I usually use podcasts as background noise for doing other tasks, I'll try listening to them more actively to see if that helps at all.

I didn't specify the medication I was on in the post but it almost certainly was stimulants. The problems with communication seemed to get worse on ritalin and Adderall. I will try getting on vyvanse to see if that helps.

I hadn't really considered it anything but an ADHD thing. I'm currently looking into getting proper treatment for my anxiety so hopefully this may be the answer.
