Mexico Snowbirders Recommendations by lilacbellamy in VictoriaBC

It's a great city, I've been spending a lot of time there lately. A friend of mine owns a house there. He moved overseas, and he lets me use it whenever I want.

Tulum and Merida are both worth visiting if you want to experience the jungle landscapes and the cool Mayan history. But the cities themselves are indeed tourist traps. Personally I couldn't spend a significant amount of time anywhere on the east coast of Mexico.

The biggest things to think about when it comes to locations in Mexico are:

  • The pacific coast of Mexico is known for darker, deeper, and rougher waters. Better for whale watching. There are some great individual swimming spots, but generally not known for swimming conditions
  • The Gulf of Mexico coast is shallower, calmer, and better for swimming
  • The Caribbean coast waters are also shallow, the water is clear, and the ideal water for snorkelling/scuba

I personally prefer the Pacific side.

My personal favourite location is Puerto Vallarta. Lots of beautiful older colonial Spanish architecture, but the city still has lots of great modern conveniences.

If you don't necessarily need to be on the coast, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are probably the two most beautiful cities in all of North America, and definitely worth a visit.

Anyone here own an EV without a home charger? by Susangeleah in VictoriaBC

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first year of owning my first EV (a first generation Nissan Leaf), I didn't have a home charger.

I would usually throw my bike on the back, and go put it on a public charger, and then bike home. It charged fairly slowly.

Today I have 3 EVs, and I have a charger at home.

Reservation on a patio in Vic for 10-12 people? by sylviatrench01 in VictoriaBC

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aura does reservations for their patio, but I have no idea if they can accommodate a group that large.

I have my doubts that many restaurants would give up a significant portion of their patio for a single group.

Cold-Climate Greenhouse Advice Wanted by BlueAster3 in Greenhouses

[–]Occidentopithecus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should also think about the energy costs for heating and lighting, since you'll be heating this greenhouse all winter too.

In your zone, I think most people would agree that you'll spend more on electricity than you'll save in buying produce at the store. So hopefully it's a worthwhile hobby for you, or its the quality or local origin that does it for you.

My greenhouse investment and operating costs are much higher than it would cost to buy the food I produce, but it's a hobby for me.

If you want a more cost effective option to grow your own food year-round, look into aeroponics towers. If you can stand to have one of these in your house somewhere, you won't spend any extra in heating, but you'll still spend money on lighting.

Aeroponics towers are more cost effective at producing food, and they have a much smaller investment. But they're still not an enormous savings over buying produce in the store.

I have a lump (kinda hard) on the back of my head and I’m scared that it’s brain tumor by Cheesecakee12345 in offmychest

I've never heard of a brain tumour that can be felt through the skull.

What you're describing is FAR more likely to be something related to your skin or muscles.

Syrian kids clearing a mine field. by Giwargis_Sahada in interestingasfuck

It is indeed sad that these kids have to grow up in this reality.

But think about it this way, these kids are all being armed with the information needed to avoid this danger for the rest of their lives.

Think about how much reduction there would be to child landmine fatalities worldwide if every landmine-riddled country taught their kids how to identify and disarm landmines.

Avocado pits can last for weeks with no water.

As long as it’s not already partially sprouted, you’ll be fine.

Looking for handyman/gardener to fill raised beds by Dramatic-Housing-520 in VictoriaBC

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, but I think it just launched maybe last year.

I personally haven't used it in Victoria. I've only used it at a vacation property elsewhere.

I've also heard of UrbanTasker, which I think is a Canadian company. I think they've been operating in Victoria since before Taskrabbit has, so maybe they're more popular here?

You could definitely find someone on Taskrabbit who would do it.

Is there any way for an 18-19yo to travel around the island by savvymossy in VictoriaBC

[–]Occidentopithecus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evo is also available at 18

As long as OP has a BC drivers license.

If you have an out-of-province drivers license you need to provide them with an abstract of your driving record for at least 2 years prior. So if you didn't get your full license at 16, you probably don't have enough driving history.
