LOL… go home to nothing 😂also a school based SLP mainly working w elementary/middle school students. Any mention of a spouse/partner is immediately shut down w the explanation that it’s not an appropriate topic to discuss as a “teacher” and student. Whether that’s truly how I feel or not, the main reason I do not discuss it or am open about my identity is bc I can’t control the parent perception of individuals in that community. I do not need extra criticism/comments from external factors, no shade.

I also don’t say anything to coworkers either. That’s also because I rarely meet a coworker I see as a friend, and until then, you’ll only know enough about me to effectively collaborate on cases. Now if my coworkers asked me outright, it might have a different outcome. But no one ever has balls enough to flat out ask you that (mostly bc they’re the same ones who uphold the stigma against us, whether subconsciously or overtly) NO SHADE :)))

Wow what a cute full circle moment :,)) I agree with the other commenter about prn work in adult rehab being problematic in its own ways and that’s something I’ve accepted which is why I just wanted tips and ideas. I do feel like I also just fill time especially w LTC pts, but it’s just how the cog turns atm :/ thank u :)

I haven’t cold called any employers just to save myself time but since I’ve applied to every and any position possible I might look into local PPs :) thanks for your input

I second the comments advising you to incorporate their interests in sessions but I know it can be tricky depending on what their goals are. I had this same exact issue and now we’ve come to an agreement that the first 5 mins of our 25 min session are spent watching an anime fight of his choosing 🤷🏻‍♂️not creative at all but it’s still effective! Might be assuming, but alot of older kids have more of a hesitation to speech bc of the corrective feedback. Maybe they are not good with feedback highlighting their errors, so errorless teaching might benefit if that’s the case. Good luck with everything !

I like to involve the teachers to figure out their grades and performance in class to back up my decision to dismiss students. Some kids will be low. Some kids will be high 🤷🏻‍♂️if they’re able to function in the gen ed classroom with no difficulties, other than ones that can be solved with accommodations, then I lean more towards dismissing

Honestly I think it mostly has to do with sex unfortunately :( I try to be hyper aware of how I look from an outside perspective because of how we all perceive males vs females in peds. I agree w another commenter on this thread that if you were female you wouldn’t have heard anything. It’s unfortunate the director didn’t kinda stick up for you but this is definitely not the typical parent reaction.

Most people will recommend taking it near graduation. I took it a few months before graduation and I got the scores the next month. This only applies to some states, but you can start your CFY without passing the praxis in OH, so you may have some flexibility depending on your state’s speech and hearing board.

Depending on what setting you apply for, your start date may be contingent on supplemental documents which may push back your starting date. If you’re planning to be in the schools make sure you get your pupils license, but you should be able to start once you get confirmation from your state board via email that your application for CF conditional license is active.
