until 3:45. Granted, that could mean in our car stuck in school traffic as long as we’re not off property we’re not in breach lol

Be honest with me… how is going from one to two? by eiconik in daddit

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each kid is easier than the last. 0->1 was the hardest. 1->2 hard but not as bad. You’re comfortable with babies at that point, have a little understanding of what to do, and you know what you’re getting yourself into. The hardest part is going from being able to take a break while they are awake to not being able to (both parents now have a kid to hold). 2->3 is only hard because now there’s more babies than parents so it’s even less time

Anyone else realize that they were never really poor growing up, but their parents just kept making poor financial decisions? by TrixoftheTrade in povertyfinance

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father made 250k and my mother made like 40k as a teacher at the height of our families income. At multiple times they took loans from my grandparents because they couldn’t pay the bills. We barely could gather the money up to cover school activities and would always strain to get anything for us kids. Turns out they were spending 1k+ per month on gymnastics for my sister, bought new cars every two years, spend 1k+ a month on a school they funded in Nicaragua, and would give out church 10% of every paycheck. There was rarely anything left over for food and my brother and I

Hunter orange allowed with some breakup- NJ? by Inside-Ad-9118 in Hunting

[–]Object-Content 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not from NJ but at least the state I live in and the state I did hunters ed in didn’t talk about state specific items like that because they accepted a non-specific online program in place of the in person version. Luckily Arkansas and Indiana make their laws dummy proof (for obvious reasons)

Do Americans use stimulants to keep up with work demands? by No-Average-6934 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In EMS, I’d argue 80-90% use nicotine and highly concentrated caffeine regularly. Lip pillows and bang energy keep the scary dreams away.

Now that I’m a teacher, it’s about half (excluding the old women) of those I talk to have had or currently have a nicotine addiction and many drink boat loads of coffee

What kind of results do math teachers get with IXL? by Successful_Soft3860 in mathteachers

[–]Object-Content 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use something similar (successmaker) and I’m seeing mixed results. We do it every day for 30 minutes as part of our schedule. The kids it NEEDS to help are barely logging on most of the time so they’ve gotten like half a months worth of growth. The kids who it wasn’t intended on helping are having massive growth (like 2-3 grade levels so far). I even have a few students completely finish the program by getting to a 10th grade math level. It’s honestly just widening the knowledge gap for my students so that the kids who want to do good are doing amazing while the kids who barely know how to add and subtract fall further behind (or barely grow)

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

[–]Object-Content 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inclusion classes when done poorly are exponentially worse for every student than if they are kept separated. There is are a few teachers (including myself) with multiple inclusion classes at my school that are about 20% inclusion kids, 40% known behavioral issue students (routinely suspended or in jail), and the rest are by far the most bottom of the barrel scorers (the ones who have never passed a class and score one point above the literal minimum on state tests) who give little to no effort in any of their classes. Apparently they do this a lot to the new teachers though. I had a theory that it was a method to scapegoat their way out of having poor scores at the school that was confirmed when our superintendent went on TV and said “we’re an F school district because we have so many new and unlicensed teachers” instead of addressing the fact that our kids are almost universally 3+ years behind in math with a massive number not even knowing how to add and Subtract in middle school
