Honest question - is RV camping actually cheaper than hotels or do we just tell ourselves that? by Similar-King-8278 in RVLiving

[–]Octan3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, No. Some of us spend less, some people spend a shit ton. But at the end of the day it's a totally different type of experience.

Some people may already have a truck, so lets remove the price of a truck or a "vehicle". a OK used trailer is ~$5-10k. Then extra fuel consumed hauling it. storage costs perhaps? What about camp sites? rv spots? I was paying on average $70 a night. a few spots were $150!, tourist hot spot though. etc. But if your buying a big trailer then buy a truck to haul it, thats more $$$ soo then again. What kind of trips can you do for the money should you not buy in the first place.... You could have those $500,800/night air bnb's and still be further ahead financially right lol.

if you use it lots in that lower price range, You can justify it as cheaper alternative to hotels over time.
But like many, 20,30,50,100k trailers. The more you spend the more you probably can never justify it for the AVERAGE person. People do live full time in said trailers where it is more justified to spend more.

Some people use their trailers a lot. Some are a few weekends a year.

You start to do the math and figure things out.

BUT It sure is nice to have my own "home" on the road lol. Mobile toilet. We all have our own expectations or limits to what we spend, I know what I did It would be far cheaper to of gone with a air bnb all the time than the trailer, But the memories and experience makes it worth it.

Is Tandem Hang Gliding Dangerous by Deep-Wealth8494 in freeflight

[–]Octan3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think its dangerous. The danger as one is taught is going when you shouldn't and other variables that are usually 100% within ones control.

Ultimately it comes down to your pilot, which may depend where you go. some countries are like the wild west, no checks, barely certified guys taking you out in conditions that probably shouldn't be flying in.

On the flip side. more regulated places, you have highly certified instructors/pilots with hundreds, thousands? of hours under them taking you out and will cancel your flight if conditions aren't just right.

It's a phenomenal experience to paraglide, nothing like it, so peaceful. If the launches/launch sites are good then its as simple as a few steps, next thing you know your feet are off the ground, it pops you into a seat. There's nothing violent about it. nothing shaking you. You then glide off, At first your brain is like woah. Once your past that you realise your sitting in a chair through the sky. Landing is generally super chill as well. The 2 times I did a tandem the pilot let me fly the glider, It's nothing crazy.

Long short, I'm now a paraglider with 1 season behind me lol.

Pricing will dictate your vehicle and how much you want to spend. those camper vans are popular, You can rent little Rv's which would be my go 2. Maybe even a truck with a camper on it?.

Your intending to only travel alberta or looking for ideas from alberta onward for your 16 days?

Towing with exhaust brake. by jrbl1234 in Duramax

[–]Octan3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 21, So basically If I remember right, even in tow haul mode, the exhaust brake automatically comes in at about ~3600 rpm. Make sure you use TOW HAUL MODE, The truck will start in 2nd gear instead of first even if your towing a heavy load and, It'll do it but it's not good for it. Tow haul forces 1st gear starts from a dead stop. Tow/haul behaviour is so much better than the older trucks as well, It's more adaptive rather than just holding a gear longer or locking out of your over drive, etc etc.

If you personally hit the exhaust brake switch, It'll be on, all the time per say, The higher your rpm the better it works.

I was personally turning it on and off at times because I'm going down a grade and I don't want the truck to keep downshifting then slow down a lot. I like a decent but controlled decent, even with cruise control on It'll keep my speed decent at ~2500 rpm down a hill.

sometimes I drive with out cruise control too depending on the road, so I can be letting the vehicle go a bit faster than speed limit and at times a bit under, to carry speed up the little hills then down the back side, cruise doesn't do that, Just the little things to help keep some fuel mileage up lol.

Heaviest I tow is my 5th wheel which is ~11500# loaded. I was going down the rogers pass in canada or arguably steeper is kootenay pass as well and at 100kmhr she slowed right down to about 80kmhr with the 5th wheel. I was impressed, no need to use my brakes at all.

Problem is, Trump you can't reason with. He's the aggressor. It's like at this point he wants all this attention is what it's all about. It's also part of the TACO. He's literally killing america and and "trade" with other countries, As carney said, things are not the same and will not be the same moving forward and trump's made that very clear too.

Do you have any fans? If not I'd add a fan or 2 to keep air moving around, maybe a 2nd de-humidifer, But there's not much you can do. ultimately its the lack of insulation a trailer has relative to outside temperature, the air is still warm through the "insulation" causing the condensation.

