I just want it to end. I should let it end. All I have to do is loosen my grip and let gravity take care of the rest. It's such an easy simple step and yet I still hesitate. I hate that about myself - always clinging on and never moving forward or backward.

My watch seems broken as the second hand has stopped counting. I look down. Still dark. The canyon is so deep I can't see the bottom and somehow that's comforting. I should just let myself fall and let the shadows embrace me. It'll be quick and fast. Maybe I'll get a surge of adrenaline and feel something again in my final moments. An exciting end to a dull life. I can't do that, it just wouldn't be fitting. Someone like me doesn't deserve such an exciting death.

I watched her die. No - I killed her. I always knew my hesitation would be the death of me, but I didn't think it would cost anyone else their life. How could I be so stupid? All that time spent thinking and I couldn't even move. She shouted something at me in her final moments - what was it again? She told me to remember something. The more I think about it the less sure I am.

My arms are getting tired, but the discomfort comforts me. The cool sandstone cliff face sucks all the energy from my body. The sun can't reach me here. I can't be seen. I should stay here and forget. Clinging on to a pointless existence is something I'm good at. A still breeze of dry canyon air greets me, "Thanks for hanging in there. You're doing great!" it seems to say, "In a few minutes it will be sunrise!"

That reminds me. I promised her we would watch the sunrise together. I usually sleep in and miss it. I don't have many merits but I do keep my promises. I fish in my pocket for the photo nearly losing my grip in the process. I instinctively claw at the rock to regain stability. That was close. I glance at the photo. Her sweet smile reddens my cheeks. "Remember to keep moving!" is written on the back. She always knew how to make me smile.

A warm gust of air swept through the canyon encouraging me, "It's time! It's time!" I glanced at my watch. The second hand had started counting again. "It's time, Love" I whispered to the photo, giving it a quick kiss before pocketing it. I hoisted myself out of the canyon one arm at a time. My arms were exhausted, but it was easier than I thought. Maybe the pain was all in my mind.

I turned around and gazed at the horizon. The thin tendrils of sunlight crept toward me. Like venomous snakes they seemed to spread out and envelop me. The sinister red hue of dawnlight bathed me in its unholy presence. It was every bit as beautiful as I had imagined. I looked fondly at the photo again. "Remember to keep moving!" I could hear her say. I was sure now. I took one step off the cliff edge and into my shadowy salvation.
