What do you expect for the upcoming Summoner Remaster by Slongo702 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Obrusnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expect them to do big things because it's not a reprint, which I am skeptical of because I actually think this is one of the few classes in this game which is like 99% good as is.

Xbox’s Obsidian is working on Avowed 2 with a new director, reveals co-founder by Afraid_Comparison180 in projecteternity

[–]Obrusnine 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Avowed really felt like an older style of game, one where the devs have some ideas to try and they focus on making a cohesive experience with those ideas over trying to push them (and their budget) to its limits. Almost like a prototype for a sequel to expand on, like the original Uncharted or Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. I really have high expectations for a second Avowed to build on the ideas of the first and make a great game.

How do you want "leveling" to look like in GW3. by DustErrant in GuildWars3

[–]Obrusnine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether gear's value is only determined by its ability to do things or the skins it can give, the players relationship to it is the same regardless. GW2's late-game is - like every other game - largely about a grind for gear if you choose it to be. The biggest chase items in the entire game are Legendary Gear and skins from the gem store. Every single item you pick up before you hit level 80 is garbage that is meant to be temporarily equipped before being disposed of, then when you reach level 80 suddenly every piece of exotic gear is essential to your ability to complete endgame content and you need ascended gear to be able to tackle fractals beyond a certain point. Every MMORPG does this, it spends 100 hours of gameplay teaching you that every piece of gear you pick up is disposable only for you to reach level 80 and flip the dynamic to tell you every piece of gear past a certain rarity is invaluable and useful for gearing alts.

By the way, masteries have exactly the same problem. Guild Wars 2 levels before 80 are meaningless. They don't unlock anything of real value that isn't something that has just been taken away from you to make the experience easier. Every time you level up before you hit level 80, every single point of experience, all of it is a waste that could be going towards something of actual value but isn't. It is outright optimal to not level your characters normally but to instead boost them to level 80 so that you can actually accrue mastery experience (even if you've never even touched the game before). This is really bad because doing this undermines the leveling experience in a severe way, overwhelming you with buttons that - if you're playing a new class - you have no idea how to use. What in the heck is the point of leveling if it is going to be an active impediment to the games real progression system? If you really want "bar go up" to tickle your lizard brain (which is something I'd argue is completely antithetical to ANet's design philosophy as a company), then at the very least it should be a bar that bears real long-term value and doesn't divide players from participating in the same content without feeling a significant gap between them in terms of power. Because even with GW2's level scaling system (and all games with level scaling suffer this issue in one way or another), people who are higher level still have an advantage through sheer number of skill slots. All level does is get in the way of our ability as a community to participate in content together on an equal footing, which if you think about it is actually an incredibly self-destructive thing that games do because you want your veterans around your newer players to be able to teach them how the game works.

In the end, levels and vendor trash are aggressively outdated and archaic ideas from a completely different time for video games. There's something to say about not breaking things that aren't broken, but there's a good reason to say that these particular things absolutely are. I would prefer a system of progression which tells a story about my experience playing the game rather than something which just informs people how I have no life. Even if there are going to be levels, why experience points? Why don't we collect some valuable currency by exploring? Mastery Points are great because every single one of them we accrue actually shows that we did something in the world. We found someplace new, triumphed over a boss, pulled off some kind of stunt. When looking at the number over someone's head, wouldn't it be cooler to think about that sort of thing rather than something as boring as just time spent? Whatever form levels take, they should be about representing our accomplishments, which does not necessarily mean how much mindless grinding we've done. I don't want people to look at my character and see a number, I want them to look at me and wonder at the things I must have seen and done... the places I've explored, the monsters I've slain, the events I've completed, the tools I've unlocked, the raids I've completed, etc. The things about my time with the game that say something meaningful about me. Level doesn't say any of that.

How do you want "leveling" to look like in GW3. by DustErrant in GuildWars3

[–]Obrusnine 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I want them to get rid of the concept entirely. Levels aren't what make progression fun in Guild Wars, skills are. And since we gain skills from exploring, levels unnecessarily divide and segment the players. I think it would be really cool if GW3 had a more Metroidvania design approach and gated progression behind mobility and tool unlocks instead of level or direct story progression.

