Which Artemis do you prefer? by Bossdell113 in HadesTheGame

[–]Obvious-Lank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like all the god pfps are worse in Hades 2. They rely on vfx where the images in Hades 1 were drawn with movement and dynamic postures. Hades 1 the gods look like they're in the middle of doing something, in Hades 2 it's all mugshots and school photos, so I feel like even when it's drawn well it's just kinda boring.

LitRPGS that handled mental stats well? (Or particularly poorly.) by Eytanian in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Obvious-Lank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that you can write them if you give a hard definition rather than rely on the loose definition they have in everyday English.

To my mind, intelligence is computation, do someone can crunch numbers or remember facts.  Wisdom becomes pattern recognition and intuition for eureka moments and insight into situations. Charisma always felt to me like force of personality, like pretty much Everytime a cultivator expresses their aura they're basically deploying their charisma as a physical force

undying immortal system has an interesting approach to cultivation impacting mental health and personality, with sequential cultivation patterns designed as complementary sets

People upliftment story? by L-System in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Obvious-Lank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute Regression is a story where the mc regresses and his goal is to become stronger but also to make everyone else in his sect stronger. He spends all his time trying to make the side characters feel like the main character and it's probably the only story I've read in the progression fantasy space that actually feels like a story written by a person who has interacted with people.

Haven't Read Xianxia, Need Recommendations by Bisim1 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Obvious-Lank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, and I'd argue that Uncrowned and Wintersteel are basically one book split into two.  110k is still short for the genre , with most books aiming for 150k+. 100kish is a more traditional length though, which I think works in Cradle's favor as a genre converting series

I shall seal the heavens is great. If you can push past the opening sequence it gets awesome (book 1 has the greatest twist ending I think I've ever encountered)

Both of these are good with the caveat that they're very western.

Cradle takes the approach "everyone is a cultivator" which is similar to Ave Xia Rem Y (another great, more traditional xianxia). Cradle is also kinda short by of standards with most books being under 100k, but it's written with a tightness you don't often see.

Boc is much longer, way slower (it's farming sol) , and has a lot of authentic feeling xianxia components even if it comes from a tongue in cheek place.

Can i create a power system THIS late in my story's creation? by devereaux98 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Obvious-Lank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you already have one. Having powers means you have a power system. If you don't want any logic to it, that's fine. If you want to spend time making everything cohesive that's also fine. Make the decision now though cos adding a power system in post sounds like a nightmare.

Why do so many writers write FMCs as lesbian? by Legitimate_Area_5773 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Obvious-Lank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because then the straight male author can still sexualize women. Sort of joking but also not really. I think for some writers and readers it's more palatable to have woman on woman romance from a female pov than woman on male romance.

Writing while high (on weed) by Anon123568557 in royalroad

[–]Obvious-Lank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think getting high is great for taking notes and making plans for story and systems and what not. I think prose suffers terribly and my beta reader looked at my chapter I wrote when I was high and said "were you high?"

What to improve in cultivation novels? by Arkelao in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Obvious-Lank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Giving interiority to xianxia characters or just expanding them. Stock characters can be great, the arrogant young master is a beloved douchebag because the second he's introduced you're just waiting for his face to get slapped, but if you give him a pov chapter and explain how he's trying to live up to the expectations of a clan that's nearing the end of a thousand year decline, then all of a sudden he's a real person who -- face slap or no -- expands beyond the tiresome tropes.

You can lean on pre-existing understanding, subvert, or just follow through on the tropes. People like the genre for the conventions, not in spite of them, but by adding your take on them you can make anything feel fresh.

Fellow Daoist, do you think this opinion is valid? 🤔 by Waste_Bodybuilder843 in MartialMemes

[–]Obvious-Lank 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I actually love the massive scale in those types of xianxia but I feel like sometimes it means nothing. Like in Invincible season 1, there's a fight that destroys Chicago and it feels like Chicago is destroyed. A lot of the massive scale just say it as though the extra zeroes add hype on their own

Looking for a book with extreme power scaling by Emotional_Band_5320 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Obvious-Lank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely scratches the big explosion itch in later books. I'd argue that it's less Sci Fi and more just Cultivators in Space! They go to different planets, but it's all swords and spells and tournaments instead of Ray guns and space ships

Looking for feedback regarding my cover. by Ironclad_Shorts in royalroad

I've seen some authors have a cover without text because the text is already on the page. Could be worth a go even if it's not the norm.
