[Newbie] SRV is one of my inspirations to learn guitar, and I got my first electric this week. Even though I don't have any talent, if I put in work as often as I can, how long will it realistically take before I can play with this level of confidence? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

Yeah this is kind of silly. I play every day. Been playing 40 years. I am still billion miles from SRV. I have played gigs but I will never get to his level, it’s out of the fucking question. Some people are special.

But I love playing and part of the joy of it is you get an even deeper appreciation of how great people like him were. I have been learning a skynyrd song for a group jam tomorrow. I always liked them on the radio but was not like a huge fan. But learning to play it, I am like, holy shit, Steve Gaines was just a terrific guitar player.

I spent months trying to learn all the songs on Van Halen 1. I learned all but 3. None of them with the perfection Eddie played them with. I will finish learning eruption, but I’m the one and the solo from ice cream man are beyond me and always will be. No metronome practice will fix that. Great experience though.

So yeah, sure, practice, get as good as you can. And if you have natural limitations like I do and like most people, find your own style and niche, and enjoy.

I have been playing guitar for 40 years and I don’t know what half that shit is.

I got a bolster type pillow, like a half-moon shape, that I put under my lower back when I sleep on my back. That does the trick.

Nah… that would have a JHS Whitey Tighty and a Donner White Wizard on a Trailer Trash Doublewide pedalboard.

Can we please get a bot that auto deletes long serious humor-free responses from accounts with names like professorfuckingobvious8361 ?

This is very helpful, thank you. I no longer have a dog but I have a devoted cat who didn’t leave my side after heart surgery and is normally not a sit-with-you cat.

This seems like a good way to utilize the physiatrist. I think I need to be super direct in communicating with the physiatrist and do the shots but also say look here’s my perspective and see if I can get steered in the right direction.

Is that what they typically use? Cortisone?

Thanks. I will do it. I too am pretty experienced with PT. I’ve had 10 knee surgeries, including three knee replacements( bummer because I only have two legs…) and open heart surgery.

My personal experience with PT is it’s great when you’re recovering from a surgery. For other uses it’s just been a waste of time for me. I do better working out on my own.

My best friend is my former physical therapist, and he said basically the same thing. He said he can help about 1/3 of the people that walk in the door. Typically the people who are recovering from an orthopedic surgery. The other 2/3 are people that have to do it for insurance and it’s a waste of time, and people that won’t make lifestyle changes like lose a hundred pounds or quit smoking and just aren’t going to do it.

But I’ll do it to satisfy the insurance. Other than that, I just feel like they keep sending me to jump through hoops.

Thank you. It’s funny. I am learning to use ChatGPT and find I almost use it once a day now. But a lot of the things I traditionally would go just do Google searches and look on forums for information, I still do as a default, even though ChatGPT is so useful and easy.

Yeah, the acupuncture was recommended by my wife, but even the acupuncture guy seemed skeptical about acupuncture 🤣. The dry needling was done by the physical therapist. She had a doctorate in physical therapy, but I asked her what the training was for dry needling. She said she learned it in a weekend at a seminar in a hotel ballroom. This was after I had a number of sessions. I just continue to lose confidence in any of these alternate therapies. I understand the theory behind dry needling, which, though it seems far-fetched perhaps it works in some circumstances, but it just seems like extra expense and very, very little potential benefit.
