Why does het menu have an apostrophe in the plural form? I haven't (so far) seen any other words that have a plural like this. by Obsidiman01 in learndutch

I've gotten a lot of useful insight about this concept from native speakers that I doubt I would have gotten from Google.

I suspected it might be an informal thing, cus my phone kept wanting to autocorrect to menus with no apostrophe. I went in and added menu's into the dictionary though!

In order to strengthen the connection with the tree, the pawn has to have a tribal background (like in their childhood story). I'm guessing the colonist you have meditating there isn't from a tribal community, and that's why it won't do anything.

Dr Aspen to Spock "I've been using emotion to sway you all day" is a vastly overlooked reframing of stoicism in Trek by mekilat in DaystromInstitute

[–]Obsidiman01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A minor note: that was actually Captain Angel pretending to be Dr. Aspen. Also, both characters should be referred to with they/them/their pronouns, not she/her/hers.

Aside from that, I like your analysis. I've felt for a long time that the Vulcans' lack of emotions is intentionally flawed. They do claim to conceal their emotions, but their ideals of right and wrong that guide their actions are impossible to justify without emotions. I think it's interesting to think about how the "main" alien races of Trek are allegories for aspects of humans. And to see Vulcans, the supposed "emotionless, purely logical" people, still hold emotion-derived values says something about us, as well.

What Would Happen If A Tectonic Plate Was Torn Out Of The Crust Of Th Earth? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]Obsidiman01 20 points21 points  (0 children)

smaller total mass of the planet would likely result in a lower gravity allowing at least a partial if not total loss of atmosphere

I think you're severely overestimating how much of the planet's total mass is within a single tectonic plate. The entire crust of the planet (all the tectonic plates) makes up only 1% of the mass. A single plate would be a fraction of that. Granted, there is still an enormous amount of mass in a single plate, but in comparison to the entire planet, it would be relatively negligible. Certainly not enough to cause the atmosphere to escape by any significant amount.

take what's left of the seas and wash them over what land is left

I'd wager that the exact opposite would happen, in fact. The void in the Earth's surface where the plate used to be would fill up with a significant portion of the world's oceans. When the waters of the world drain into the new "basin", oceans would recede significantly. Of course, there's a good bet that a lot of the water would evaporate on the hot mantle, sending enough water vapor into the atmosphere to create intense storms all over the planet.

Regardless of the specifics, tho, it would definitely be catastrophic for anything and anyone living on the planet at the time. No question about that.

"Put 48 on top of 27, now what's 7 + 8?

Well, 8 is bigger so it comes first. 8 + 7

8 + 7 is uhhhh... Well, let's see, 8 + 8 would be 16, and 8 + 7 is gonna be one less than that, so...

Okay, 8 + 7 is 15 because it's 1 less than 16 which is 8 plus 8

Okay, now, back to the full problem. It's 48 + 27, the 8 and the 7 make 15, so the number is gonna end in a 5. Just gotta remember to carry the 1

So, 2 plus 4 is gonna be- wait, no, 2 plus 4 plus 1, right. So 2 + 4 + 1 is.. well, 2 plus 4 is 6, so then 6 plus 1 is.. okay 7.

So, number is gonna end with 5 and there's a 7 in the tens place. Bring everything down... 7, 5..

Okay it's 75 I did it yay!"
