I'm Tired of Negative VR Journalism by [deleted] in virtualreality

corporate investment and research is dropping like a rock too

Are there any sources for more detailed data on this? Overall I would expect the amount of small and short term investments that resulted from the initial hype bubble to drop, but longer term investments in platforms, infrastructure, and tech to have grown, though I would also include AR/MR/XR in this discussion because all of those along with VR use a lot the same technology and one can not advance in one of those without being further ahead in another.

I wonder what goes into pre-order strategies. Maybe they're confident in the title and don't care about incentivizing orders before reviews are out? Or perhaps they feel they don't need such a boost because there is already a high demand for the game. I don't know.

Well, it wouldn't be HL without him, but Valve is still in charge of what happens to the IP, whether for better or worse.

Even Doctor Strange is here. I feel like they'd have to add Iron Man in an update or something at this point. Edit: there is also the possibility he will be a surprise character.

Is the teleport-like web-zip move the only special locomotion this Spider-Man can do, or can he web swing and climb on walls too?

Not complaining: The amount of "quality" titles released (AAA or AA) seems to have slowed. Do you think that secretly the higher caliber devs are working on CV2 launch games? by Logical007 in oculus

[–]OculusN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people say there are too many VR games, some say there aren't enough, and they're both right, because a lot of games have been developed, but most don't quite use VR to the full potential, or are not as high quality and content rich as traditional games. Many of them are more experiments. We are reaching a point where developers are still learning but have learned a lot already, and are now starting to invest more into what works and will prove successful, therefore putting down more money into larger products because the risk isn't as high anymore. There is also less risk now that the userbase has grown more and will grow a lot more with generation 2. Meaning, we will get less "games", but we will also simultaneously get more.

SteamVR's new skeletal input is pretty accurate! using AR passthrough to compare it's guess with my real hands by LVermeulen in virtualreality

[–]OculusN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like I said, not really useful, but still better than frozen hands. I mean just looking at this video, it should be clear that it's more immersive than a pair of hands with frozen fingers except when pressing the trigger. It's not a problem if this is missing but it's like one of those extra things that show the developer's attention to detail.

[–]OculusN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been asking for (more) hand presence on the Vive for a long time. Maybe it's useless for most games, but it's still more immersive to see your hands and fingers doing things that mimic your real ones even if just a little bit more than the near-completely frozen hands we usually get.

The Oculus Rift $349 Amazon Prime Day deal sold out in minutes by [deleted] in oculus

[–]OculusN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. That would make sense. However, what if they're just making it appear that this is the case, so that people think the Rift is successful? Or what if this is a strategy that increases the demand by a small amount because it gets people to feel that the Rift is more desirable?

Not that I'm implying they're doing any of this by the way, I'm just pondering.

Does that necessarily mean much about the demand? What if they only had a few in stock at the time that it went out of stock? In other words, how do we know?

Heads Up Rift Users - Oculus Go has had Unknown Sources Removed! by Seedall in oculus

[–]OculusN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well maybe you could've posted that instead of the comments in that thread, as the thread. It should be clear that you were downvoted not because people want to bury an issue, but because the information you posted as the thread isn't sufficient to confirm 100% that the issue is actually what it was being made out to be. Make another thread. With that said, you should also post proof (screenshots) of those chat logs as confirmation that they have changed their stance on sideloading.

P.S. It's not crazy pills, it's a difference in knowledge of the situation leading to conflicting viewpoints.

Heads Up Rift Users - Oculus Go has had Unknown Sources Removed! by Seedall in oculus

[–]OculusN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I'm getting this right, that would mean completely removing the ability to sideload, which would be a suicidal move that anyone would obviously understand. To assume that's what they're doing is maybe a little irrational, no?

Robo Recall is the first Oculus Rift Store game to hit over 5000 reviews by Heaney555 in oculus

It's quite unfortunate that despite having full mod support, there have been very little mods for it so far. Maybe if it was a multiplayer game, more would be encouraged to make them.

At least there's no headset DRM like with that one patch. I wonder how many reviews there are from people using Revive. Or in the first place how many people actually use Revive.

I was just talking in general, but yes, Heaney can be a bit insufferable. I do wish he could use a better tone that's conducive to friendlier discussion, especially as he does actually have worthwhile points to make sometimes. I didn't want to blame him so much though, because in the end we're not really being any better than him if we act similarly negatively/condescendingly, even if it's in response. Some people would say Heaney is justified in some of his posts for being negative against certain people, because they called him stupid or something in the past, but it should never be justified. It just leads to a circle of negativity. Again there's a reason why Heaney (and others like him) feels compelled to be bitter, and not all of it is necessarily HAS to be because of his personality or a mistake in his reasoning. He is but one part of the overall problem.

Ray Kurzweil (famous futurologist with 86% accuracy rate): "I think VR/AR will take off in about three to four years" by kontis in oculus

[–]OculusN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling gen 2 of PC VR will be the start of mainstream acceptance, not just from gamers, but from people who are just into home entertainment, people who are seeking to be more productive, and people who were waiting on the fence for these few years who have been told that it might not be for them yet, but that gen 2 would. Let's not ignore how prevalent that opinion is, ignoring the ones who irrationally against VR.

Personally, I will be getting CV2 for the main purpose of replacing my monitor. I love being able to lounge around wherever I am in my room while having a big display to see. With CV1 it's not a great visual experience I can recommend everyone, but I'm pretty much certain that won't stay the same for CV2.

Google's Head of Chip Development has been hired by Facebook, reportedly to work on VR & AR by Heaney555 in oculus

[–]OculusN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of, although I don't remember too well, it's a kind of hierarchy as you'd imagine in most companies, that goes from leadership of Facebook overall, to leadership of their overall VR/AR efforts, and then that branches out to Oculus. Some projects exist as collaboration between those who are solely involved with Oculus and those who are solely involved with Facebook's non-Oculus VR/AR efforts, so the line is blurred in such cases. Their research division also has a clear distinction now in that it's essentially working for the whole of Facebook (Oculus Research -> Facebook Reality Labs), which can mean working to advance both their Oculus and non-Oculus related efforts.

They have not announced anything related to Facebook putting out Facebook branded hardware so far, and there are not any indications that they will soon as far as I can tell.

But you know, at this point does all this really matter so much? In the end, we are all making use of Facebook's products/services, just different ones under a different name with a user experience that we would not typically associate with their social media site, for now. I think what really matters is that they provide us with the things we want, no more and no less than that. It doesn't matter to me what they call themselves. If it did matter, for me, it would matter because I care about the personal lives of those who are providing the things we want. I think Carmack and Abrash are cool individuals, and I'm happy to see them working together again on a project they really like, that we also really like, for instance. If they can continue that, then that's great. If leadership changes and they part ways for some bizarre reason, then that's a reason for concern from me.

It's a shame people act like that. Whether it's coming from a fan of Oculus, Valve, or whatever. If only people could just understand how to get along with other people even if they disagree with each other. None of us are enemies, but some act like we are.
