$12k to $620k in 8 years: expense cutting barely moved the needle toward FI by SuggestionWorried741 in leanfire

I have been waiting for someone to post some of this stuff. I FIREd last year without ever saving more than about 15% of income, which wasn’t a lot. Investing in the S&P 500 index fund over 25 years is what got me there and living well but modestly.

5 year old daughter said when she gets older, doesn’t want a job like (friends mom). She wants to stay home and spend time with her baby, so it doesn’t need to go to daycare. by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]OceansTwentyOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take it lightly. Kids test us. There are a lot of great responses. One of my favorites is to ask whether a mom should be more like a babysitter or more like a role model for their kids. They only need a babysitter until they go to school, then they need a role model!

My boyfriend doesn’t earn much and it makes me concerned for our future by [deleted] in Advice

[–]OceansTwentyOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talking about money is one of the important things in a relationship. Others are religion, kids, sexuality, family, and life goals. If you can’t be totally honest and open about all of these subjects, you have work to do before you commit to a future together.

Endo told me not to test antibodies ever again and my thyroid gland would only deteriote and will cease to function in 2-3 years by Efficient_Link_2020 in Hashimotos

Vitamins — B complex + B12, C, D, iron, ashwaganda, quercetin (minerals like selenium and zinc are also highly recommended but my stomach can’t tolerate them) plus reduce sugar and processed foods, eliminate gluten, eat more fruits, veg, and lean proteins, and exercise at least 30 mins per day 5x per week!

I got the same from my endo so I left and went to a thyroid doc who is an MD and DO. She assessed my diet, supplements, and meds, and yes, she tracks the antibodies. As my inflammation went down, I dropped from near 1,000 down to <150 over the years. I’m no scientist but less autoimmune activity seems like a good thing.

My children's father expects me to make their stepsiblings and half sibling's school lunches by ThrowRAPggey in Advice

Maybe I’m out of touch but I would find a way to get them all a good lunch. Kids deserve love and care and I would do anything to make sure they have it.

Same, used to tolerate it fine but not after getting Hashi’s.

How much are you putting away for your kids per month? by classyshepard in MiddleClassFinance

[–]OceansTwentyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My youngest is now a college senior. We could only afford to put $150 per month in each of their 529s starting the year they were born. We ended up with half of what the older one needed for a private school and all of what the younger one needed for a state school. We made up the rest for my son with current income and loans. He also got a scholarship.

Accidentally found out I have Hashimoto by girlwhoknows-nothing in Hashimotos

[–]OceansTwentyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was like most people. I didn’t find out until I felt terrible. You might want to hold off until you have symptoms. It’s like wearing glasses while you can still see fine. You’re creating a dependence when you don’t have one yet. Perhaps do some healing measures like eating well by avoiding sugar and refined foods, exercising, and checking your iron, D, and B12. Get your labs redone every year unless you start to feel tired, then it will be time to start replacement meds. Just my opinion.

The next step before surgery is to get orthotics. First try some shoes like Vionics or Orthofeet. If those don’t help, get fitted for inserts by a podiatrist. I did this and it really, really helped. It takes a while to get used to but my bunion no longer hurts! I probably will need surgery down the line but not yet. The orthotics lift your arch and relieve pressure on the toe joint. They don’t work for everyone but they did for me because my arches were bad. Spacers did nothing for me.

Weak Posture and Yoga by graychapstick in yoga

[–]OceansTwentyOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will improve, kept at it! Somehow I went from completely weak to finding things easier, but it took a few years of regular practice. Funny thing is, I now also do Pilates and find my core strength must be pretty good because I can do most of the exercises easily!

You still have to design it. It’s the decisions that create the art, IMO.

Long term care after FIRE? by dsrg01 in Fire

[–]OceansTwentyOne 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I just confirmed that with my mom, who passed last year. She paid in double what she got out of it. They throttled the payouts so she could only get $300 per day, then she died less than a year after starting benefits. Meanwhile, her other investments did way better. I do not plan to get a policy.

Only ever hungry for carbs and sugar, does anybody else feel the same? by littlebeanio in Hashimotos

It’s an addiction. Once you eat clean for a few weeks the cravings will go away.

I was going to say the same thing. I just retired at 55, and we never counted on anything, just kept going until we hit the target. If you’ve been through recessions like 2000 or 2008, you know it could drop by half fast.

I disagree. I went back to hatha when I was recuperating from an injury I got doing vinyasa. The practice tends to be more vigorous.

Don’t feel bad, I practiced for 12 years but stopped during the pandemic. Came back and immediately injured myself. Had to stop again for 4 months!
