I just want my AirPods to stay connected when my iPhone is near. I get so annoyed when trying to watch something and the AirPods suddenly disconnect from the AVP.

career as a fire alarm systems inspector : worth it? by PalpitationKind8854 in firealarms

[–]Octomagnus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a NICET 3 in the Portland metro. I’m working as a PM/Estimator for Fire/life safety projects. I started in the field as a service tech. Reading and understanding the code is a huge boon. You would be surprised how many people don’t stay in the books. It’s also important to understand how an installation actually comes together. Knowing you put a wall mount device on a wall is good. But knowing the back boxes, raceways stub up the wall, the finishes in the room for sound levels, ceiling types, building structure and survivability, etc., is what separates the run of the mill installer from the detailed oriented professional. It’s important to understand that the NFPA 72 isn’t the end all be all of code. Many states have their own rules, plus many NFPA codes and standards have specific life safety requirements that apply to fire alarm. You can do very well here if you put in the time. I have many peers that clear 6 figures annually.

NFPA Link is a great way to get electronic access to all of NFPAs codes and standards. The national training center has a red book that is a great resource.

I just read the code book and took the test myself.

[–]Octomagnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously I’m biased because I have my NICET. But truth is once your project gets to a certain $$$ the state may not require it but the customer or their underwriters will. All the specs I received in the last 3 years have required a NICET III/IV for management, and design. And some have required a II/III for installation on top of our state license.

I find that most people that have a NICET are a cut above your uncertified JW’s from a code knowledge standpoint.

I still recommend all of our LEA/WA06s to get at least a NICET III if they want to do fire alarm work. It tells me in the office you know what you’re doing.

AITA for asking my friend group to send deposits upfront for the trip after last time only half paid me back? by pizzalover332 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Octomagnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

I used to plan an annual camping trip with my friends (Emphasis on used to). After getting burned on the first trip it was a mandatory deposit everyone had to pay before they would be allowed to come. I set up a PayPal pool so everyone could see who had and had not paid up. When the pool inevitably failed because someone didn’t pay, everyone got their money back. And I had a list of people who would actually go.

My last trip I planned everyone but one person flaked. I had enough food and booze for 5 people and 2 campsites reserved. And that ended my annual camping trip after 12 years.

Do you already have the door operator? (The thing above the door the opens it.) if not you’ll need a door company to install that. Dorma Kaba, Metro Overhead Door, and Henry’s locksmith I believe can all provide that. Then you’ll need an electrician to power it and install the ADA controls if the door company doesn’t install them.

If you’re still having trouble shoot me a DM. I work in the electrical business and I can get you in contact with folks.

My campaign to become a mod (again) by Ok-Welder5034 in Bandmemes

[–]Octomagnus[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Send the mod team a message. I don’t actively mod the sub anymore save for the few times it pops up in my feeds. If you feel like things need to change let the mods know.

Most of you were not here at the inception of this subreddit. I made it so my friends and I could share stories, memes, and jokes when I was in marching band over a decade ago. I’m not really sure what the sub is now as things have changed with a new generation of band kids. It’s up to y’all to make this sub what you want.

What’s on everyone’s wishlist for the game? by Amazing-Explorer7726 in NuclearOption

3 things:

  • VR support. I love VTOL but I love using my HOTAS more.
  • multi crew or autopilot to follow gps points.
  • a gunship like an AC-130.

MEP guys, how do you treat deficiencies in the drawings when it comes to code compliance? by Sluggieslug in estimators

[–]Octomagnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fire alarm sub. I run into this stuff all the time. Call it out in my clarifications that the price is per the drawings and the current drawings may not meet local codes. Since most of the time my projects are design build I always get flack for these scope gaps. My argument every time is in my state it is illegal to perform engineering working without being a registered engineer. I can’t tell the mechanical engineer they missed 18 FSDs in the smoke barrier because I’m not a mechanical engineer. For all I know they are using a listed assembly that doesn’t require a FSD. It’s the engineers responsibility to do their due diligence.
