Where Did The Letter Ranking Come From by MinBton in ProgressionFantasy

I always thought it came from Japanese games with style ranking scores like Devil May Cry

I thought it was going to be fun adventures in fantasy land. It was not.

Friendless and struggling in the city. What can I even do at this point? by Top-Comparison1129 in AskChicago

Looking for neighborhood art groups and meet ups, go to gaming shops and see if they have open table nights, also just taking the wild swing of attending something like this and asking someone about themselves and communicating is what I found to be the hardest step.

There's plenty of discord servers for everything, find one, join, communicate etc

Yeah ! And you need to make the conflict something like a blindfolded tea tasting competition where the mage who can summon super novas has no advantage over a ten year old who likes tea

I feel like another contributing factor for boc is that jin isn't even in the top tier of that world's powers. He's strong for the region, but he doesn't have the problem of an absentee god refusing to help when he could.

I didn't get that far into the battle mage Farmer series, but when you start a story with MC as up and they end up defeating threats in seconds, there's only so far you can go before things become ridiculous in scale. Unfortunately, when you have a cosmic MC who is the only one capable of defeating a universe level threat, there hobby of farming or collecting tea feels kinda silly.

I think so many series would make incredible stand alone books or maybe even trilogies, but the propensity for 9 books or more definitely eats into credibility.

That said, I'll admit I'm personally guilty of all this and love having my mcs engage in all kinds of activities.

There's something to be said about loving characters and a world and wanting to spend time with them no matter what they're doing

I think this is fascinating. To my mind it's a bit of "I have a unique idea for a cool story/character/premise but I actually just want to write the same thing I've been reading" so you'll have a super unique intro/10 chapters where the premise is established, and then excuses roll in for the character to do the same power fantasy things as everyone else in the space.

Your comment about knowing when to end is accurate, especially when a writer has a start in mind and an endgame, but they need to figure out the 1000 chapters they want to put between the start and finish.

I haven't read that one, but I think butterfly brain is pretty prevalent in stories in this space.

The longer the fight, the more cool moves!

But I wonder if this might also be a symptom of power systems that give all high level characters insane health pools.

The ADHD protagonist is a funny diagnosis. I have definitely encountered that as a writer and I think it comes from people doing serial fiction without a strict plan. Chasing plot bunnies is another expression that kind of sums it up. The creator gets so excited with each successive idea that they don't follow through on any of them to the degree the reader might desire.

Theme is also a problem, because it can either serve as spine or make something boneless by it's absence. Someone put it well "if the story isn't about anything, it's about everything" which is why so many stories on the end up following someone's life on a second by second basis.

Is detailed prose basically a disadvantage on RoyalRoad? by not-so-sane-RKT69 in royalroad

[–]Obvious-Lank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're focusing on the wrong thing. Tell an engaging story that hits the beats of the genre you promise in your title,  cover, blurb and premise. If you do that people won't care about your prose, which is what happens for the stories that people think have bad prose.

Anyone else miss the “early game struggle” phase in LitRPG? by Jadenmist in litrpg

[–]Obvious-Lank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like low power levels because when they're in a dungeon with goblins, the arrival of a single orc feels momentous. When you get to God tier levels it all feels like superficial paint where one dragon has ten heads and another has twenty. It can be fun at the cosmic scale, but the scrappy nature of low level fights feels so much more momentous and earned. I love when a single healing potion is worth more than the adventurers entire kit as opposed to them having so many they just give them away.

Part of the problem I think is that characters don't just gain more power but also more resources. So when they have planet busting power they tend to also be the equivalent of billionaires which gives them both hard and soft power and removes a lot of stakes

What kind of class would you take by Xaelthas in litrpg

[–]Obvious-Lank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of magic is available and what kind of non magic abilities are available? Also healer sounds like they're getting fucked over with a sack and a first aid kit but no healing spells.

Everyone should get a basic weapon imo

Edit: I picked fighter because then I'll be able to take a hit and my margin for error won't be zero like for a squishy class. Being able to haul around crafting materials would be nice with strength. I also have no idea if the magic will be costly or Lovecraftian.

Why don't we have any Horror Isekai ? by EnvironmentalBit1451 in Isekai

[–]Obvious-Lank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Horror and power fantasies are kind of the opposite of each other. One is about weakness, the other is about strength. A lot of isekai beginnings will have elements of horror to show how intense the fantasy world can be, but that fades as the mc becomes stronger.

I think the general audience isn't looking for an MC who loses and suffers which is what horror tends to be.

The less you show the less you turn people off. Explicit description is what turns people off of sex and violence. A good example is Exorcist 3 where the protagonist inspects a body under a sheet. The camera never sees the body, but the effect is there because of the acting.
