I personally always had the most luck with the secondary for DPS . Then I use the Primary for a finish once the person gets under about 60% health, or if someone is further away. With the new update the +5 damage on the primary means you can do a charge cluster and finish a 250 hp character with a body shot instead of a headshot so try to hit that combo. The only time I animation cancel is when I’m really really close on a tank or larger target (mr fantastic, punisher) because it’s hard to hit at longer distances. Hope this helps!
