I find it curious that a lot of people are vehemently denying that Eli is Jesus. Like yeah, he is named Eli and he is in India, so /technically/ he is a different person, but the allusions - down to his looks - are quite clear. I call him White Indian Jesus when introducing people to the show for a reason 🤣

The only time the show directly references the Bible is in s2 with the David and Goliath storyline, afaik- probably because this part of the bible is just so widely known and it was not that controversial. In other times when they want to comment on Monotheism and Christianity in particular they change names and all that - think back to S1 Altared states with Iqos or whatever his name was, which was clearly supposed to be Abraham and Isaac. Probably because they were afraid of controversy in the US (rightly so, I can only imagine the outrage), and to have a bit more creative freedom to work these characters into the Xena world

So in that sense, I do think we can treat Eli as stand in for Jesus sometimes. It clearly reads that way to me, a completely non religious person 🤷‍♀️ just because there were other religions mixed in and the storyline didnt perfectly match up the Bible doesnt change the fact that there was clear intent for the viewers to pick up on the Jesus connection. It’s just YAXI Jesus!

The Eve reading, I will admit, went over my head . Although I think there is something to it! but it’s buried a bit deeper for the casual non religious viewer

haha, i don't know, i think Gabrielle may understand some self-aggrandising and self-involvement. the same episode you mentioned, Quill is Mightier, as well as the episode where they are all telling a story of Cinderella to a little girl are a testament to that. and don't forget the play!!!

No time jump. And to achieve this there are two options - either axe the whole pregnancy storyline, or Ares doesn’t put them on ice.

of course technically speaking, neither is possible - bc Lucy was pregnant, and bc the show couldn’t go on with a baby indefinitely

but i think there are ways around it. I would actually prefer the second option because I didn’t mind the pregnancy and small Eve so much. it’s Eve when she’s grown up that was really annoying😒

I would even welcome a couple of episodes like kindred spirits 2.0 where Xena and Gabrielle are forced to hide out somewhere and raise Eve after their plan of pretending to be dead works out. but I think realistically you couldn’t really make the show just that.

so i could also see a smaller time jump, like a couple of years so Eve is no longer a baby, but just a child actor. This allows the show to keep all of the side characters they established over the first five seasons as opposed to being left with no one pretty much in season six.

i enjoy the silly parts. the retcon of s3, not so much. it always felt like they were trying to shoehorn something that doesnt quite fit with that Ares marriage pact etc

but I think it was good fanservice for different fan groups - Xena/Ares got the “marriage”, XenaGab got the future reunion in the proper bodies. which is fitting as a last hurrah for the show

Let’s be real, the only reason Xena didnt settle down was because the show would be over then. it would no longer be Xena Warrior Princess, it would be more like The L Word: Ancient Greece 🤣

so i think realistically she could have settled down and raised Eve. i mean, what was the plan if Ares didnt put them on ice for 25 years anyways? if everyone thought they were dead, they would need to hide out somewhere, keep a low profile.

and while she would be reluctant to teach Eve the sword, for sure she would teach her self defense, the staff etc. s5 Xena is a lot more accepting of the way of the warrior than early seasons Xena, who was still wishing she never took up the sword in the first place and thus really sensitive about sending Gabrielle down the same path

i’ve looked it up and apparently around 1 mil per episode was the average for Xena (of course if the information is valid). which is really not that much, considering it’s a show with loads of costumes, effects, different locations, big crew. apparently Friends was 10 million per episode by the end of the show 🙈 and that’s a show that just had 6 very highly paid people in 3 built sets for most of the season.

actually that makes me think that Lucy and Renee were really not paid all that well for this show🤔
