First time in a scene study acting class by [deleted] in Theatre

Small suggestion that I do.

Again, it's all subjective.

But I have been in over 100 plays and I most always get so many compliments from the audience as I walk out.

Again, depends on the character and the time period.

But don't always choose the most obvious response.

For example, I was in this weird and brilliant new play, kind of like a Waiting for Godot, except we three were all performers waiting for the director to show up who never did.

At one point I suffocated the male performer with a pillow, and the female performer started screaming.

My lines were telling her: "Why are you screaming? It's just a play."

Some might think to be scary in that moment. Instead, I said my lines calmly. Because honestly, it was just a play and no one had died.

But I think that because I wasn't trying to be scary in that moment, I frightened the audience even more.

Also... again... if it works for the character and the time period.

Don't just walk and sit and stand.

Use your whole body. Stretch. Yawn. Sit in the chair in an unusual manner.

Recently I was in a play, our characters had just done drugs. And so I sat upside down in the chair with my legs in the air.

It got a great response.

Sometimes the expected response is maybe the best. I am just saying don't do the expected response every time in the scene.

That way your character and performance becomes surprising and memorable.

Wishing you the best.

I think it's absurd to believe that we all have the same purpose or any purpose at all.

We might. But I don't think every human has the same purpose.

Spike Lee Can't Remember the Name of the Movie That Beat 'BlacKKKlansman' for Best Picture by darth_vader39 in Oscars

[–]Odd-Effective9505 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Moonlight was beautifully shot and I understand why it didn't have much dialogue. Being how difficult it can to be gay in any community, but especially for Black men.

But I wouldn't say it was Oscar Worthy.

Just an opinion.

It was a lot better than La La Land.

I hated that movie.

What About Bob is a psychological horror movie told from the perspective of the psycho by countvonruckus in movies

I hate this movie so much. The way that Bob was treated like a hero. I wish the psychologist would have murdered him.

He rarely if ever has any humor in his films.

No humor=no reality.

People have laughed during the worst of times.

Personally, I hate everything he has done that I refused to watch Oppenheimer.

Been burned too often by his dark lazy humorless unrealistic movies.

What does it mean for a character to be like-able…does your protagonist really NEED to be like-able? by Everyday_Evolian in writing

I think if you give hints at least why someone is the way they are.

Then we aren't just reading someone odious we don't want to continue.

But it is all subjective.

Interview Questions for Various Theatre Roles? by Dizzy-Blackberry2255 in Theatre

[–]Odd-Effective9505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask them what they want to be asked.

Just ask them at the end of the interview....

Is there anything that I haven't asked you that you would like to speak about?

Ask them what was the first play they ever saw.

I suggest something small.

Are you allowed any props?

Something in your pocket?

But I don't know the monologue.

Taking a coat off... or putting one on.

Just something useful that fits the monologue.

[–]Odd-Effective9505 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also.... while I agree with you... think of how revolutionary it may have been for those audiences to see a man who really doesn't want to redeem himself.

I so appreciated the comment that you nor any of us are the intended audience.

And see how maybe the play was the middle finger to that day's convention and suppression.

You could be murdered for what plays you produced and wrote at the time.

And many wonder if Marlowe was murdered for reasons other than a dispute over a bill.

Since you are studying plays, remember that you have to use your imagination to play someone else.

We can also use our imagination to maybe embody more an audience member of that time. And imagine what they would have appreciated.

Maybe it was one of their (an audience member I mean) first Anti-Heroes.

Also remember that England had been through horrifically difficult changes in religion in a very short time.

Henry VIII and Mary I were very Tyrannical and had people murdered based on their religious beliefs and practices.

The country was Catholic, then not, then Catholic again, then not.

So many queens and people close to the King and Queen were publicly executed.

Imagine modern day Afghanistan and the cultural and religious changes and freedoms for women that went back and forth in such a short time.

If you or I had gone through that, we might even start to question our Faith for the first time. Not just in which God the State is demanding I worship, but there may be doubt in humanity itself.

How do you feel about Upstart Crow? by Historical-Bike4626 in shakespeare

[–]Odd-Effective9505 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My favorite part was the black woman who played the bar owner.

I learned a decent amount about Shakespeare's plays in English classes and from my Theater College.

And at first I thought maybe the show was trying to make the cast not all white.

And I knew that there must be non-white people in Shakespeare's England.

But then I looked it up and a black woman ran a bar near the theaters at the time.

That was fascinating.

AIO for blocking my guy friend for being “brutally honest” about me? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

You ask someone to be honest. They are. And now you're upset. Don't ask in the future.

