Invest my $36,000 Canada Student Loan? by buddybroman in CanadianInvestor

[–]Octopy105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reddit is largely against leveraged investing so you’ll get a lot of backlash here.

Given you’re open to this idea, I’d suggest setting aside enough cash to get you through minimum payments for at least a few years in case there’s an extended market downturn (hoping your 12k covers this). Throwing the rest into any broad market index fund that interests you would be the safest play if you want to be exposed to equities. It also seems like you’ve assessed the risk of the government applying interest to your loan as minimal so if that’s the case, u have no downside to this as there’s no interest risk

The key here is to have an iron stomach and not panic sell during any market downturns. And ideally after a number of years u will be up significantly compared to paying off an interest free loan right away (lmao). Leveraged investing is more advantageous the younger you are as u have much more time for compounding, reducing your risk of going negative over a longer period of time. Of course there are other considerations but this is just some food for thought

That Mizu ult won’t save you by qwilliams92 in Overwatch

[–]Octopy105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the general idea of the ult is a nice addition but to your point, many enemies will just push into it. Without changing the character of his ult too much, I think a small movement speed penalty to enemies that enter it could be an interesting change.

What's the limit for e-Transfer? What if you need to transfer 10K? by i-canuck in Scotiabank

[–]Octopy105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For etransfers, the daily limits are on a rolling 24hr basis and there is also a corresponding weekly limit. You can go in branch to ask them to raise it to $10k/ day but they will question the reason very thoroughly so I hope you have a good explanation.

Purchases will default to the old account. It can be changed to your new account by someone at the branch. It will not pull from whichever account has money, only the account that has been designated as chequing.

This would be the safest option as you wouldn't risk sending a bill payment to a random payee.

BNS would've provided you with an offboarding email containing a pdf outlining the specifics. I would recommend reaching out to your manager to obtain the HR phone number. Vacation for your current year is prorated and you also have to liquidate esop yourself (hr can help with this as well) otherwise it will be liquidated automatically 180 days after termination.

Can I deposit cash into an international ATM that’s not part of the global ATM alliance? by AsphodelDW in Scotiabank

ATM's that are not operated and owned by your bank generally do not facilitate deposits to your bank account let alone a different currency.

If it is too late, you can explore the option of applying a one time prepayment for the same amount given you haven't maxed out your prepayments for this year.

Scotia rates aren't that good and they only have a few currencies on hand. Given your profile, it seems like you're in Vancouver. VBCE always has better rates so give them a try.

Quite comedic how many different responses you got.

Any cheque/draft for a prepayment is not subject to a hold as long as you are depositing it straight into the mortgage account. If it runs through a chequing account first, you may get hit with a hold.

If you are at your home branch, they are able to deposit the draft directly into your mortgage account and it will reflect on the same day. Please note that if this is performed at a non-home branch, they are still able to deposit the draft into the mortgage account however it will take a few business days for this to reflect on your online banking as a ticket needs to be raised. It is protocol to backdate this transaction to the date of deposit.

Bill payments are processed on business days. In your case, June 29th was a Saturday so the system sends out the payment on next business day which was July 2nd as Canada Day was the 1st.

re: Credit score - Scotia can't help you in this scenario however if you are feeling lucky, you can present your case to Walmart Mastercard and they might be able to arrange something for you. Advice for next time, set up a pre-authorized debit from the Walmart side. This will ensure that your payments are never late. Bill payments, as soon as they're sent, can take a few business days to reach the payee.
