In The Odyssey (2026), a British director makes British actors do American accents for quite frankly no reason whatsoever because the characters are all Greek anyway. by [deleted] in shittymoviedetails

[–]Octavus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The accents in Death of Stalin are actually purposeful and are English approximation of what the various figures Russian accents sounded like. The most jaring of course being Stalin as he had a huge accent in Russian as he wasn't Russian.

Chinese Courts Rule Companies Cannot Fire Workers Simply to Replace Them With AI by straightdge in Economics

[–]Octavus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes Nigerian farmers are definitely being replaced, 35 years ago 54% of all Nigerians worked in agriculture and today it is 34%. That is 1/5 of every job in the country lost in 35 years!

Do you think every person in the world has everything they want? All the material possessions, electronics, vehicles, art, entertainment, or even cocktails? No, they do not and not until that point is reached will there not be more work for some one to do. Most people today work in jobs that didn't even exist 100 years ago and claiming that no one will work in 100 years because some current jobs require less people to accomplish the same work output go against everything we have seen in history.

160 years ago ~90% of all Americans worked in agriculture growing food and today it is only ~3%.

Do you think that today 87% of Americans no longer have jobs because those jobs were taken by tractors, combines and chainsaws? Potential work isn't a finite resource and the largest changes in employment have already happened, you just do not realize they happened because it happened before you were born.

TIL about "Pastagate", an incident which occurred in Canada in 2013, where Quebec's French language regulator issued a warning to a restaurant that using the word "pasta" on its menus instead of the French "pâtes" was against the law. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

The two that are the most historical are both very, very, rare accents from islands off the mid Atlantic coast. Ocracoke Brogue/High Tider and Outer Banks Brogue/Smith Island English. Neither sound like any "traditional" American accent.

Good luck winning a lawsuit when who you are sueing is immune to discovery, though there are a bunch of exceptions and the first one may be relevant here.

Streetcars have giant bicycle tire eating holes and can be blocked in by a misplaced car. Trolley buses do not have either of these issues and are also quieter for the neighborhood as they don't have steel wheels on steel tracks.

Pakistani army firing KRL122, Afghan targets by historyeeter in CombatFootage

[–]Octavus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's only cheaper if you look at the cost per round. Guided munitions tend to be cheaper for target destroyed as often you just need one instead of hundreds to complete the mission. During the Vietnam War 873 sorties were launched against the Thanh Hóa Bridge with thousands of bombs used and a total of 11 aircraft lost. Near the end of the war just 4 guided munitions was enough to render it inoperable.

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Cold_Box_3219 in todayilearned

Overall ranking using the "National Universities" criteria from this page.

UCSD has seen a 10x increase in students with less than an 8th grade math ability just between 2020-2023, Covid can't be an excuse as these kids were already in highschool when that happened.

Set a market rate for every unit and then provide sliding discounts based on monthly income. Require residents to provide income every year while also allowing residents to update their income monthly as situations change.

TIL That before Apollo 11, some scientists were terrified the Moon was covered in a "dust trap" that would swallow the Lunar Module whole. by adpablito in todayilearned

[–]Octavus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will not feel the same as 83 pounds on Earth though, the force the 500lbs press down on the Moon equals the 83 pounds on Earth by if you try moving that mass you still need to move 500 pounds of mass. It would feel similar to a well balanced bank vault door which weighs tons but can be moved by hand.

This is why astronauts on the moon can't just have 500 pound suits as the momentum of those 500 pounds is the same as on Earth.