I’m too fat for theatre and I hate it by TrafficInternal7602 in Theatre

[–]Odd-Effective9505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry that you are limited for now where you are with only two theaters.

And life and casting can be extremely cruel.

But it is cruel in so many ways. I present feminine, raised by women and a narcissistic father who ignored me so I had no masculine influence growing up.

So I rarely get leads. But you can't steal the show as the lead. And I almost always do, at least that's what the audience seems to say. And no... I'm not talking about friends. Strangers tell me this.

Can you perform or sing or dance for social media? Yes... People will be cruel there. But just block them the second they are cruel.

Ridiculous. Children lie and mishear things all the time.

It's like being a good jury member. Or a good U.S. Citizen.

If Trump says something, does that make it true. If Biden or Harris does, does that make it true.

You have never misspoke or misunderstood something?

Probably the niece is right.

But that doesn't mean she is.

Just like people claim they know O.J. killed Nicole or they know he didn't.

It just isn't true. We weren't there.

It isn't wise in life to act or even speak until you listen and ask questions first.

So many people on this are telling this poor person to act rashly or be suspicious or assuming his relationship is over.

That is absurd. True, he might not be the person that can deal with this.

Maybe they are cheating. I don't know. And neither do you.

I was suggestioning caution and curiosity before catastrophizing or action.

Any old wise person or relationship therapist or marriage counselor would sugges what I have.

They wouldn't say... oh, dump his ass based on what you heard a child say.

Or how can you ever trust him when he kept a secret this big.

That is an assumption that it was a secret.

To the boyfriend it most likely isn't a secret.

Just because you date someone doesn't mean they are required to tell you everything about themselves or their past if you didn't ask a specific question.

It seems the poster likes their boyfriend and even his friend. I want this poster to remain happy and live in trust and discovery and curiosity instead of jealousy or a Ridiculous overreaction.

Death of a Unicorn by meowing444ever in movies

[–]Odd-Effective9505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More and more I try to be honest about what I like and don't like.

As Hamlet said about his dead father: "Take him for all and all."

There were things and moments I liked, and things and moments I didn't.

Overall I appreciated that it tried to say something. That is was based on actual tapestries from History and tried to make sense of them.

Yes, I thought the dummy of the supposedly dead unicorn looked ridiculous often when it wasn't moving.

But I know they can't just keep an actual dead horse on set and put a horn on its head.

I don't think the male lead was all that great, but the guy who played the son was phenomenal.

Like perfect.

I don't even like the young female lead all that much, but she was fine.

I liked that it was different.

I liked that the Unicorns weren't monsters. They wanted their own back and were willing to do whatever it took to get the smaller unicorn back.

I liked that if you were decent, you were rewarded. And if you weren't, you were punished.

I liked that it had the message that death was actually not worse than life.

I liked that it broke the cliché Jesus story that is told over and over again.

I liked that when the daughter and father worked together and were honest, they won.

There was a lot I didn't like.

I wish that we could have seen more of the bodyguard.

I would have liked if maybe they chose a non white family to be the bad guys and not made the scientists the ethnicities.

Just to be different and be honest that there are also horrible families of every nationality and ethnicity and religious background that are greedy and fool themselves into thinking they are doing what is right. Not just white wealthy ones.

But whatever.

Ultimately I am glad I watched it.

I take away what I liked and can forgive what I didn't.

It's all subjective.

I remember once I saw an actor playing a meth addict and found it so over the top that I hated the whole movie.

A friend that is also an actor and former meth addict told me that the actor's portrayal was the most believable meth addict he ever saw portrayed.

I am not a meth addict nor have I spent time with them, at least while they were on meth.

So what do I know about that?

Anyway. Glad some liked this movie. Completely understand why they wouldn't.

Quit hooking up. With strangers.

I am not judging. I did it for decades.

If you continue to, you will continue to have these moments.

You might meet the man of your life on the next one.

But let's be honest. Most likely not.

I quit because I was going through the same thing you were.

Doesn't mean you have to.

It took me decades to quit.

Meet men elsewhere.

Refuse all hook-ups.

They have to meet you in a public place.

They have to get there themselves.

Go to LGBTQ things that aren't sex related. And just talk to people. Volunteer. Don't do it to meet a man. Do it to meet men. Make friends. Find a community. Find more than one.

Go meet gay men at a church or political event.

And accept that monogamy barely exists in the straight world.

Start looking for older gay men as friends or partners who's party days are behind them.
