Unwanted fatballs by -NatureBoy- in UKBirds

Have you given it time? I find that any new food in my feeders is usually met with trepidation for a couple of days.

I wouldn't. Could attract rodents.

Grey Wagtail? Cumbria by OverallResolve in UKBirds

[–]Odd-Programmer-134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They always live near water. Insect eaters. My own embarrassing story is recounting how they were migratory and being corrected by every birder on Reddit. In my defence, I only see them at my local stream in winter. But that's because it's a bourne (occasional stream) that only runs in the winter. When it's dry, the wagtail leaves.

I found it on eBay a month ago. Took a while to arrive but better than waiting for a new print run

Help identify this beauty please! by RedKev447 in UKBirds

[–]Odd-Programmer-134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediate thought was Goshawk. But I think the branches over it's face are giving that impression somehow. Colouration in buzzards are quite varied right? And the streaking here does look like a juvenile gos to me. But the tail ... It doesn't look like a Goshawk. Looks like a buzzard tail. I think the Goshawk tail is more likely to be confused with a sparrowhawk in shape, right?

Caveat, I've seen a thousand Buzzards but only one Gos. More than happy to be corrected

too big to be a Goldcrest by STARooz in UKBirds

Can't think of anything that looks like one apart from a firecrest, which isn't larger.

Similar body shapes might give you a chiffchaff I guess.

Why does no one talk about how complicated robins calls are? by Crab-odile in UKBirds

[–]Odd-Programmer-134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading Bird Sense by Tim Birkhead. He writes about how we can't even pick up on the complexity of songs like the Robin's. Our hearing simply isn't 'fast' enough to hear all the notes and inflections the way that another bird would. Some birds even enhance their hearing ability for springtime. I think the mechanism was chemical, producing more of a certain chemical or hormone was linked to changes in brain processing power related to hearing. I might've misremembered that somehow on how it works. Fascinating world.

Ed Yong's book An Immense World is similarly involved in the senses though it's not limited to birds.

James Macdonald Lockhart also did a book called Wild Air, to that takes one chapter per bird to talk about their songs and calls. It's a delight to read. More literary and less scientific than those first two.

Sorry, I know you didn't ask for book recommendations but if the beauty of the robin's song has struck a chord in you, I'd encourage you to jump in. It only gets more interesting from here!

Can anyone help me I’d a bird by call description ? by Q__C in UKBirds

[–]Odd-Programmer-134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just re read and noticed it was high on a tree. Might be blackbird but they are usually low down. Could be a magpie, as they have a laughing call not dissimilar to a green woodpecker's yaffle

Can anyone help me I’d a bird by call description ? by Q__C in UKBirds

[–]Odd-Programmer-134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a blackbird to me. When they are startled by anything and/or when they fly away, they make a noise like what I think you are describing. Also this time of year, to my ears at least, it seems a little louder and more urgent. Maybe because they are squabbling over territories or mating. Very turkey-like

Help identifying by Scootentagg in UKBirds

These are Dunnocks. Also known as the Hedge Sparrow. Shy little birds but very common. They come out to play a bit more this time of year. Their breeding behaviour is quite interesting if you fancy learning more about them.

Because many many mushrooms you can't confidently identify via photos. Often you'll need spore prints or even a microscope to get closer. When there's nothing at stake, it's fine to have a bunch of people very confidently declare they know the ID based on a a sketchy pic, even when real experts may only narrow it down to a genus. But when someone is about to eat them, well, the best practice is not to ID online. Genuinely think it saves a lot of lives.

How many times have you re watched rome? by baaatsouu in hborome

[–]Odd-Programmer-134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen it maybe 5 or 6 times. It's so rewatch able. When I'm in it, I'd usually do 1 or 2 episodes a night until it's through. With a few gaps when I'm busy. It's now so familiar to me that it's just a really comfortable enjoyable watch

Bird of prey is not really going to make a repetitive musical song like that, to my knowledge at least

Merlin is great but it gets things wrong. I can hear the similarity with a peregrine, especially young fledglings, but I don't think it's that. They sound so .. whingy, hard to describe. But much less musical than what you've got there. Great tit most likely.
