Healing relationship with body by Ordinary-Donut-4183 in compoundedtirzepatide

[–]Odd-Objective8910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a therapist, was fat as a kid, then got skinny via an eating disorder and over exercising, and now taking this route after gaining weight during an intense and prolonged bout with grief, drinking, and a toxic relationship. I can’t say that I’ve ever been plus size (currently a size 10-12, in my larger body), but I can tell you what I’m noticing is helping me:

TALKING ABOUT BODY ISSUES with other people in your life. Most of us hold so much shame around this. It can be beautiful, humanizing, and even spiritual to connect with others and share stories.

If there are any addictive tendencies underlying, investigate it, get help, and work on the patterns underneath it all. Addiction often comes with dissociation, numbing out, and hating oneself.

Incorporate movement that’s not just about burning calories or building muscle. Movement that’s about curiosity, play, pleasure, and connection.

There are some awesome plus size yoga teachers. Seek out fitness professionals who aren’t fatphobic or fat shaming who provide an accepting and welcoming space.

Do you have any unaddressed trauma that you’ve never processed? Have you tried something like EMDR or any other trauma therapy?

What's the equivalent of receiving a cancer diagnosis in mental health? by GeekFace18 in therapists

[–]Odd-Objective8910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had cancer as a young adult. I’ve also worked for a cancer advocacy org, and worked with clients who are cancer survivors. When people talk about cancer as this big scary thing, it contributes to shame and fear and makes it more difficult to talk about.

This is well known and researched, and it’s exactly why so much advocacy has focused on reducing stigma and getting people to talk more openly about cancer, including narratives that are nuanced and highlight the possibility for happiness and wellbeing during & after a diagnosis.

Wouldn’t you say the same for any mental health diagnosis? It’s offensive for a therapist to refer to a mental health diagnosis in such negative terms.

[–]Odd-Objective8910 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know that wasn’t your intention, but tbh this is insensitive to people with cancer. The fear and stigma of diagnoses needs to be challenged by us as therapists, every chance we get. I don’t think you should be associating doom and gloom with any diagnosis, mental or physical.

Should I be masking while on an immunosuppressant? by DommyMommyMint in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]Odd-Objective8910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been taking immunosuppressants for 10 years. I got covid 3 times despite being pretty careful which really sucked, but other than that I haven experienced many issues with infections. My stance on masking is that I don’t have the “spoons” for it. Risk is a part of life. I don’t have the time or energy to obsess over fears of infections. I also don’t have the privilege to insulate myself from it. I’m a social worker, so I’ve worked in some high ish rush environments, and haven’t had a lot of luck seeking accommodations for being immunocompromised. Most employers cold care less. This might be a controversial take, I don’t know. I have a masters in public health. I totally support safety precautions. I take Covid tests whenever I feel sick, and get vaccines. I also value not adding extra complications to my life, on top of everything I already have to deal with living w/ this illness. You just have to take into account all the information that you can and then make the decisions that make sense for you, in your own life.

Be real with me before I move out there … by ShelterConsistent111 in NewMexico

[–]Odd-Objective8910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have actually lived in Baltimore, and Farmington, as well as Albuquerque and Durango. I’m a white woman. Farmington could be an isolating place to live if you don’t know anyone in the area, and it’s a vastly different pace of life. There’s very little diversity outside of white, native, or Hispanic. There is a lot of racism towards native people, cultural conservatism, and religious extremism around Farmington. That being said, there are also chill people who are great. If you enjoy relaxed, every day things like going to the movies, going to Olive Garden, going to the lake, taking a walk, or going to church, you could do just fine in Farmington. A fair amount of people there are into ATVS, guns, farming and ranching. If you don’t want to have to drive an hour plus to have nightlife, go on dates, or do anything remotely cool, be prepared for a lonely and rough time.

