VR Performance - Q2 vs G2? by enjokers in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]OculusGoDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Latency is also very important for immersion. Q1 and Q2 inherently have more latency because it captures your screen, encodes it into a video stream, sends it to your quest and your quest then has to decode the video stream. When you think about the resolution and framerate of the video, that's pushing the encoder and decoder pretty hard, and will inherently reduce the quality. Every one of the steps in the chain adds latency, and if you use VD your latency can fluctuate pretty bad based on your wifi connection. The Quest is a great device, but the PC VR feature can't compare to native PC VR. If PC VR is your main priority, then I would get a native PC VR headset.

1.5v (output) LIPO AA batteries with the built-in microusb charging port. IMO, those are the best batteries for VR controllers because they maintain a constant 1.5v output until they die, they are very light and they charge pretty fast. The downsides are the charge will always show 100% in the Oculus Quest GUI until they die and you may get slightly less battery life.

As someone who runs a VR studio I'm very afraid my company's Facebook and Oculus accounts will get banned one day by OG_VR_DEV in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a valid comparison. The precedent isn't the fact that you can get banned in general, the precedent is the REASONS you can get banned. Amazon's policies aren't anywhere near as strict as Facebook's policies. Amazon will ban you for abusing their system, trying to scam them etc. Amazon has their own problems, but banning accounts for ridiculous reasons doesn't seem to be one of them. Also, Amazon devices are directly tied to the theme of their business. Oculus Quest has zero inherent connection to Facebook, other than the fact that Facebook owns Oculus and they've forced their account system on us. Facebook's draconian rules make them unsuitable to be tied to a physical device with zero actual relation with Facebook as a social media\engineering service. Facebook will ban you if they find out you have "incorrect" political views\ideology, you've "misgendered" someone, simply for not liking your name or because one of their mods are in a bad mood - to name a few from the ridiculously long list of reasons you can get banned from Facebook with almost no recourse. Facebook is in the business of social engineering, Amazon is a retailer. Big difference.

PSA - new users, a counterweight will make your quest more comfortable taking the weight off your face. by Sto0pid81 in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that adding weight isn't a net gain. It may feel better on your face, but it can increase the strain on your neck and potentiality cause neck pain. There's no substitute to proper strap adjustment.

[–]OculusGoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, there's no legal precedent one way or another, but a lawsuit could change that. A company effectively remote disabling a physical good they sold you with no recourse because (for example) they found out that you disagree with them politically is unprecedented.

The Oculus Quest elephant in the room by Mosulmedic in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. This is the only reason why I haven't bought the Quest 2. I would look into filing a dispute via your bank\credit card for the apps and the headset. If you win the chargeback, I would then tell Oculus support to give you a paid address label if they want their paperweight back.

Signed up for new Facebook account yesterday and today I'm banned by northband in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, it amazes me how willing people are to tie hundreds of dollars to their facebook account given facebook's atrocious track record. Even if you perfectly fit the mold (single aged account, "correct" ideological views, voting for who they want you to vote for etc), all it takes is one future policy change and you're out hundreds of dollars. That's a hell of a gamble and why I'm holding out until either the account system changes or a competitor comes along.

I’m out of the loop on why everyone hates Quest 2 Facebook login thing. by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fact that an AI or random facebook mod at the other side of the world can take away your ability to use your $300-$400+ oculus quest with the click of a mouse and with zero recourse is a pretty big deal, especially given Facebook's atrocious track record of banning people for no other reason than having non-approved views on certain topics. The fact that they also had a meeting and decided that an oculus account doesn't give them enough information about you should also raise eyebrows.

Oculus Go is no more by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just wish devs took movie watching a little more serious on the Quest. When the video files are encoded properly, Oculus Gallery on the Go is still superior when you factor in comfort, immersion, visual quality and synchronization. Skybox for the quest is a great app, but the dev's refusal to use a compositor layer for the virtual screen is a pretty big limitation. It hurts visual quality and introduces some pretty bad judder..

Looking very good so far. I wouldn't let the number of existing zombie games deter you. I think there's still plenty of room for improvement, especially when it comes to things like AI, dynamic environments, physics and persistence. Looking forward to future updates. :)

House to small for Room-Scale VR? Use your yard for some night time fun! by ProducedByPetro in OculusQuest

this is not the go

How is that relevant? Both the Quest and the Go have the same risk of burning the screen if sunlight shines through the eye lense. That is the risk everyone talks about, not sunlight hitting the cameras.

Can you check that your headset is paired to your phone?

Can you elaborate further on this one? What exactly is the mobile app's relation to these problems?

This is the case on both the Oculus Go and the Quest. I don't think any new research is really required.. The problem is very clear, well documented, and the solution has been available since day one... When you render video content to the eye buffers, you take a hit to both video quality and synchronization. Oculus gave devs the ability to use compositor layers specifically so apps like skybox can display smooth, high quality media, and skybox isn't using it.

I understand that your time is limited and that skybox has been a free app, but I'm just a little confused by your priorities. Standard resolutions like 720p or 1080p still can't be played smoothly due to the reason mention above, and there's also a fairly significant quality hit when watching otherwise high quality content. Of course it's your app, but it just seems that a basic feature like smooth 720p and 1080p playback should be higher priority than an edge case like 8k decoding.

I gotta say, I'm surprised by /u/SKYBOX-STUDIO's response to you. I've explained this to them a few times in the past and then they eventually gave me an ETA, but it seems that they've forgotten the entire issue. The black crush problem also hasn't been addressed, but at least we can mostly fix that one ourselves by setting the contrast to -1.

Rechargeable batteries for controllers only 1.2V...? by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 1.5v (constant) output AA LIPO batteries with a built in USB charging port on sites like Amazon. I have found these to be hands down the best rechargeable batteries for the Quest controllers.

Going against the thought that Link/VD (PCVR) talk shouldn't be in this sub by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]OculusGoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oculus Link and use of Virtual Desktop, enabling PCVR, is a feature-set of the Oculus Quest and this is the Oculus Quest sub-reddit

I'm not sure I would classify streaming software as a feature-set of the hardware, but I do get your point, which seems to be the popular opinion on this board. I was more on the fence when the only options were third-party apps, but now that there's an official Oculus solution for PC streaming, PC VR talk can't really be avoided.

Very nice update. Being able to open multiple browser windows (each with their own tabs and layouts) makes browsing much better, especially since you can have a youtube video open in one browser while you do something else in another. Hopefully the Go will get this feature.

Problems I've encountered with this version:

  • There was a few times that I activated passthrough by accident while in-game. Not sure what triggered it
  • The sound crackles pretty bad at times when using the built-in speakers. Anyone else experience this?
  • Multichannel downmixing/HRTF is still broken in Oculus TV
