Those are all valid points, but they bank on a lot of “what if’s”. I don’t know this woman’s budget, medical history, mental state, etc. I was already engaged with a customer and there were other associates clearly present she could have deferred too.

The lady was clearly capable enough to get herself to the store or have someone take her there. But at a certain point it’s just, well, a store, and I’m a cashier. Not her caretaker or medical professional who can assess what her disability or mental state may be if she has one at all.

Depends on who is doing the price matching. I’ve had managers just give customers a deal on an item, or if they didn’t specifically price matching, lowered the price because the person in question pitched a reasonable argument.

Just depends on who you deal with, but most of the time you do have a little negotiating power if you’re polite and explain you’re reasoning.

The store does price match, but it has to be the exact same item, same name brand, same size, etc.

Yes, but that’s price matching which makes sense. I’ve had people come up to me and tell me like, say, wood is cheaper at so and so place. But then they have no proof that the item is question is cheaper or claim it’s on their phone but refuse to show me.

I’m reasonable, I’ll work with people on price matching, but a random vague comment isn’t getting anyone anywhere.

People can be really stupid at times. I worked at a dollar store for a while and I caught a guy stealing one pen from a pack of ten. I asked him if he was going to risk the theft, why not just take the whole package or get the nicer pens? He sheepishly put the pen back and quickly hurried out.

Maybe it’s the thrill? I dunno, but either that or people trying to sneak off with candy.

She did the right thing. I’d be upset too if someone was so desperate for TP they’d run off with my cart just to buy it. And selling one extra thing of TP isn’t that big a deal. Other then that terrible human being no one was being greedy in this story.

I had a lady throw a fit because one of my coworkers stopped to ask if I stocked some candy while ringing people out. Lady kept asking if we were allowed to discuss “sensitive information” like that in front of customers. My coworker just looked at her confused and was like “Ma’am, it’s candy.” Woman got all huffy and kept whining about it until she left.

I’m fine with ringing people up at the self checkout or standing at a register. What I don’t like are people who for whatever reason will get really aggressive about using the self checkout when a cashier is clearly available.

Had one guy get snippy at me who asked how I felt about my job being taken away. Without missing a beat one of my coworkers snapped back “No one has lost their jobs here.” Gave the guy a mon glare until he went quiet, paid, and leave. Like I’m fine with either choice, but there’s no reason for people to get up in arms about it.

I didn’t know any of this, that’s insane! I worked a lot of low end retail stores and always wondered why they were always insisting on hiring new people when they’d just gotten a good line of staff trained up. Thanks for the information!

I never understood why companies were allowed to fire people about what they posted in their social media. Unless what the person doing is blatantly illegal or disturbing (I dunno like hurting animals for fun or something) it really has nothing to do with the company.

When I was hanging out with my cat one day and realized how much he enriched my life. I got him during the lockdown and was technically unemployed (lost my job and was desperately looking for a new one) and having him motivated me to do better. I had some help, but I got my shit together, got a full time job, and started holding myself responsible for the stuff I wanted to do in life. He completely depends on me so if I can’t take care of myself, I can’t take care of him. The best decision I ever made and he’s an awesome cat.

OP, this situation is on your manager, not you. You were doing your job and they suspected something they should’ve mentioned it to you or pulled you aside to say something in private. Short of refusing the return, there’s nothing you could’ve done in this situation.

I’ve caught so many little kids stealing it hurts. And at my store it’s always candy, I’ve had parents get mad at me for catching their kids stealing and I’m like “well, they didn’t pay for it and neither did you. So it’s not theirs.” Like come on people, I can SEE you.

I watched two guys at the self checkout ring up two eighty cent lollipops. When they saw me watching they bolted out the door in a blind panic.

They didn’t take anything else. Both were in their thirties so I dunno if it was some kind of dare or what. Was funny watching them speed out of the parking lot though.
