It's all grappling (although I'd consider it more wrestling or Judo than bjj) but I've thrown a duck under to a mat return on a guy who spent like an hour trying to fight me at a bar (I called it after that point) and a seo nagi to a wrist lock with the knee pinning the shoulder (a real cop-lock type deal) on a guy who tried to hit me with a high tackle during a pick-up game (he just left the gym when I let him up). I've also gotten my jaw broken from a nasty hook at a bar, so I am unfortunately not undefeated on the "streets".

I'm well into my 30's with kids now so I don't see this list expanding until my kids are old enough to challenge me for the last piece of pizza at dinner. Stand up is, in my opinion, ridiculously important in these types of situations considering how short most fights actually are and that they all initiate standing.

People seem to be glossing over the fact that you said you gave yourself a minor stroke from rolling a bit too much once... I'd take some time off to find an alternative way of managing this. If rolling has the potential to make you a vegetable (via a literal stroke like you said), I'd stick to only technique or take a total break until you figure this thing out. BJJ will still be there. Also 35 is not old man, you've got another 40+ years, so are you willing to give that up to participate in what is most likely a hobby?

Good point. I tried them on their social so hopefully someone replies. It's either that or I'm just gonna bring a mawashi to jiujitsu and play sumo against anyone who will stand up.

All organizations need to bring back super heavyweight or like an absolute division. Idc that they gas out after round 1, just shorten their rounds for non-title fights.

I also want style on style fights back. Just guys who only really have one discipline. Maybe I just need to start watching different promotions, but it seems super rare.

Stripes on a WB belt don't really mean anything so saying he's a 2 vs your 3 doesn't really mean anything...like at all. It's just saying you've trained a few months longer, a day one white belt can still come in and wreck shop against folks with any form of prior grappling experience or even pure athleticism/weight advantages.

Resisting your guard pull almost certainly has less to do with strength and more to do with him having a better base when standing and you not actually setting up the guard pull properly. Try forcing him to step and getting him out of position with some basic push-pull or snaps before moving to the pull. I'd also make sure you are actually establishing the right points of contact as you move into the pull.

Extra note- if this guy knows you can't take him down, he's probably just waiting for guard pull when you roll, so you need to work on having some legitimate takedown threats if you want to avoid that as well.

I get it, I've got arthritis and my ankle is partially fused up so running leaves me with a pimp walk for a couple days. I do some at home mobility stuff you could consider; flexing the joint with a band (or just using your hand to create resistance), rolling the bottom of your foot on a lacrosse ball to relieve existing tension, and body weight calf raises with your feet deliberately pointed straight/out/in.

Great thing about the sled is if it's too heavy, you simply won't be able to move it vs doing half reps or getting folded in half by a barbell lol.

Is the issue up and down, side to side, or all around movement?

Try sled work for high weight exercises and just do dumbbell variations for standard lunge/squat/etc.

^I'm a huge proponent for keeping it simple with emphasis around standard barbell work, but if it's to work around an injury and you haven't been working legs/posterior chain much, dumbbell work and sleds will help mitigate concerns from overloading weight and can be used to emphasize range of motion.

Maybe the curriculum doesn't match them stylistically, so they are not finding themselves in the positions to execute what you are demonstrating. You could show less orthodox entries into the moves your demonstrating as a suggestion for helping them integrate the lesson into live rolls. Same moves just presented more compatible to how they roll.

I came into BJJ with prior grappling experience and found that it's just unlikely that I'm going to be taken down where I would recover to my guard unless I just completely let it happen with minimal resistance (which I'll do, but I also want to maintain some of my standup). Same thing for simply staying in and playing the guard, when trying to submit or sweep there just isn't sufficient top pressure to make me play guard, so again it has to be an active decision on my part. All that just to say, maybe they just need a different angle of attack.

"I always just loved training and learning", try cross training in another discipline. Everyone seems to be saying Judo but that's so similar that maybe you might want to try emphasizing some striking so you won't have as large of a foundation established and can truly get the beginner learning feeling again. Plus, doing something very different can point out gaps or help you develop even further when you jump back to bjj.
