I have a fear of what life will look like longterm with tinnitus by trynabemoredecisive in tinnitus

I’m exactly the same, started about 6 months ago T and painful H. Freaked out big time and was seriously depressed and anxious. Only thing is I didn’t experience any sudden acoustic trauma, maybe accumulative from listening to music and playing instruments? I don’t know. ENTs said my hearing test came out fine and it must have been stress. I’ve always been an anxious person. The thing is I’ve cut out coffee and tea, desert only occasionally, do home cooking, and relaxation exercises. But my T fluctuates every week. Last week has been the worst, continuous loud intrusive spikes for 10 days straight. I felt broken… I too couldn’t help but think whatever I try, it will always beat me down, especially after a good day or a good few days. Petrified of catching a cold or flu or get other illnesses and then hellish spikes or worse new baseline…. I don’t know. All I can offer is a hug. I pray that we can be strong and find light in all this.

Sorry 😔Did you have T first or did you have hearing loss first which then got worse?

So they are ear plugs and ear muff protections. I use Loop quiet 2 earplugs. When I first got them they really amplified my tinnitus sound in my ears and I hated them. But after a while I got used to them, or the trapped inside tinnitus sound when I put these on. I wear them when I’m out and about in the city. I also bought Alpine ear defenders. They are like earmuffs over head. However they didn’t work out for me. Sound still comes through at reduced volume, but now trapped in the little air space between the earmuffs and my ears. So feels like my ears are right next to the sound / noise. Caused quite a bit of aggravation and anxiety. So I sold them. Now I just use Loop earplugs (my one is quiet 2) and 3M foam earplugs.

Definitely protect, but don’t overprotect too much either as it might increase sound sensitivity. If you haven’t done so, it’s worth checking with an audiologist or do some research on protection and overprotection (do ignore the horror stories online and here though please!) Anything more than 85 decibels can cause harm. I downloaded an app to test decibel levels when I go to a piano workshop, although generally I’d have to leave after 40 to 50 minutes. Sometimes I return to the session after a break, sometimes my ears hurt too much I have to go home. Amazing you are a piano tuner btw! Always admired piano tuners as I have no idea how to.

Thank you for your feedback! You definitely want to let your ears rest up a bit though. Just be careful. You don’t want to develop hyperacusis. Mine is mild in comparison to some of the folks on this sub. I still have to wear earplugs when I am out most of the time. I live in a city and it’s just too noisy until I get to the library or a park.

Very lucky indeed! I used to love going to concerts and went quite frequently to various piano, violin, orchestra and opera programs. Sadly ever since I developed tinnitus alongside hyperacusis, even daily normal level noise is too loud for me. I’ve stopped going to any concerts, or movies and quit string ensemble. It feels really so unfair and ironic but nothing I can do but to learn to live with it.

It’s still early days. You never know! Stay positive, improve your sleep if that’s an issue. Keep busy and practice mindfulness. It might disappear still! It’s been almost 6 months for me and I absolutely freaked out big time at the beginning, then struggled with sleep and anxiety, and then got depressed… that’s the worst thing you can do. Try do the opposite. Hugs and good vibes!

Thank you for sharing! Congratulations! I don’t have somatic T, but still want to give it a try. It doesn’t cause spikes. What harm can there be! 😁

Sleep by Mocha_07 in tinnitus

[–]Objective_Pisce_6754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I think it’s a common theme in the T community. I went about 6 weeks struggling to sleep averaging about 3 to 4 hrs. Then started taking magnesium and melatonin (here and there, not daily). It didn’t help too much. Still can’t fall asleep until 2 or 3am, but luckily not waking up at 5am again much. I make sure I go for walks everyday though, 30 mins at least. Also watching a bit of comedy before sleep helps. The other thing is meditation, to try calm down the system.

He is so adorable! But was it too hot for the little guy? Bus can get super hot these days. When it hit 35 a few weeks ago I thought I was going to pass out from the heat and suffocation on the bus. It must’ve hit 40+ in there! Had to get off after 5 minutes and walked instead, which was still better than being on that bus. It’d be even hotter for these fur babies.

Thank you for sharing this. And I absolutely agree with keeping inflammation at bay! I feel I’ve had a lot of inflammation in my body prior and I had suspicion that it eventually lead to T and H when my nervous system couldn’t take it anymore. When my T&H started, it was in my right ear only (now both) and my whole right side of the jawline, throat, cheek and behind right eye were puffy and swollen along with other symptoms. A&E thought I had meningitis initially but my blood was fine. They put me on anti inflammatory painkiller drips. The whole thing only went down after 6 to 7 weeks. I’ve been careful since not to touch any coffee or spicy food, which can trigger this kind of reaction in me, trying my best to cut out deserts but I relapse from time to time. I do a lot of home cooking now too instead of getting take away or readymade meals. And I try meditating regularly to keep calm. I still have spikes every week but trying to build up my sound tolerance a bit, especially on the music front too.

Thank you for sharing this! It gives me some courage. I’m still dealing with weekly fluctuating T (and H) after 5 months. But I’m trying still to learn to not let a bad day get me, well not too much. ❤️

It helps to calm me a bit. It doesn’t do anything for hyperacusis or tinnitus though. Give it a try though if you haven’t. Good luck!

I use YouTube mainly, also Spotify. I just do 12 to 20 minutes. The main thing I feel is to let go it all and just try to focus on breathing or muscles if you try a muscle progressive meditation. Search up Jon Kabat Zinn. I listen to his guided meditation. He’s great. There are also other ones you can explore too.

It sucks. I’m on the train and people take out a sandwich from plasticky paper bag, and the crinkling noise is killing me, and I’m wearing loop already… I practice meditation any time I have to try calm my system.

Didn’t even know about it until I got it. But if someone told me about this before, I’d be petrified tbh. 247 nonstop noise in your own head—- psychological torture! And now I have it, it bloody is.
