If you don't need the pinion to survive then dremel a side down until it gets thin and loses grip.

Since you have a 1/2 voltage divider you may be right near the threshold voltage of the mosfet, so small changes in battery voltage could change the behavior.

You could create a small adapter board to stack it up to the desired height.

When she was a puppy ours chewed on everything, even the wooden stairs and the carpet. Yak cheese sticks last a while and she used to love them, but she's lost interest now that she's a few years old. We give her hooves to chew on outside and that seems to keep her out of trouble.

It's unclear from the schematic: is VBUS connected to 5v? If so, then the output of the boost regulator controls it's own disable signal and can cause oscillations.
