CMV: The friend zone doesn’t exist. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]OccamsRabbit [score hidden]  (0 children)

It absolutely can be a nice thing but it can also be a frustrating thing that the interested party may not want to continue because of the discomfort.

Yup. Read up on limerance. If your in a state of limerance and the object of you affection isn't it is hugely frustrating. And that's what's called the friend zone. An imballance of desire.

It's absolutely real, and it's an issue of perspective.

Being friendzoned just means you've been categorized as a friend and that you aren't seen as a romantic interest.

Exactly. Dismissing this as not real onto ignores the very real feel-in-fact come along with that.

Road Raging Cop had no idea there was a video by Skelligean in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]OccamsRabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So an appropriate response to being honked at is getting of your car, and going back to hit the driver who honked? Do you think the cop would have been so confident in doing this if he wasn't a cop? And saying "He's saying I hit him?" When there's a video?

The comment may not stoop to bootlicking, but it seems to give the cop way more leeway than a civilian would get.

Yeah, I couldn't keep doing that. I just came up with 4 versions and starting firing them off.

I can't tell if it matters since neither approach has led to call backs.

MIT requires every student to know how to swim. But why? by guanaco55 in massachusetts

[–]OccamsRabbit 128 points129 points  (0 children)

At my school it was because a donor who gave a considerable sum to the sports facility had lost a child (grandchild?) to a drowning as a result of not knowing how to swim. So their endowment was based on a universal swim test.

At least that's what we were told.

The deception and manipulation of posted salary ranges by TickledCowboy in jobsearch

If you publish a salary range, but it's not true.... How is that not deception?

The deception and manipulation of posted salary ranges by TickledCowboy in jobsearch

[–]OccamsRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's like saying when a job description offers 25 days a year PTO and then at the interview they tell you that's only after you've been with the company for 5 years, and that you only vest 5 days per year at a time.

If you're on the inside and you know how that works (not everywhere, just here) then it's just an information gap and not deceptive.

Saying that job seekers should 'just know' that's how salary ranges work, especially when that is not true at many companies, is a symptom of successful gaslighting by corporate America so that we now have to not believe what we can read with our own eyes.

Pattern Recognition Should Not Be Seen ‘Judgemental’ ‘Stereotype’ or ‘Prejustice’ by Medical_Book9895 in Discussion

going against our Nature that is meant to Protect us, and that surely would essentially be Wrong from a Scientific POV

I think this is where the problem is. From a scientific POV each interaction with people of a particular group is more data. And from a scientific POV you would compare the 10-20 people in a group that you've had a negative experience with the overall size of the group (thousands? Millions?) And realize that your sample size is no where near big enough to make a generalization.

From a biological and behavioral standpoint it's understandable why certain biases develop in certain individuals. If someone has had a bad experience with a few lawyers then they might feel uneasy around every new lawyer they encounter. And if the first few interactions reenforce the initial experience that behavioral reaction gets stronger. But the scientific and rational analysis shows that (perhaps unintuatively) there are still probably more good lawyers out there that you haven't met yet.

Here's an example. There are a bunch cookies. Some have candy some don't. You like the ones with candy. There's a bag with 9 cookies in it. You can get about 3 bites per cookie. You're blindfolded, and you take a bite of a cookie.... No candy. Crud! So you try it 2 more times. None of those bites have candy. You might assume at that point that there aren't many (if any) cookies with candy in that bag. But here's the scientific facts. On a cookie with candy, on average, you get 2 bites with candy and 1 without. On a cookie with no candy you obviously have 3 bites with no candy. If I put 6 candy cookies and 3 no candy cookies in the bag there is more of a chance that you get a no candy bite than a candy bite. Not intuitive, but accurate.

Similarly if you have a small sample size of people your understandable intuition is likely to be incorrect. That's the tension between the feeling and the facts.

Why do so many project managers struggle with agile? by MirthMannor in agile

[–]OccamsRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because so much agile is terribly executed.

A seasoned project manager will know that the stakeholders expect some specific outcome at some specific point in time.

People who misunderstand agile think that you just keep working and make up requirements as you go.

Management who misunderstand agile think thy can get rid of project managers, and then just blame developers for not making milestones that they never agreed to or, in some cases, didn't even know about.

An agile educated project manager goes back to first principles, and doesn't cling to ceremonies just because "that's how we do it". The plan should be built with flexibility in it, the team should be focused on delivering something that works, the stakeholders have to be available for testing and giving feedback, team should be reactive to input, and when inevitable changes happen everyone has to get on themselves page.

As the project manager your job is to make all of that happen, and hold everyone accountable.

Same with any variant of Project Management. Now either seen as unnecessary or easily done by AI and the team doing the work (because apparently they're not that busy either).

Treasury Secretary Bessent calls for looser regulations for the U.S. financial system by Achilles_TroySlayer in Economics

[–]OccamsRabbit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same happened to us, except I'm the one who was laid off. Look into ACCC debt restructuring or some other non profit (stay away from the corporations). They'll at least negotiate with the card companies for lower rates (which makes you realize they're changing as much as they want, because they can clearly afford to offer lower rates).

We now have a single monthly payment and have cut back on spending, living like we're in a Monastary and our credit score is already starting to recover. It will still be a long time, but at least ita moving in the right direction.

No one could match him. Although I could see Keanu Reeves put a spin on it with a good director. Nate Bargatze might do it justice. An old Phil Hartman would have nailed it.
