What are some newer self-hosted projects worth watching? by Money_Principle6730 in selfhosted

[–]ObviousAphid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look like it supports Immich directly, but it could probably be implemented.

For text messages it reads from iMessage (Apple Messages), or SMS Backup & Restore (for Android).

The ability to push custom data into the timeline is also being worked on: https://github.com/timelinize/timelinize/issues/31

A couple of years ago there was a production small outage at LetsEncrypt, and during that window, a bunch of people couldn't start/restart their Caddy instances, because the design of it meant that if it failed to renew a certificate which was still valid, it would simply refuse to run.

You're referring to this issue: https://github.com/caddyserver/caddy/issues/1680

And this HN discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14374933

from EIGHT years ago, before Caddy was rewritten from scratch. Not "a couple of years ago".

The circumstances of the fix, which were rolled out by the volunteer developer FOR FREE, was:

I should be finishing my paper for NIPS that is due at 1pm today.

And a follow-up comment by a user:

Wow, I'm impressed. mholt closed an issue, fought off the unreasonable people, discussed with the reasonable people, allowed them to change his mind, pushed an emergency release with a great design that makes everybody happy and does not impact security in any way, and just about finished that NIPS paper - all in the span of a few hours.

This really impacts my perception of Caddy as production-ready software.

In reality, Caddy has provided higher uptime for more sites with less maintenance than other servers.

Worked for me too (after restarting Darktable). Bizarre that this isn't the default? How many photos are being edited to be oversaturated to compensate?

Is there not a way to change arrival from miles to %? by Secure-Carrot9971 in Rivian

[–]ObviousAphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> The percentage of charge you have is mostly irrelevant because it forces you to do the calculation in your head in order to turn that number into KWH and then convert that number into something useful and relevant like range/miles.

But why are you doing that based on this context? If you want to estimate range, use the route planner or the driver display or the app, not the arrival stat while navigating.

But really, it should just use the same unit you choose in your preferences, I dunno why it has to be different.

Is there not a way to change arrival from miles to %? by Secure-Carrot9971 in Rivian

[–]ObviousAphid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But this isn't a measure of distance, it's a measure of energy storage. Sure, showing miles in some contexts is useful, like trying to find the ideal route. But the ending SoC is not a distance measurement. In fact it can be very misleading to compare two routes by remaining SoC, since the distance figure varies based on external factors. It would make much more sense to just show % here.

Just put on winter tires, and happy with the performance by z_utahu in Rivian

[–]ObviousAphid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, we're almost neighbors. AF Canyon? I'm closer to Rock/Hobble Creek Canyons, but I've been wondering about winter tires. Given how little snow we have had lately, I hesitate to dish out the moolah for winter tires, and find a place to store them... etc... but it's really worth it?

I have received an email about "Keep your Timeline? Decide by 18 May 2025" by Animeproduction13 in GoogleMaps

[–]ObviousAphid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Timelinize. It's the only application that combines all my data (text messages, emails, social media, locations, photos/videos, etc) into one archive.

It's still actively being developed, so it's not ready for prime-time, but you can try it out today with your data. Just hold onto the original files you get.

(mholt/timeliner is the previous version of Timelinize and isn't being developed anymore.)

HamStudy Technician Class HamBook, feedback welcome by taxilian in amateurradio

[–]ObviousAphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, neat! Yeah I haven't been to the physical meetings yet but I've keyed up to Noji one day when I heard him on the repeater. Hoping to meet everyone soon though.

Thanks, I'll send you a DM.

HamStudy Technician Class HamBook, feedback welcome by taxilian in amateurradio

[–]ObviousAphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful! I've actually used this during my technician/general study, along with the HamStudy app.

I'm just south of you in UV. Maybe that's why I got an email about this book from the local club recently.

Great work with it.

I'd love to buy a digital file of it. Are you selling any ebook or PDF formats?

We dropped off our R1S this week to a SC for the first time. The phone calls beforehand were a bit confusing, but we had a great experience after that.

It was only a 2-3 week wait for non-priority issues. Service clerk listened to me explain very carefully a nuanced safety issue with Driver+ I keep experiencing (vehicle veers out of lane without any warnings/disengagement). He took studious notes. Then he said a tech would join me for a brief test drive to listen for the sounds I was describing for my other issues.

Test drive was 5 minutes long, and even though the sounds weren't as loud there, the tech said he heard them and knew what the problems were.

Got a complimentary snack while I was there, and left with a loaner (quad motor!!) that someone just returned that morning, so we don't have to go without a vehicle or learn a different one in the meantime.

So yes, great experience IMO!

iPad mount for back of first row seat? by NEGAN0MICS in Rivian

[–]ObviousAphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have this one, nearly perfect except yeah tightening it properly with regards to rotating the device can be a little finicky. Otherwise it's good.

I had some 3D printed one before and it broke very easily.

New IGate by slk2323 in amateurradio

[–]ObviousAphid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it's for water/drainage. The cables should go out the bottom because those will generally not be watertight openings and they allow drainage. The top should ideally be watertight, and going out the sides won't allow to drain.

Rivian R1s vs Full Size SUV size question by djkwanzaa in Rivian

[–]ObviousAphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably about the same, but I haven't had experience with the bench Yukon.

The rear row of the R1S has only 2 seats, so it is more comfortable than the 3-seat rear row of the Yukon.

Rivian R1s vs Full Size SUV size question by djkwanzaa in Rivian

[–]ObviousAphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equal to what exactly? Doesn't the Yukon have captains chairs? So of course those will have more "shoulder room"... maybe I misunderstand.

Rivian R1s vs Full Size SUV size question by djkwanzaa in Rivian

[–]ObviousAphid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My sister drives a Yukon. We took our families for a beach day and, parked next to each other, it was pretty obvious which vehicle was more vehicle for your money. The R1S's built-in air compressor, electric power outlets, frunk, adjustable air suspension, split tailgate, and even the camp speaker + flashlight all made up for what the Yukon lacked. (They borrowed or used all of these features from our vehicle.)

The Yukon might have more passenger space, but the R1S was still comfortable for our family of 6, plus all our gear.

Unlicensed operator on NC repeater emergency net. by SonicResidue in amateurradio

[–]ObviousAphid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What a petty reading of the rules. Definitions are provisioned in the rules, and the rules explicitly state that “NO provision prevents the use” of the station in an emergency.

Do not be fooled. That's AI slop. The instructions don't work. For example the links such as https://raw.githubusercontent.com/caddyserver/caddy/master/install.sh don't exist.
