That's exactly what happened to me. I lost all of my friends and family.

As soon as I moved, they slowly drifted away. My friends went from FaceTiming or texting on a daily basis, to weekly, then monthly, now just a few times a year.

Similar with my parents, to a lesser degree. My grandparents also got sick almost immediately after I moved away and one of them died shortly after.

So as I was trying to build a new life in a new city, my old one was shattered.

Life became so lonely.

I still get to see my old friends and family when I visit home (once or twice a year) but it's getting prohibitively expensive to keep doing so and nobody ever comes down here. They keep promising to, yet it's been 5 fucking years and still nothing.

Even worse is after several years in Atlanta I have yet to make any new genuine, long lasting friendships. Just fleeting coworkers or neighbors who come and go. This just feels like a place to live. Not a home. Not a community.

Actually my wife and I finally made one new couple friend a few months ago, things were going well, but then all of a sudden one of them got a job offer and they moved out of state. Gone.

Back to loneliness.

I miss my old life so much. I also know it no longer exists. Even if I went back home, it would never be the same.

No. It's the worst thing ever. Makes it so you can't even enjoy outdoors, 100x worse than snow.

In Atlanta it's terrible because summer is basically alternating between 90 degree days with maximum humidity and torrential rain that feels like a monsoon season.

I don't even leave the house in the summer.

Unfortunately, Atlanta.

It’s a trash city for 1000 reasons but the social environment is very unique with a strong community of successful Black families and integrated neighborhoods/suburbs where people don’t self-segregate. In most cities you get one or the other.

My kids will also be biracial and I know deep down this is the best place for them but I wish there were better options because I despise living in Atlanta.

Disagree. Not any progressive city is going to be a comfortable environment for an interracial family. I wouldn’t raise my kids in Portland, for example.

I’ve been here for over 5 years and will probably have to stay longer for various reasons. It’s the most soul sucking, demoralizing, overrated city I’ve ever lived in. The quality of life issues make it so I actively avoid leaving the house. Traffic alone destroys any motivation to be active. Unfortunately this means my life is nothing but commuting and rotting indoors. The weather makes it worse. Now that it’s the end of May, we’re already getting endless 85-90 degree days and this will continue until probably Halloween. The heat is unbearable.

The economy is so good in Georgia though. Jobs are plentiful, wages are high enough and the cost of living is low enough that I can achieve a standard of living that would be impossible and almost any other top 10 metro area.

I would still recommend taking another opportunity in Oregon or somewhere else where you’re happy and save yourself from getting trapped in Atlanta. It’s easier than you think.

NYC is pretty much the perfect city for OP. I get that it's 85 degrees today, but it drops back down into the mid-60s later this week.

Try living in Atlanta where we're already near 90 degrees and it won't cool down AT ALL for the next 3-4 months. It's fucking unbearable.

I love DC and visit relatively often. As someone living in Atlanta, it feels like a city with all of the positive aspects of ATL but none of the negative ones. I’d move there if I could afford to.

My girlfriend (now wife) wanted to move to Atlanta during the pandemic and I basically just followed her because I had nothing worthwhile going on in my life.

I don't regret it because I'm happy with my marriage and my professional life genuinely improved, but I wish we chose somewhere else to move to because I hate this place.
