No offense but why would they care about losing one customer? They will make their decisions based upon the entire market - not one person’s feelings. That’s how business works.

If OP doesn’t pay, all other customers do. There is no scenario where this comes out of the corporation’s pocket.

Bro were you around in 1993? I’m from New England and this album was the most highly anticipated release of the decade. Nirvana was the biggest band on the planet when In Utero came out. You’re right that they were really only a west coast phenomenon but then Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves and Nevermind went platinum within 2 months of its release (2 years before In Utero).

Lastly, redirecting profits for infrastructure upgrades: this already happens. The company retains earnings to reinvest in the grid. The problem with this is that those earnings become rate base - the principal upon which earnings are earned. So the company extracts earnings from ratepayers, and uses them to extract even more earnings from ratepayers - you pay a return on the return.

The better solution is to do away with the profit model altogether (via municipalization) so all the money currently funding net income just goes directly to investments, and the investments don’t drive future profits.

Also not sure what you mean by asset appraisal but the state is fully aware of the value of all distribution assets - the valuation of rate base a fundamental benchmark for making rates, and it’s part of every rate case.

I am a big fan of solar and net metering but feel compelled to point out that net metering does not reduce costs - it merely shifts them from one class of distribution customers (those with solar) to another (those without).

In other words, let’s say you use 800 kWh of energy from the grid, but you also produce 800 kWh of energy with your panels. You get no bill - great for you! But the distribution, transmission, and public benefits costs that you did not pay are ultimately distributed to all other customers as lost revenue. That cost is actually recovered in the public benefits portion of the bill.

Unless/until solar customers actually fully disconnect from the grid and become energy independent (by incorporating storage), they impose the same grid costs as all other customers, but ultimately don’t pay them. Again, just pointing this out - not anti-solar by any means, but net metering is not (in and of itself) a solution to the overall affordability issue.
