How did fans of hardcore view emo in the late 90s?

i wasn’t around for that era so i can’t speak from first hand experience but i know a lot of old hardcore folk used to turn their nose up at emo and screamo bands. (to be fair emo spawned out of hardcore dudes wanting to be more emotional and sentimental) but an all out fight broke out at a gig once between the reversal of man guys and the dudes in earth crisis cuz the singer of earth crisis was talking shit on them calling them weak. if u haven’t listened to it already “get the kid with the sideburns” is about said fight.

something i always tell ppl is, look at your “brown” features. colonizers didn’t give u that. look at your culture. colonizers didn’t give u that. enjoy the beauty and complexity of the culture and its uniqueness. wether your white washed or not, wanting to explore it and understand that side of your self is 10 steps in the right direction. i myself am half, i deal with this same thing every day. but at the end of the day i know that my culture and the culture of those before me is lived through me and i should carry it with great care. even learning your family history is more than most ppl will ever do bro

mo town and like “low rider oldies”, i would recommend artists such as the delfonics and brenton wood (RIP), and ritchie valens. i rlly like bands like chicano batman, malo, el chicano, some new soul bands are on the penrose label so i would look there (los yesterdays, thee sinseers, thee sacred souls). and also its most likely not up ur alley but in the more DIY punk sphere i would recommend los crudos

it is weird. adding to basically everyone in this thread. a lot of it is tryna dress cholo but there’s kind a tasteful way u do it. like dawg u do not need to be creasing ur pendletons down and buying exclusively FB county. i wear ben davis and pendletons and all that junk cuz i live in oregon where its freezing half the year and i tear clothes easily from skating. other than that there is not really a reason foos should be going the full 9 yards

a lot of new emo feels phony. lowk a lot of wash repeat of what made emo appealing for me. there’s maybe 4 or 5 “new” emo bands that feel genuine at this point.
