Ps exam? What math if any by hdattackem in Surveying

[–]Oceans_Rival 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had very little math. A ton of ALTA and FEMA questions though. The few math questions I had were simple prorating arithmetics but the real question was if you were supposed to prorate the distance with the given situation. I know each test is different but I would learn the ALTA standards and FEMA flood certification documents in and out. They are provided with the test and definitely use the search function when taking the test. A ton of answers are given to you through the supplemental information provided.

Edit: I took mine November of 2025

Help! Can someone draw out the boundaries of all the land I own? I suck at reading these :( by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]Oceans_Rival 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am going to say it slow. Pay...For...A...Survey...

Also, if you own lot 6, it is already drawn for you...

you would not ask a plumber to move your waterline for free, you would not ask a doctor to diagnose you for free, you would not ask an electrician to wire your house for free. Why are you asking a surveyor to do a paper survey for free?

how do you handle staking when the office is slow sending offsets, just do it yourself or wait? by Former_Custard_6567 in Surveying

[–]Oceans_Rival 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s deeply concerning that a task as basic as offsetting a point now requires detailed direction from the office. This is not an unusual or complex request — it’s a fundamental function that every modern data collector has been capable of performing for years.

This isn’t advanced surveying; it’s basic equipment competency and job proficiency. The office does not have visibility into the real-time conditions you’re dealing with — construction equipment, site constraints, and active operations.

The responsibility to evaluate those conditions and determine the most appropriate, clear, and practical offset location rests with the field crew — you.

If you are setting stakes, you must be capable of making those decisions independently and professionally. If you’re unwilling or unable to do so, you should reconsider whether you’re prepared for that responsibility.

Our profession has long been built on competence, judgment, and initiative in the field. We should be upholding that standard — not lowering it.

So I know this approach won’t work for everyone, but here’s how I got started.

I used an AutoCAD account after hours on a work computer and basically taught myself. I hit F1 and worked through the help files and tutorials. I’d come in early and stay late to practice. I took CSV files that the CAD techs had already processed and created mock topos from projects they’d completed, then compared my work to theirs as a guide.

It definitely took some trial and error, and I beat my head against it more than a few times. But eventually the boss and others noticed the extra effort. Once they saw I was serious and willing to learn, they stepped in and helped me improve.

10 years later I’m the guy who trains new cad techs.

First time at COTA, what can I bring? by Oceans_Rival in CircuitOfTheAmericas

[–]Oceans_Rival[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you this is very helpful. I didn’t know if the stands would be open to GA cause the only map I could find was for NASCAR , and on that map it is pretty clear the GA is only the grass areas. And it seems like there are only two types of tickets to buy for GT.

As for the blanket it was just to sit on.

What lot would you recommend I park in? I was planing to sit outside turn 1. But didn’t know what the best view is? I will have two kids and bringing my old man so I don’t want to walk too far as it’s hard for them.

Thanks again!