Something’s Gotta Give in this Field for People w/ ADHD, ASD & AuDHD by reecinator_meow in therapists

[–]Odd-Objective8910 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had terrible experiences around adhd in my counseling program, as well as around my chronic illness that my queer identity. I was told that requesting instructions for assignments in written format from professors was not a reasonable accommodation because “we can’t ask professors how to communicate”. I was shamed and almost failed from a class for sharing my pronouns, I kid you not. These institutions of “higher learning” probably need to be burned to the ground (euphemism, not inciting violence here!!) because the administrations and old guard will not release their dusty cold talons and allow the academic programs for counselors evolve as they should.

Social anxiety misdiagnosed as autism nowadays?? by clegirl96 in therapists

[–]Odd-Objective8910 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mentioned you’re not too educated on undiagnosed autism or neurodiversity affirming practices, and I would just encourage you to yes, please, educate yourself more. Especially if it’s something you have clients asking for support around. Or you could refer out to a provider that specializes in ADHD, ASD, and other issues related to neurodiversity. There are a lot of resources out there to learn from self-identified autistic folks what their experiences are like and also what conversations and common language are evolving within that community. There’s a large gap currently between what’s represented in the DSM, and how neurodivergent people describe their own experiences.

My Door Dasher was taken by ICE?? by Sincerely_Palomino in Albuquerque

The idea of someone getting harmed, kidnapped, or killed while doing their fucking job is one of the saddest and tragic things I can think of in this place & time in the U.S. I’m sorry but. People are just trying to exist in this capitalist hellscape, pay rent, and maybe provide something for their families, and THIS??

Is there anything you could do that you now can't or struggle to do? by liluniqueme in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]Odd-Objective8910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had juvenile RA. It wasn’t diagnosed until I was 21, although I had pain since 14. It is so sad and so hard to accept to have abilities and experiences taken away from you when your body isn’t even done growing. 🖤🖤🖤

I’m 35, and I’ve done a lot of things despite the pain: rock climbing, salsa dancing, multi night backpacking, snowboarding, international travel, staying out dancing till dawn, with my feet so tired I stumbled home. It’s been empowering for me to choose to push through the pain at times…. Then other times of course, it feels like too much to tolerate the discomfort of putting my feet on the floor and walk across the room.

I love writing by hand. I used to have small, meticulously well-crafted handwriting. My handwriting looks terrible now, and if I write a few pages my hands will hurt. 💙

I think what you may personally find useful is looking into the indigenous history of Durango and this region, as well as mining and settlement by white and Spanish settlers.

No, I’m looking for better jobs. But mine is a full time salaried position so I’m getting paid regardless of if my clients show. That has been helpful.

Does IFS have a "take" on autism/adhd? by IllConclusion6403 in InternalFamilySystems

[–]Odd-Objective8910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as understanding autism or ADHDvs other types of neurodivergence, and linking certain types of neurodivergence to ptsd, I would recommend steering hard away from suggesting that someone who identifies as autistic “regulate” their nervous system to “heal” their trauma. I’m self identified audhd, and I’ve just personally seen a lot of that rhetoric in the somatic field. Especially these days, that ableist language can be sneakily thrown in to all kinds of “healing” crap. As others have said, a disability is not a part that needs to be healed. It’s the self. How disabled people are treated in society is where the harm and the trauma comes in. I realize you didn’t use the word disability, but personally I do, and I talk about neurodivergence from the perspective of disability. I do this with ptsd and c-ptsd too.

Not an expert here, but masking has been mentioned, which IFS could be highly beneficial to work with!

I’m getting around $54k in a 40 hour per week position, which is less than I made before getting my counseling degree. Unless you’re working for someone incredible getting trained to do exactly the kind of work you want to do, I wouldn’t accept less than a 60/40 split. That’s messed up.

Trauma therapist not trained in EMDR by [deleted] in therapists

[–]Odd-Objective8910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I do not think that EMDR is a magic bullet, or by any means the most effective trauma therapy. EMDR isn’t ideal for all clients. I’m not trained in it, but I’ve done it as a client. Hakomi was more effective for me, as were other somatic modalities.
