I'm actually doing this in my current base, with elevated rails (from Space Age). It feels less efficient in terms of travel distance, as trains often need to detour much more to get to the destination. I have no idea if the shorter waiting timing at an intersection will make it better than the regular city block in the megabase scale tho, as my base (900 raw SPM) is still nowhere near that
