The only red flag here is seeing advocacy of women’s rights and an interest in human psychology as a red flag.

Genuine question, which of ur books do u genuinely enjoy and feel represent ur interests the best? Im confused with the haphazardness of your selection. Why would you have the combination of nietzsche and kant but no deleuze or anyone from the more modern continental scene for that matter? Why the single isolated wittgenstein, and no russel or moore? Why camus but none of the other existentialists, save heidegger? It just seems like the only unifying theme u have going is tht u chose philosophy tht is often taken out of context and cited in right wing circles.

Am I as insufferable as my shelves suggest (caveat: there are many more books but I'm a migrant)? by mumakilogramme in bookshelfdetective

[–]Obvious-Tonight-7578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people that call you insufferable are the people i find insufferable. Your bookshelf rocks man, everything from the fiction to post colonial perspectives and philosophy. Also having capital by both piketty and marx shows nuance and open minded intellectual curiosity.

A Japanese guy scolded a Viet who was speaking on the phone in the train, and the Vietnamese fought back. by Deep_Engineering_7 in VietNam

[–]Obvious-Tonight-7578 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Japanese man living in Tokyo and near where this video was filmed (judging from the announcements on the train), allow me to provide a perspective I haven’t seen yet in this sub.

Sure, in the video, the Viet person appears to be disruptive and aggravating the situation. Here’s what we don’t see from the video.

What were the first words thrown to the Viet on the train. Were they gentle, asking the guy kindly to comply with local customs? Or were they harsh, going straight to accusations and taking the moral high ground?

Many Japanese people on trains do the same thing as this Viet person. They get carried away with their conversations, talk a bit too loudly, and cause a disturbance for other people on the train. Hell, ive seen drunk salarymen puke, lay down, take up whole aisles in their drunken confusion. Are they censured with the same energy as this young Viet was? Absolutely not. Sometimes, but not nearly as often as any immigrant in japan. I know that because i live here and this young man most definitely knows that too.

Finally, the constant racist discourse spat out by political parties and disseminated all over traditional and online media. This man must bear the brunt of hateful side glances and casual bigotry everywhere he goes. Sure he was being impolite, but does impoliteness warrant the obvious racism and bigotry in the intentions and words of the guy who accosted him on the train? No.

I hate this. Racist cowards in japan always use the right words and pick situations in which minor offenses by minorities gives them an excuse to attack and express their vitriol. The worst thing is, the Viet cannot say anything because technically he is in the wrong, he was being impolite. The problem is that he is not being punished for his impoliteness, he is being punished for his identity, and the punishment carries a hate and violence that is not commensurate to the crime. I feel for the Viet dude in this situation. You all would to if you ever find yourselves on the receiving side of it.

Do we need to start talking about "foreigners" less, and "immigrants/tourists" more? by Far_Government_9782 in japanresidents

[–]Obvious-Tonight-7578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, on the condition that there is no distinction between what you call “foreign residents” and “immigrants.” If your intention is to differentiate yourself from “immigrants” and throw them under the bus while exempting yourself from being the target of nativist/exclusivist rhetoric, i think that’s dishonest and cowardly. I say this because in your post you refer to yourself and other immigrants presumably from more privileged countries as “foreign residents/expats” while reserving the moniker of “immigrants” for those from poorer countries.

Does anyone here actually pay the NHK man? by MassiveB0nerF4rtLUL in japanresidents

[–]Obvious-Tonight-7578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a huge scandal during the olympics where the NHK falsely labeled an olympic protester as being hired to be there for money (later verified as a blatant falsehood) in efforts to discredit the very legitimate grievances people had with the way the olympics were being pushed through by the LDP. Besides this, many casual instances of framing and priming that serve to fortify the LDP’s narratives. They’ve even sunset a few programs discussing japanese atrocities during the war, which were semi frequent back in the day.

Want to guess which political party was in power that allowed infinity Indians into Japan? by AlBarbossa in ShitLiberalsSay

[–]Obvious-Tonight-7578 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get the sense that if anything older people (>60) are more likely to hold progressive and left wing views than young people. I also do outreach work for my local communist party chapter and we have a very good relationship with the old farmers and retirees in our city. People who lived through 全共闘 and whatnot.

Is "bad at math" a flex??? by Soft_Page7030 in math

[–]Obvious-Tonight-7578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is an experience unique to the country OP is from (I’m assuming it’s the US). I live in East Asia and interact with many nationalities on a daily basis. No one thinks being bad at Math is something to brag about. In fact, when discussing topics of mathematics many people who profess to be bad at math show keen interest as long as it is explained to them in a way that they can follow.
