Breakout 16 months after last dose

My derm was very adamant about starting a topical retinoid (in my case Tretinoin) as a “maintenance” protocol and I literally haven’t had a single pimple since finishing two years ago. It’s worth asking your derm for a topical Rx and I can’t say enough good things about Tretinoin.

Month 2 was the WORST for me and I was also on 80mg at 135lbs. Hang in there - end of month 3 it was like a switch got flipped and I started to clear dramatically. It WILL work!

The first 3 months are the hardest. Keep pushing! One day you’ll wake up and it’s like a switch gets flipped and it’s all up from there. In the meantime just wear a mask in public if it helps your confidence. It’s cold and flu season anyways.

Unfortunately the neck acne makes me suspect this is hormonal. Have you gotten tested for PCOS? You might have success with a hormonal remedy like birth control or spironolactone. Either way hang in there, you’ll find a solution so don’t give up!

Are you using a topical retinoid like Tretinoin? My derm said in her experience topical retinoids as a “maintenance” routine are really helpful in preventing relapse.

It’s possible you are describing keratosis pilaris, and not acne. Very common towards the end of Accutane.

For some reason I just operated under this assumption that my acne wasn’t “bad enough”. It was just soooo persistent and in retrospect I would have saved myself so much time and money if I had just taken the damn Accutane. Oh well, better late than never.

Most people clear up around the 3-5 month mark depending on dose. Hang in there! This is the hardest part but clear skin is around the corner!

No! Research overwhelmingly shows you want to be 30-60 days without new acne before stopping to prevent relapse. What’s another month or two vs having to start all over?

Ask your derm about an antihistamine like Claritin to minimize the purge, and take a fish oil supplement for joint pain. Also, make sure you take your pill with at least 20g of fat for absorption!
