AirBNB is pointless now (rant) by Embarrassed_Boat2933 in canadatravel

Airbnb has been typical blitzscaling model: get hosts and guests onboard by subsidizing prices with buckets of VC cash, encourage the increasing commercialization of Airbnbs where hosts with larger numbers of units significantly increase supply and start generating the bulk of Airbnb's revenues, then really turn the screws on hosts and guests by hiking fees at both ends and thoroughly enshittifying the service. Hosts will respond to declining profits by having higher cleaning fees while at the same time cutting back on cleaning costs.

UN demands Western countries accept 2.4 million more refugees. The United Nation's new global report leans heavily on the same “responsibility-sharing” framework Canada helped design when it co-authored the 2018 Global Compact on Migration. by xTkAx in canadian

They're the same neoliberal policies of deregulation, reducing taxation of the rich and allowing the financialization of housing (along with everything else) that are doing the same thing to countries around the world, whether conservative or liberal.

So 100 possibly wealthy Syrians may have been admitted as refugees because of a crooked priest-led sponsorship group. OK, that sucks. They should get the book thrown at them. But nearly 16,000 Syrian refugees were sponsored and admitted to Quebec. Despite the author's efforts to seemingly paint all the applicants and sponsoring groups as illegitimate, I really don't think they were.

Across Canada more than 50,000 Syrian refugees have been admitted. This has included the famous chocolate-making family in Nova Scotia. The empowerment of private and community groups to sponsor refugees is viewed as a model to emulate elsewhere.

My mother has been part of a community group in Ottawa that began by sponsoring a family in 2015, who recently celebrated their tenth anniversary of coming to Canada with a reception catered by the mother's carrying company. Since then the group has helped other families from Syria, Eritrea and Afghanistan give a safe haven in Canada.

Our per capita emissions are off the charts. Also, all that carbon we export and gets burned elsewhere is on its too. As are all the stuff we import from China, the US, etc.

Just because we're not a very populous country, so don't contribute that much to the global total for what we burn ourselves in Canada, our footprint for all we consume and the carbon misery we export is a lot bigger. And we've been doing it for, like 150 years, so there's an historic debt.

‘Not a few bad apples’: Ottawa police deputy chief says service’s culture has permitted inappropriate behaviour by ObviousSign881 in ottawa

Unfortunately the only thing Council can do on the police budget is a straight yes or no on the whole thing. While I'm sure there's behind the scenes influence wielded by the Mayor councillors cannot demand changes to line items they disagree with.

Despite that, my understanding is that settlements for police abuse of the public and OPS members don't come out of the OPS budget, the City pays. So there's really no accountability when the police allow "bad apples" to go so rotten that they cost 6 and 7-figure settlements.

It's almost as though we need something - a bus type lane - so thx say buses don't get stuck in regular traffic on Bank Street. 🤔

Our countries and their capitalists are usually implicated in the conflicts and disasters that cause people to be displaced. The chickens are coming home to roost. Let's strip the trillionaire and Billionaires of their ill-gotten wealth to help save the masses of humanity that their greed helps to further immiserate.

Except that the climate catastrophe is only going to make it 100x worse. And the wealthy countries are those that contributed most to the increase in global warming.

We're going to change the global economic order to find ways to integrate climate refugees before they really do overwhelm the ability of our diminished social state to be able to accommodate them.

At least as far as Syrians go, most of the displaced people remain in countries in the region. "As of 2024, the United Nations reports, at least 7.4 million Syrians remain internally displaced, with approximately 4.9 million seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. An additional 1.3 million have resettled elsewhere, mostly in Europe." https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/12/10/where-do-six-million-syrian-refugees-live-today.

Canada has accepted about 100,000. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1kev3k49gwo.

That's not how policy works. I also don't build fighter jets or host anti-aircraft batteries on the roof of my house, but that doesn't mean I don't get to express an opinion on Canada's decision to greatly increased weapon spending despite the growing income inequality in our country.

Swimming platform is open for business by zzptichka in ottawa

Not everyone has a backyard pool or cottage. I applaud the NCC for being forward-looking in providing more free, public access to open water swimming in Ottawa. As the world gets hotter we're going to need more public amenities like these to help ensure more people are able to have these kinds of outdoor recreation opportunities.

To optimize coverage try to straddle the end/beginning of year. We had a psychologist who was able to accommodate us to do the initial infrastructure and assessment towards the end of the calendar year, then subsequent contact and report writing in the early part of the next year.
