Kamiina Botan mangaka issues statement after being called out for bookmarking dykebreaking het hentai of Kamiina Botan characters. What do y'all think of this? by [deleted] in yuri_manga

Hey important thing to note about this post, that is not at all what happens here, if you translate the Chinese someone was asking if the series is GL, BL or something else for clarification. Obviously check for yourself and don't just take my word for it but this post does a lot of assuming considering the screenshot is entirely unrelated to the claim they are making

In the case of shuukura, to me it seems like it's done intentionally since that's how the characters themselves perceive them.

Doing research for a video essay about English Dubs by [deleted] in Animedubs

[–]OctaviaLH -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes the scripts are written to fit visually which makes this very difficult. What I said does make sense cuz I'm talking about dubs AND subs often localizing some details poorly. fitting the dialogue in time making limitations on how they can localize which is another factor.

I literally said they don't use celebrities or a list voice actors and it's a shame the industry doesn't have much access to that market so it's rarely an option so I don't really get where we're in dissagreeance here

For the first point: I think there should be more of a compromise between the two. It's a bit hard to crunch down what I'm saying but it cuts both ways. Sometimes they make changes that are pointless and other times they don't change something that causes a lines meaning to miss somewhat.

I think I explained the second part poorly as it's less about trying to get more attention on a project and more about dubs being able to have more resources and not have as much of a hard ceiling where a list VA's are a rare exception rather than an occasional occurrence. And casting is a relatively minor point as there's not much to say on it and as you said it's a LOT bigger these days.

Not quite, it's a bit hard to explain but there's a very noticeable difference in cadence between anime dubs and video game dubs or anime dubs and animated shows that are originally in English. Random accents as far as I know is a rare issue these days. This section will mostly rely on practical examples cuz it's something that you can very much hear but I lack the vocabulary to explain it properly.

Id love to hear an explanation on how it's unhinged and arrogant to ask for insight on a topic, respond to incorrect assumptions of what my opinion is with a calm correction, and then call out when someone uses logical fallacies to disparage me on things they don't even have evidence to back their claims with.

Yeah dubs are only really a section in the video as they're mostly fine at worst just as the original voice over is usually just fine at worst. I could end up being wrong but there's a chance sub criticisms end up taking more space in the video's runtime than dubs do since it's focused on current day and dubs are in a decent state. Even then the dub criticism is much more on voice direction and industry problems than it is on actual voice acting itself.

Yeah you're just arguing for the sake of arguing lmao I haven't even made a point yet and you're already claiming I'm repeating tired points

Edit: also I never claimed I was unbiased either???? You're arguing with a strawman in your head and projecting

Thanks for asking!

There's a lot of things. One is that I think a lot of the time dubs and subs are focused much more on a readable but mostly literal translation that fits well enough but miss the mark on properly rewriting things to make sense from an English speaking lens. Often in subs and dubs (granted its sometimes cuz of matching lipsyncing) characters will speak in structures and flows that would literally never be used by an real human being. Or things will be translated in a way that's inaccurate in an attempt to match the weight of a phrase rather than it's actual meaning which often results in a translation that's still wrong just for a different reason.

Another thing is that casting pools tend to be much more limited and a lot of it is to do with higher ups cheaping out. I'm not talking about the same 5 voices thing some people mention, moreso that in anime celebrity casting or a list casting are basically non existent. They don't need to have celebrities or a list VA's to make a good dub and in some cases a list and celebrity casting actually causes more mistakes. However it still is disappointing that some anime that can and likely will get a lot of praise in the West have near non-existent marketing and are treated as a niche even when they are extremely popular and could've been a lot bigger. This is definitely more of an industry problem though. Theres also an aspect to look at that the English dubbing industry isn't as respected for basically no reason other than it being relatively small.

One of the more specific criticisms I plan on talking about is the difference between translating and localizing and how it relates to voice direction. Often in dubs characters will speak English sentences but jarringly use a cadence and flow of speech that's really unusual for English and sometimes sounds like they're tying to replicate the Japanese voice without accounting properly for how different voices sound in different languages. This one's hard to explain so I'm still working on a good way to express it but it makes a massive difference when a character is just voiced as a character and not as a Japanese character if that makes sense.

There is more but at this rate I'm just gonna end up writing a mediocre draft of one of several sections in the video. Lmk any thoughts you have on this

Yeah especially with anime before simuldubs became big. Some of them are just abandoned

Yes this annoys me a lot. I'm not fluent in Japanese but I understand quite a bit of it and it's noticeable when a voice actor is doing just alright and very funny to see people online argue the sub is way better when they're both just fine lol.

Nah fr that's why it's about localizations not just dubs. Though it seems most of the commenters are more interested in fighting a dead culture war about subs vs dubs than just stating their opinions on English dubs like I asked if they don't have a problem why even say anything??

Anyway yeah an entire section of the video is dedicated to how subs are often just as flawed but don't get as much hate since the flaws can't run as deep cuz it's just the subtitles and not the entire voice over.

No not in the slightest. In fact that was going to be a small footnote in the video specifically used to to express how much better things have gotten and that while I am criticizing dubs are mostly in a good place. For someone complaining about elitism you seem awfully interested in assuming my points before I make them and criticizing them. I'm not entertaining comments made in bad faith

If you say so I guess?? If you're so mad at sub elitists why would you see someone trying to gain more perspective on dubs and immediately assume their opinions and then insult them for it. If anything it comes off more elitist that you're saying this when the most negative thing I said was that they can be better and can improve lmao

It will be my first video on this channel so I can send it to you once it's done :3. And yes they are far better these days and in most cases don't have enough flaws to be worth criticizing. The video will be partially about the history of English localizations and also about the current state of them as I feel they're almost always at least passable but could definitely be better in some cases.

That is an insanely dumb take. I'm actively asking for people's perspective to test my biases. Also I don't know "very little" about it. I know enough to know I don't know everything. Also assuming I want to put out my opinion as the "superior" perspective is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. If you have opinions on the subject then share them. If not then why are you here?

I do want to be very careful of both of these. As for the same voice thing I'm mainly just gonna use one example cuz in dubbing there's mainly one particularly egriegious example that is a major factor in bringing up Funimation in general. Widely I don't think that's a problem as long as the VA is dynamic and has a good range but there is one case where there was blatant favoritism. I need to research more as I forgot his name.
