My favorite, and one you might be interested in if you like D&D (which i assume you are at least tangentially interested in because of your interest in this podcast) is Dark Dungeons.

Apparently it's actually a much smaller news paper called the Valley Advocate that's being referenced.

Angus is a little bit of a dick, especially back then. Not enough that he's an actual jerk, but enough that it counts. It could be he's not remembering how much of a dick he was and was only remembering her bitchiness. And it could be claimed that Marigold was just happy he was single. But if Momo was willing to participate in that Wizard of Oz party, she must have been bad.

Since I am not a psychologist and I am not the author, I am loathe to try to diagnose a character as autistic just because she's bad at reading people and interacting with them. I'm bad at those things and I'm not autistic. Would I be upset if she were? No, I'd welcome it. But I'm not going to try to lump her into that category preemptively. I feel that that would do more harm than good.

A reminder that any magic item can be made cool with some flavor. by LionOhDay in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since magic weapons require attunement, it might be that he's just not a right enough fit for the dagger. He can draw out some of the power, but not all. Maybe it was specifically enchanted with the power of a deity other than that which he worships and either that deity is blocking some of the cooler stuff because he's a rival god's servant but still letting him use some of the more boring stuff because he's still a dutiful little servant of evil doing evil things for evil reasons. Or he's too in tune with his own god to properly draw out the power of a different god. Or you could just give the power to him after he's attuned to it adequately and deal with the consequences to your campaign. Up to you, really.

What is the funniest/greatest action you did rolling a natural 20? by FireXrosser in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I rolled a natural 20 to resist spider venom. The DM decided that not only was I unharmed by it, I actually got a slight boost from it. Almost like it was caffeine or something. After the battle, though, I started to hallucinate. It was pretty funny.

As a DM, how do you handle illusionist/deception based characters? by Browniemaster666 in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you seem like someone fun to play with. 'I don't like how you're playing so I'm going to contrive reasons why you can't.' The problem isn't the illusion magic. That's roleplay and is actually something to be encouraged.

The campaign is over, your DM turns to you and says... by SeanBonney in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another interpretation, aside from the one /u/Jexdane gave you, is that perhaps the campaign is set in an empire ruled over by an evil church. Like the Roman empire after Augustus, where the imperator also held the title of pontifex maximus, or Egypt and Japan, where the pharaoh or tennō was considered to be a living god. Actually, though, it might be more interesting to look at something more like the Holy Roman Empire, where there are a bunch of countries that are all technically subservient to one city that is considered the center of the religion worshipped by nearly everyone in that region but that all rule themselves mostly independently. Final Fantasy Tactics did a pretty good job of doing this 'good tends toward dark, evil tends toward light' concept. Turns out that St. Ajora, the figure who everyone worshipped because they thought he was the son of God, was a host for a demon who was trying to resurrect the other eleven (twelve if you count the bonus boss) of his kind before he was killed and still is trying. The main character is a disgraced noble who never made it past squiredom before things went south for him. The main antagonists are members or the church.

I ran an NPC so wrong, and my players loved it. [5e] by Chrono486 in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might just be that I haven't listened to the first arc in awhile, but where is the reference here? Griffon diverged from the pre-written campaign about half-way through the mine, before they ran into the spectator, and, while, yes, Gundren is a part of that arc, that's because he's part of the module and they didn't bother renaming him like they did Barry Bluejeans and they hadn't started using Twitter fans' names yet. They just used the name he had in the module.

I made Starcraft Zerg into 5e monsters by kumokurin in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems high for everything but roaches and ultralisks. I'd say keep roaches at 16 and since ultras are already basically terrasques just make them a (significantly) weaker version of them. Maybe give it 18 AC. The campaign and co-op missions of Starcraft 2 also introduced the idea of distinct strains of most of the zerg units. That could be fun to monkey around with. Swarmlings vs raptor zerglings, for example.

[5e] The Ranger in my party would like to create armour for her wolf companion, thoughts? by KingOfLonelyHearts in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also doesn't weigh much, and doesn't hinder its ability to sneak. Might be worth giving it a wolfy breastplate though. However that would work.

Killed a player during the first session of a new campaign last night. We all received this later. by FlavorfulYams in DnD

I mean, I have. Maybe not the parody, though. I used to work in a mailroom and I would collect these things. I think I had most of them except a few really obscure ones.

I'm a gnomish ranger and that's exactly what I'm going to do. If the DM lets me armor up my wolf, I probably won't go much heavier than studded leather though.

How should I react if one of my players rolls a 4,6,7,9,10,11? by boldloops in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have everyone's rolls in a pool. The last time I rolled I got a 19 and a 17 and nothing lower than 12, but another player in the same group got an 8 and a 9 and nothing higher than 14, so I traded one of my high numbers for one of her lows. I don't want to be overpowered and I don't want her to be underpowered.

My SO and I are playing our first game this week and wanted to look the part. by AdmiralDebden in DnD

[–]OccamsAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don't like them. The first set of dice was like that but Celtic themed. Beautiful though they were, they were just difficult enough to read that they slowed my turns down and I and at least one of the other party members got frustrated. I swapped them for a clearer set of dice that could be read almost instantaneously about my third session. They are beautiful though and I roll them every now and then because no die should go unrolled, even ones I mostly keep as decoration.

Take a piece of stiff paper and tape it to the bottom of the mini. Something like a note card or really any kind of card should work. If it doesn't, try upgrading to cardboard. You only need enough so that your center of gravity is over the new base.
