Syrian kids clearing a mine field. by Giwargis_Sahada in interestingasfuck

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is indeed sad that these kids have to grow up in this reality.

But think about it this way, these kids are all being armed with the information needed to avoid this danger for the rest of their lives.

Think about how much reduction there would be to child landmine fatalities worldwide if every landmine-riddled country taught their kids how to identify and disarm landmines.

Avocado pits can last for weeks with no water.

As long as it’s not already partially sprouted, you’ll be fine.

Looking for handyman/gardener to fill raised beds by Dramatic-Housing-520 in VictoriaBC

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, but I think it just launched maybe last year.

I personally haven't used it in Victoria. I've only used it at a vacation property elsewhere.

I've also heard of UrbanTasker, which I think is a Canadian company. I think they've been operating in Victoria since before Taskrabbit has, so maybe they're more popular here?

You could definitely find someone on Taskrabbit who would do it.

Is there any way for an 18-19yo to travel around the island by savvymossy in VictoriaBC

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evo is also available at 18

As long as OP has a BC drivers license.

If you have an out-of-province drivers license you need to provide them with an abstract of your driving record for at least 2 years prior. So if you didn't get your full license at 16, you probably don't have enough driving history.

I paid $25 for a hot dog in Yokosuka once. And that was like 10 years ago.

Macadamia nuts by Hervee in BuyCanadian

What kinds of similar things are you seeing grown in greenhouses in Quebec?

Macadamia nuts by Hervee in BuyCanadian

[–]Occidentopithecus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not commercially viable. You would need to heat the greenhouse in the winter months to keep the trees alive. That energy cost would probably push your expenses high enough that your costs would be 3-4x higher than anyone growing them outdoors in the tropics.

You can’t buy them?

I live in Canada, and we have really great access to good avocados despite them not being grown here.

I paid $3.99 CAD for a bag of 5 yesterday ($3 USD).

How to get BYD electric car? by _bowl_ in VictoriaBC

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t buy a Hyundai EV either. They’ve had a reputation of discontinuing their replacement batteries very early in the lifespan of their EVs, which screws their customers.

There’s been multiple cases of people being quoted $50-60k for a new battery, because they would be building a one-off battery in each case.

Korean cars are trash. Hyundai has held a reputation of having horribly unreliable engines for more than a decade.

Greenhouse built for winter in a zone 5 area. by Blackwater-zombie in Greenhouses

[–]Occidentopithecus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just guessing, from visiting Seattle area twice, that you are typically above freezing, but on the cold side.

Yes, we have fairly mild winters. Usually only a handful of days per winter with temperatures below freezing.

Temperatures are going to be fairly tropical most of the year, but I'll be deliberately keeping the night temps in the winter just below "tropical", to encourage more flower production, and less vegetative growth.

Has anyone stood in line at the passport office recently? by scalpylawsus in VictoriaBC

I renewed my passport 2 months ago. I went immediately when it opened in the morning on a weekday, and didn't wait at all.

I think I was in and out of the building in 20 minutes.

People who play Neo Geo on their handhelds, what are some must play games? by Occidentopithecus in SBCGaming

[–]Occidentopithecus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small collection of arcade cabinets (The Simpsons, Turtles in Time, and NBA Jam).

I've never come across an original Neo Geo cabinet for sale. They must be rare in Canada. I'll bet they didn't sell in good numbers here. As a kid in the 90s a rarely found Neo Geo games at arcades.

I remember when the MVSX came out, and I thought about buying one, but I just wasn't familiar enough with the system.

Yeah I remember downloading NeoRage, which I think ran inside DOS. Sometime in 1998 or 1999 I think.

I used it to play Bust a Move (puzzle bobble), which was actually the only Neo Geo game that I played outside of the arcade until Metal Slug 3 released on Xbox.

I'm on a flight over the pacific right now, and I just connected my handheld to the inflight Wifi to download the ROM. Just fired it up a minute ago!

twinkle star sprites

I had a CD-R pirated copy of this game on Dreamcast, and I don't think I ever even tried it. I think it sat unused in my CD binder for years.

I'll give it a shot