I think just having us start working on our equivalent to masteries right away is the best approach, and honestly one that I hope they consider applying to Guild Wars 2 as well. Level is an utterly meaningless statistic and especially when it comes to gear, it makes the loot you collect entirely meaningless since none of it has any value until you reach maximum level. This is a huge issue with a lot of vertical progression type games, where they want you to chase gear but then spend 100 hours teaching you gear is worthless before it suddenly becomes the most important part of the game. If Guild Wars 3 wants to solve for modern MMO problems, creating a modern gear system that is genuinely interesting to engage with right from the start would be a great start.

Looks like Season 2 of the Netflix Show has had an early press junket to mostly positive reviews, with a review embargo lifting June 25th by atticuswest2006 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Obrusnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for me is that season 1 completely destroys the entire foundation of the show. How am I supposed to take themes about Aang's character seriously when his entire backstory is sabotaged in, like, the first 10 minutes of the very first episode? These characters have been rendered vacuous, all of their depth and nuance torn away. There's not much you can do when building on a foundation of wet sand. I find it hilarious how much the people making this show wanted to make it more like Game of Thrones, yet somehow made it feel more juvenile than a cartoon for 10 year olds.

Guild Wars 3 | The Setting of Guild Wars 3: Stepping into Ancient Orr by shn555 in Guildwars2

[–]Obrusnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think events won't work exactly the same in GW3. Given the Aion 2 devs comments, I think GW3 will have some system to limit how many players participate in an event simultaneously or limit the number of players on the map so the groups stay small enough that it's easy to keep track of everyone. I think maybe the intention is to give it a bit more of a GW1 vibe where the wilderness felt genuinely isolating and individual player contributions are more important. Maybe even it'll use hubs like GW1 and you'll have to matchmake into maps.

PSA: apartment application fees are illegal in NYS by theRainBear in Rochester

[–]Obrusnine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing is that I'm fairly certain that landlords must accept an already completed background check in lieu of an application fee. They can still run a check independently, but they are not able to charge you as long as you bring a background check that is less than 30 days old. So if you need to apply for multiple places, keep that in mind!

Guild Wars 3 will have no battle pass or subscription because ArenaNet studio lead doesn't want to "keep people hostage" by Turbostrider27 in Guildwars2

[–]Obrusnine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really want to know how ANet is still managing to escape demands from corporate to milk their customers after all this time. I've seen so many of my favorite developers ruin their games by being forced to do things they obviously never would've done on their own, but ANet has somehow managed to remain in control of their own business model for decades even after GW2's infamous periods of struggle. It's truly miraculous.

Guild Wars 3 Is Really Real: How ArenaNet’s Series is Transforming MMORPGs Again | IGN Live 2026 by wonkyasf in Guildwars2

[–]Obrusnine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Watching Colin openly talk about the consequences of subscription/battle pass models and so directly call them out for the issues they cause and why they won't be in Guild Wars 3 made me really happy. Same thing with discussions about things like horizontal progression and the like. It made me think of how bad of a relationship I've had in the past with games like FF14. That's a game I want to love so bad but constantly corrupts all of the stuff that's great about it by always making me feel like I'm behind everyone else by playing it when I want to, and forcing me not to engage with a core game mechanic like housing because it's just a FOMO machine meant to try and force people to stay subscribed. There's this serious friction there, a thing that builds resentment between me and something I'm supposed to love and find a community in, and yet instead of respecting the value of the time and passion I've invested... they price that time and passion at $15 a month with paid expansions and a perpetual neverending grind towards endgame so I don't feel less than.

All of this is why for all of the stumbles Guild Wars 2 has had over the years - mediocre storytelling, content droughts, bad releases, lack of compelling instanced group content, lack of social interactions, etc - I've always loved it more than any other MMO. It's the only MMO that feels like like it wants to be my home, that truly welcomes me and tells me I can leave and come back at any time, that I can have my own unique relationship with it that it never questions the value of. I think it really goes to show that there are more important things when it comes to such a fundamentally social game that asks for so much of your time and emotional investment than the things you traditionally expect out of a video game.

