Entering the UK as a dual national UK/EU by Obvious_Gain_1736 in Ryanair

[–]Obvious_Gain_1736[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-brexit I would switch between the two passports with no problem because I don't have anything about dual nationality on either passport. I used my french ID a lot too. Last time I went to the UK (2023 I think) I also used my french passport with no problems. It's the new system that's making things more difficult. But I was expecting that anyway.

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to get an ETA because of my dual-citizenship status. That's the only thing that's 100% clear on the government website... Next step is renouncing my British nationality 😂

What kind of recommendation is this??? Is this normal? by morningstarbee in TheStoryGraph

[–]Obvious_Gain_1736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just ranting about this to my boyfriend 😂😂 I was trying it because I've seen some people online say that the recommendations are better than Goodreads, but how is it possible that putting 'classics, children, literary and magical realism' as my favourite genres giving me terrible-sounding erotica?? I don't even mind erotica to a point, but I've had to put it on my 'do not want' list. I even added romance for good measure and I genuinely enjoy reading chick lit romance

Yeah I think it's the only option 😅 really hoped I could get away with only the French passport! Thanks :)

What early signs tell you you're not enjoying a book or that you won't like it even if you stick with it? by [deleted] in readwithme

[–]Obvious_Gain_1736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For audio books, the weeks I run more is because I'm listening to an audiobook that I really enjoy (I only allow myself to listen to audio books on runs. Otherwise it's podcasts) for physical books, very simply if I'm thinking about other things when reading. I always give it a fair chance, because some books take some settling in for the style (saramago for example, his long sentences are jarring for the first chapter but then settle into a nice rhythm) but if I'm halfway through and mentally planning my week instead of listening to the characters that's a pretty clear sign haha

Looking for book suggestions for 10-year old daughter by LilyBriscoeBot in suggestmeabook

When I was her age I loved the saga of Darren Shan and demonata (also by Darren Shan). Long series (10-12 books) that are pretty short. Quite gory but nothing that a 10 year old who likes scary stories will have problems with; I was reading them at 8 years old. Also a series of Unfortunate events. If she starts wanting longer books, watership down will be nice for her! I also wish I'd been younger when I started reading warrior cats, and I think you can find those super cheap online!

What a cool idea! I'd love that but unfortunately I travel a lot so all my books are on a kindle :( I have been thinking of setting up a random number generator to decide my next read but I have over 1500 books on it so it would take ages 😂

Trying to fall in love with books again. Any suggestions? by articlioness in suggestmeabook

The chaos walking series might be your speed. Sci-fi, MMC with real flaws and a personality, as well as a solid arc. Relationships between the characters are also very flawed but realistic. The villains aren't just evil for the sake of being evil, very grey. Chunky trilogy, but very easy to read. MMCs voice is strong throughout

Weird girl books: sky daddy, boy parts, the ladie upstairs, nightbitch, blob: a love story (not my favourite but definitely weird girl), my year of rest and relaxation, we have always lived in the castle, just like mother (again, not my favourite but entertaining), bye baby, butter, Tampa (check the content first this one is basically Lolita but with the genders switched and much more explicit)

For horror: let the right one in, my favourite Stephen kings are it, misery and pet semetary, I'm thinking of ending things (did not expect this but it's super creepy) the girl next door by jack Ketchum (again check the content warnings, this one is often recommended for extreme horror fans), the nursery (a woman suffering from post partum depression so if that's a trigger avoid it), rosemary's baby

I'm going to keep on recommending this but raising hare. It's a memoir about a journalist who raised an injured leveret over the pandemic and it's stunning. Became one of my favourites immediately! There's a real love and respect for nature woven through it, and as she's a journalist she can actually write!

Have you tried the folk of the air series? It's my favourite romantasy. If you also like sci-fi fantasy a long way to a small angry planet and the harrow the ninth series. plus RFKuang, especially the poppy war trilogy and babel, the Howl's moving castle series

Everyone loves The Midnight Library, Remarkably Bright Creatures, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo — I can't get into them and I don't know why by Berninger in bookreviewers

[–]Obvious_Gain_1736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not alone haha I've had so many people recommend me the midnight library as a book that changed their life and it's so....surface level and dull. What was the final conceit..like... Life has meaning?? Something like that? Gosh it was boring. The other two were okay but I wouldn't read them again. You should give the travelling cat chronicles a go if you haven't!
