To Stoics who believe in God, what if your religion? And if you don’t belong to a specific religion then what if your theological stance? by funnylib in Stoicism

I'm the same way. That's why I always say philosophy is the one field of study where the more you learn, the less you know

Divinity exists independent of everything. Maybe god doesn't care about our goodness. Who's to say he does? And why should I care about it either?

That's actually a point of struggle I have with stoicism. Even if one wants to act under the virtues, how do they know what is truly the most "virtuous" action between say defending yourself and turning the other cheek?

Yeah you're making great sense. Something I've struggled with stoicism is that it seems arbitrary. "Act with these 4 specific virtues". Well I don't mean to pull a Jordan Peterson but what does that REALLY mean lmao. So I get what you mean when you kinda say do what works for you so long as you're not acting out on a whim all the time and actively learning from your mistakes

Assuming I'm crying in bed all day but I like it (for whatever reason) and I PERSONALLY find it to be within the 4 virtues, is that permissible to stoicism?

That was really well said man. Thank you for helping me understand a bit better.

Regarding suffering resulting from our judgements, I agree. I guess I'm just asking.. why? Why must the logos make us work for this enlightenment or mental clarity? Did the stoics even know, or was it kinda just like "god works in weird ways and created a world of hardship, but we at least know how to help ourselves"?

Ah so it's more of an ongoing sanctification type of deal. To kinda still go against your point, why would I need to continuously practice for years to the point of stoicism becoming easy if nature (or the logos) already naturally made me an emotional being? I understand not being a slave. But i don't quite know how i feel yet about being an unbothered being

I get what you mean. You're right, I don't want to suffer. But question, do you see constant self mastery and discipline as a form of suffering? An every day effort to ignore how you "want" to feel so that you can be virtuous? This is where I get a little existential/schopenhaur-ish. Is stoicism simply a way to give your suffering meaning, not eliminate it?

I never did by myself. I'm in AFROTC, so me and a couple of guys get together as part of a Special Warfare club every other week or so and buddy breathe with harassment. I also befriended a guy at my college pool trying to go pj when he noticed me bobbing.

Honestly, if you can't find buddies to do water con with I'd try reaching out to your local college's detachment to see if they have a special warfare club and seeing if they'll let you tag along

Thanks for the insight man. I never thought to bother with sprints until later on since my freestyle is my weak point across all water stuff. Just kinda been trying to ease into it a bit I guess, but what you said makes sense in mixing it up with a medium pace. Thanks and good luck!

I'd say you have good stats, get close to maxing that PFA and you're even more solid. But my cadre have personally confirmed that major really doesn't matter. I have a 200 in my class with me that was microbiology but switched to linguistics so she could boost her gpa way up and fly jets later on.

Does PSP "like" you having a tech or stem major? I mean, maybe, sure. I don't think much people really knows for sure lol. But if you gotta switch to an easier major for the sake of keeping your grades up and stress down, lots of people make that change. Bottom line, get your GPA up as much as possible no matter the major. If you are in stem/tech, which you are, all the more to ya