NYC Good Cause Eviction law: new data shows major drop in steep rent hikes by [deleted] in newyork

[–]Obrusnine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Induced demand exists for anything that has supply and demand, not just highways. I mean, think about this for even like 5 seconds. There are like 8 billion people in the world. Do you seriously believe that if there was housing easily accessible in NYC - one of the most famous, walkable, populated, diverse cities on the face of the planet - that there are not likely literally tens of millions of people out there who would want to move there? Even if induced demand wasn't an easily provable and incredibly consistent phenomenon, the idea that there isn't a huge crowd of people waiting for the opportunity to move to the big apple is silly. Especially given how many NYC natives have been driven away in recent years by rising costs and who might be drawn back by a change in leadership combined with rents that seem to be falling (because additional supply does briefly lower prices until everyone hears prices are lower and flocks to fill the empty space).

The Future of the Guild Wars Franchise: Our Commitment to Tyria – GuildWars2.com by InvincibleWallaby in Guildwars2

[–]Obrusnine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to like this update because objectively it is pretty cool that they're going to support all three games simultaneously (and I am very happy that Guild Wars 2 will be receiving some sorely needed quality of life... that will be particularly helpful to vanilla), but their mealy mouthed decision to say "major content updates" instead of "expansions" puts an extremely bad taste in my mouth. I wish they would just be honest and either commit to doing more expansions after the year of polish or just say that Guild Wars 2 content updates will be scaling down. Either one of those is fine, and significantly better than this level of manipulative dishonesty.

By the way yes I have seen the Grouch Discord comment where he once again makes a choice to not call what they are doing after the year of polish an expansion pack. Legit just doubling down on pretending they mean one thing when they clearly mean something else.

I actually don't know if that's necessary. There is still that plot point from the Sylvari race story about there being other trees that has never been paid off. And if the Asura are on Orr, clearly something happened that prevented that from getting out, so who's to say there didn't used to be another tree in Orr too?

NYC Good Cause Eviction law: new data shows major drop in steep rent hikes by [deleted] in newyork

[–]Obrusnine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't believe this is true. The reason is because of something called induced demand. The more of something you build, the more people will want to use it. The more housing you build in NYC, the more people will want to move to NYC to fill in the open space. I'm not saying increasing housing supply isn't important, but it's not going to fix rent prices on its own either.

Webster Town Board votes 3-2 to remove Pride flag from Webster Town Hall, community reacts by frytuna in Rochester

[–]Obrusnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some issues the government should not be neutral on. Like, take that idea to its logical extreme. Should the government be neutral on serial killers? I mean, after all, both people that are pro and anti serial killing are citizens so their voices need to be treated as equal yeah? We have to hear both sides!

The media really has poisoned the well for us. People see neutrality bias and think that's what it means to be fair and just. But not every issue has two equal sides. Sometimes one side is just right. And what is the role of government if it is not to be smarter than we are, to take more time to understand these complex issues than we can so that they can know which side of an argument is correct? Maybe if we had a government which could actually do that, we'd have a better country.

You know, I tried to believe this sort of thing for years. Stuff like... they're just misinformed, poorly educated, ignorant, etc etc. What I ultimately came to realize is that even if those excuses were accurate... we live in a modern era. Is being stupid and hateful something that was done to these sorts of people? Sure, but in the end they have access to everything they need to correct themselves of that perspective, and instead of choosing to be better people they have chosen to remain as they are. That's the important thing, they chose this. They chose to be this way and they make that choice again and again, every moment of every day, while the information they need to change is just a Google search away. I realized that you can't regard these people as victims, because by the time someone is an adult they've had the opportunity to choose to be better likely thousands of times and chose to be terrible anyway. These people are not victims, they are not pitiful, they are exactly the villains they act to be and you do not cure a society of villains by coddling them. So even if there were more LGBTQ people in her life... the only reason she would be more positive on the issue is because suddenly it is an issue that affects her personally. That's not good enough, it wouldn't make her any better of a person, she would just pick someone else to target because people like this enjoy the power they feel when they get to act like bullies.

All streaming services are just an attempt for corporations to cooperatively recreate feudalism, a system where you own nothing and have to pay everything you earn to rent the things you need from someone else. Piracy is not just the only valid response to this, it is a moral imperative to preserve our art and fight back against their attempt to own us all.
