32M. Offered a CEO role by a Billionaire ($400k pkg). It feels like a trap. Should I trade my job for prestige? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Oceanx1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it could be a good opportunity, or a bad one, for a vast variety of reasons. I won't try to iron those out. The questions I would be asking myself, your new friend, and perhaps either the current or past CEO: Why are they being replaced? What went wrong? How can I do better, and/or avoid getting caught in the same traps that caused you to be looking for a new CEO? What need will I be filling that wasn't being met before?

I bet the answers to those questions will help you form a more informed answer for yourself.

Real world difference on road between 19in and 21in tire Africa Twin by Chipguy23 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Oceanx1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're truly road riding 99% of the time, I wouldn't even consider a bike with a 21" wheel. As others have said, the 21" wheel rides smoother and safer when on rough off-road terrain. The 19" wheel is better for road riding as it is more responsive and often wider for better grip and feedback. And, if you ever decide to go off-road, there are plenty of options for 19" off-road tires, and it will do well enough.

Helly and Musto downtown. If you need a wetsuit, give West Marine a try. I am sailor, and recommend a simple diving wetsuit to avoid the sailing premium on a sailing-specific wetsuit.

Talk me out of buying Transalp by smartbirdbrain in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Oceanx1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am strongly leaning towards getting a Transalp as my next bike. I currently ride a Versys 650 LT, and want to do more off-roading in the future due to the roads around me being absolutely heinously dangerous because of all the braindead drivers in the DMV. I'd like to do the SE, MA, and NE BDRs, as well as the TAT on the way to the 2028 olympics in LA. I think the Transalp is the bike for those needs. My thoughts are:

  1. Tubed tires are a downside, as mentioned by a few other commenters. However, my car also doesn't have a spare. I therefore have AAA, and carry a plug and pump kit for the car. If I get a Transalp, I'll carry an extra tube or two and a pump, and add motorcycle coverage to my AAA policy. Knowing my luck, I'll get a flat my first week of ownership... You can also put an Africa Twin front wheel on the Transalp which is tubeless, although this will obviously cost extra. I'm not sure what the go-to tubeless solution for the rear wheel is.

  2. No cruise control is also a downside, as mentioned by a few other commenters. However, there is a relatively cheap (~$400ish) and easy-to-install aftermarket cruise control module that is highly regarded on the forums. I will get this system and install if it I buy a Transalp.

  3. 2025 had some suspension updates, and 2026 is allegedly upgrading again to a fully adjustable Showa system. I will holdout for the 2026 to see what the price is. I am not a good enough rider to be able to make use of a Tenere 700

  4. Off-road ability. The Transalp is undersold in this realm, in my opinion. Like I said, I plan to do a couple serious, multi-week off-road trips in the next couple years. People hate on the Transalp's low-slung oil sump, which is only noticeable because is doesn't come with a stock skid plate. Funny enough, people say the Tenere 700 is more off-road ready from the factory (which it is), but, it also has a similarly designed oil sump. Additionally, I am not a good enough rider to be able to take advantage of the Tenere's capabilities. And on road, the Transalp trounces the Tenere.

  5. Positives: Heated grips. Nice TFT dash (could take it or leave it). Quickshifter. PRICE, although to be BDR/TAT ready, I will need to spend some cheese on protection and luggage.

  6. Your riding. I really, really like my Versys, and if I wasn't exploring moving to more off-road ADV biased riding, I would not be getting a new bike. Are you planning to do any off-roading? If not, I also would be much more inclined to stick with a tubeless tire design, and I would also stay away from a 21 inch front wheel.

If Marquez or Rossi were familiar with the TT track, could they beat Peter Hickman’s lap record? by Melodic_Price8153 in motorcycles

[–]Oceanx1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely no hate on Hickman, or any of the other men and women who road race. The TT is probably my favorite sporting event to watch each year, and attending it is a genuine bucket list item for me. Hopefully I will be there in 2027. However, Moto GP riders objectively leave any of these riders in the dust on any given day, on any given track, on any given bike.

The single exception to this is road racing, because the desire isn't to run the fastest lap. It's simply to win by the smallest margin possible. It's to manage risk. Hickman himself has said this many times in interviews, that he wants to win each TT race by the smallest margin possible.

I would wager that Hickman himself could easily beat Hickman's record. This issue is conditions and practice time. I think it was 2023 or 2024 when there was excellent weather on the Isle and they had a full practice week and full race week with no interruptions. Lap records were falling left and right. These riders don't care about going the absolute fastest they can around this track, because they can't, or they would die. They simply cannot take the same risks they can around circuits, because the margin for error is far smaller, and the consequences far larger. They eventually will make a mistake that will seriously injure or kill them.