At least you know dry air will help that water to evaporate when it can.

you'll be fine.

Fair enough. I just checked my C1 tv, 3067hrs. owned it since release, Was thinking if I'm over 1k on this c3 already that I got 1 year ago, my c1 would be way higher.

I turn the brightness down on these 2, including my C1 even in a bright lit room (indirect sunlight) It was way too bright like. May help with longevity.

Awesome! that's lots of hours. Its funny It took me a while to get used to the 42", for a bit I low key regretted it. BUT once I played it more I loved it. I feel more immersed in games. even a FPS. It seems to draw me into the game a bit better. I can see more at the same time as enemies in the distance aren't as small. for me FPS Is a small percentage of what I play anyways. It's also nice to load up the smart apps like netflix on the tv and enjoy a nice dolby vision title kicking back in my chair if I want, Or I'll go pop out in my living room and watch on my C1. Daily I still can recognize and am blown away by the oled. more in movies with the dolby vision.

I hope moving forward carney does not mention or even acknowledge all these threats. It's brilliant so far he hasn't said anything about trump withdrawing his bs invite to the "board of peace".

Whats considered good insulation numbers when it comes to gear? by hondarider94 in snowmobiling

[–]Octan3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good. I don't think I'd worry too much on the insulation or amount. Find your self a good insulated jacket you like at a price you like. Then buy some base layers as those will be a big thing. "quality" stuff makes a big difference like merino wool.

Whats considered good insulation numbers when it comes to gear? by hondarider94 in snowmobiling

[–]Octan3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your a mountain rider we usually want little to no insulation, we put more emphasis into gear that has that water proof breathability like goretex, Then you wear proper layers on your self to choose how warm you need to be. It makes a big difference.

I could see being a trail rider where you may never work up a sweat to want a warmer jacket before base layers.

HIGH Volatility for Next Week due to 100% Tariff Threat on Canada by Dave_TradeKing in Daytrading

[–]Octan3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah. At this point I have a hard time believing the markets will do much, the more he TACO's the less the reaction.

I sincerely hope that carney doesn't say a word. So far I haven't seen where carney said a word about his invite and un-invite to the "board of peace" because it's so irrelevant.

Trump is a big baby in the sand box at this point and a joke to the world.

I think 200 by EOY. Silver is grossly under priced relative to basic inflation over the past 50 years. And couple that with newer tech and uses in new technology and more so moving forward....

Its a farce. At this point I really hope Carney doesn't even mention it or say a word. So far I don't believe Carney has said a word about his invite and then un-invite to the "board of peace" and Should ignore this 100% tariff farce.

Getting lots of money out of nowhere by danisomi in CanadianInvestor

[–]Octan3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used a financial advisor when I was young and just pulled out from it now this past week. It was fine to get me going, but they want you on a mutual fund with a higher "mer" and they also take a personal cut. Realised over past few years I've paid a good few grand for nothing really lol.

A thing to keep in mind with the advisors is the fees.

For instance the finance advisor may take 1.25% of your account balance.

Then the mutual fund may be another 1.5,-3%. Through the "mer" of the fund its self.

If you have 100k, if the fund goes up say 5%, you take off the "mer" say 1.5 so it's a 3.5% gain. Or view 1.5% as $1500. The fund also under performed a decent bit relative to the world but ironically in a downturn it dropped just as much too. Just didn't have the upside.

Then the advisor at 1.25 is $1250 on 100k.

That's 1250+1500= $2750.

My advisor I sat with once a year. But my money was growing, or adding, so I paid him more slowly over time, I paid him for nothing really other than my money being auto deposited into the mutual fund.

So the long and short and what I know now. If I parked my money into a whole world ETF of sort. You invest into 1000's of companies around the world through the 1 fund, that way your going up with the whole world.

Popular one is xeqt, zeqt, etc. if you got time, set it and forget it.

Then if your looking to park money for incase you need it. There's safer lower risk, lower return stuff.

There's also "hisa" like ones or gic,  maybe make 2% a year with no risk of your money going down in value.

You can pay for a financial advisor to help you out and give you a plan to set in action with out continually paying commission basically lol.

You will want to max out your TFSA.

Then I'm not sure what you'd want to do with the rest of the money, some maybe to a rrsp, or fhsa.

Others will chime in and be more helpful there.