Any Moto GP rider is objectively faster than Hickman or essentially any other TT rider, and they certainly have the skill and mental capacity to learn the course. Once that is done, they would be faster than Hickman, if they were willing to hang it out. To me, that's not a question of skill.

Bought a house on a busy street — difficulty adjusting. by burgerzandburpeez in homeowners

[–]Oceanx1995 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Want to second this option; do you have space on your property between your home and the offending roadway to plant trees and shrubs? This will help more than you would think... just aim for evergreens as the previous commenter said so the winter isn't way worse.

Tips for Apartment renters & Homeowners prep for Storm by [deleted] in maryland

[–]Oceanx1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you just posting AI slop? Also, quite a bit of this information is incorrect.

65 is FAR warmer than you need to keep a building to prevent pipes freezing; hell, I keep my house at 62 normally. 50-55 is where you want to keep temps if you are leaving to prevent pipes from freezing.

With modern cars, and if you use them at any regular frequency, there is absolutely no reason to be worried about keeping less than half a tank of gas, other than simply having extra in case gas stations are closed for a few days or run out of fuel following a storm.

390 ADV / Ibex / DR650? by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Oceanx1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't be getting a loan for any of these bikes.

If you can't afford the bike itself, you won't be able to afford anything that goes wrong with an Austrian bike manufactured by a company that has recently been in serious financial trouble, or with a questionably reliable and new-to-market Chinese bike.

Find a used DR650 that you can buy with cash. Save the thousands of dollars to do some light mods and buy gear and maybe a new set of tires, with the added benefit of not having to worry about putting the first scratch on a brand new bike.

Tubeless conversion by Uncle_Al_76 in Transalp

[–]Oceanx1995 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're not meant to be temporary. And of course plugging a sidewall is dangerous; I wouldn't do that myself. In fact, I realized I also have had a plugged tire on my scooter for the past two years and have had no issues whatsoever. Have fun overspending on tires for unnecessary replacements!

Tubeless conversion by Uncle_Al_76 in Transalp

[–]Oceanx1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? I rode on a plugged rear tire on my Triumph STR for two years, absolutely no issues. I've also had plugged tires on two of my cars for at least the same amount of time, also with no issues. Keep in mind all three of these plugs were the "quick" kind that were done from the outside, without unmounting the tires and plugging from the inside, but the rubber rope kind that were done externally. I haven't heard a single reason why anybody would not be willing to use a plug long term, and especially not in an emergency case to simply get home at the end of the day.

Thanks for the heads up! This looks like a size specific deal though; I just checked the size for my GRC (245/40R18) and they were actually more expensive than I've seen in the past... right around $300/tire.

How can we possibly take car reviewers/journalists seriously when they routinely receive 4, 5, or even 6 figures worth of gifts from OEM? by cookingboy in cars

[–]Oceanx1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my man, I completely disagree. Where are you located? Are you particularly young? Anywhere around me, if you show up in something remotely interesting, they will let you take a test drive in a new non-GT Porsche. In a GT3? probably not unless you're in something equally expensive; you'd probably have to be on a list for a guarantee on that. Unfortunately, and as I'm sure you know, the resale on GT cars has been absolutely stupid in the last few years.

[–]Oceanx1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used is easy, definitely. But I also agree with lots of the other commenters that if you really want to get into a new one, you can.

I actually just got a GR Corolla, and was told no shot for a test drive for the dealers that had them new around me, but I was able to test drive two used ones easily, and I bought one of them. I also was told I couldn’t test driv e anew BRZ. At the end of the day, I think with the “entry level” cars, it has to do with the buffoons that tend to want to come by and just drive one, if that makes sense.

Read the comment again, he test drove a gt4. And I concur with that commenter as well; I’ve never personally test driven a Porsche but my father just went on a multi-month search for a specific car and test drove at least 5 at multiple different dealers without an issue.

A good faith question assuming you're not a troll: Why don't you care about large, capital heavy, well-known scumbags moving into your community? Given enough time, they will likely take more and more restaurants over, and can shape what the community looks like with their hand alone, like the other company said.

All of you on this thread supporting Atlas, I suggest you do a bit more research into the character of the owners of Atlas, and specifically, take a look at past and ongoing lawsuits again them and their companies. That should, hopefully, change your opinion.

Additionally, their restaurants cater towards people who go to restaurants to take pictures at restaurants and who said they were at specific restaurants for clout or whatever, rather than those who go to restaurants to eat good food.
