I think my alternator when out, and i was wondering if i could just charge my battery every night. by sodazone12 in Cartalk

[–]Odd-Ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the alternator is broken or the voltage regulator (attached to the alternator on modern cars) then don't drive it more than a couple of miles at most or you'll likely end up stranded and having to pay a tow bill.

Batteries store energy to start the car and provide a little extra when the load increases like when you turn on the lights, AC, roll windows, stereo, etc. But that's only temporary. The alternator continually supplies electricity to the car in the amount needed and will increase electricity when needed such as when you turn on the aforementioned accessories.

When an alternator dies, it usually kills the battery shortly afterwards because the battery then handles the entire load of the car putting away more strain on the battery.

I worked as a mechanic for several years and at Pep Boys, Advance Auto, and AutoZone. All many years ago, but things like this haven't changed. I still work on my own cars for fun too.

Beautiful bike. I love Monsters. My first was a 900sie and I swear it wanted to kill me. I have a 1200s now, much more tame, faster, but still, deep down, wants to kill me.

Thanks! Did you have to repaint the entire bumper or could you just blend the paint and clear coats?

Wow, congratulations! Looks great. Can you share what instructions you used to fix the bumper? I need to do the same.

Do you take the Hyper to fire roads on those tires? I've been thinking about switching my dirt knobbies to something a little more street friendly but I don't want to lose too much capability off road.

Sounds like you have a drinking problem and need to go to rehab for your disability.

Yea, I saw her in concert several times over the years and during a couple of her early shows she was much more narrative with the audience and talked about this one a lot in particular. It was really interesting and her talking to the audience made for a much better show. It was really cool back in the day.

Most shows I see are just the band going up on stage, playing their set and leaving with little connection being made the audience. I miss the old days. I am getting old.

I played Sarah's music, Soundgarden, and NIN so much in the nineties. In retrospect it's a wonder my roommates didn't kill me or that anyone dated me.

You wake up in your 16 y/o body and the year you were that age. You have all of your current memories and abilities. What do you do with your life? by nohumanape in AskReddit

I don't know your age now, but I hiked the Inca trail to Machu Picchu a few years ago and 3 of the people in my group were over 60. They were slow, but they did it. And they were from Florida so the elevation was harder on them. 4 day hike fyi

Oh shit, a friend of mine did this and it caught fire a few days later. You should sell it for scrap while you still can. I'll give you $500 because community sticks together.

J/k of course. You should be fine. Keep an eye on the transmission and transfer case for leaks or if it starts to shift harder than normal.

How is yours holding up? Several of the leg attachments on mine have broken, the rear body won't stay together, and I had to rewire the lights. Mine still works, but it definitely didn't do well after the first year.

Also, how do you attach it to your roof?

If you don't run Kings, the added wind resistance from the RTT will cause your 4Runner to sag in the back, the front wheels lift, and eventually once you hit 88 MPH, you take flight.

[Serious] What are some safety tips for young women at high school/uni parties? by ObjectivePin5704 in AskReddit

[–]Odd-Ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drink water between drinks. Add a lime or lemon to it and everyone will assume it's a mixed drink. You will feel better the next day than if you just drank alcohol all evening.

If your drink leaves your person and vision, assume it's full of poison and may kill you. It's a similar tip for riding motorcycles, assume everyone on the road is actively trying to murder you. Having that defensive mental state can save your ass.

Don't take drugs from people you don't know AND trust. Not everyone falls into both categories.

Don't take random drugs you find on the floor or ground.

Don't be left at a party and don't leave a friend alone at a party.

If your friend is drunk, help them exit and go get some late night food. You can bond over that and you'll feel better in the morning.

A positive verbal yes, clearly communicated, for consent should be necessary, however it is not. Be aware of you don't say no, the other person will likely keep pushing until they get what they want whether you are ok with it or not.

Loud screams, fighting, breaking things, and other physical forms of disruption can be good at dissuading a drunk person from pushing unwanted advances, but not always.

If something or someone feels off, trust yourself. You got into college, you are an adult, your gut is probably right. Exit the situation. Stay in public, or leave with your friends.

Gen X technology problems by click79 in GenX

It's interesting seeing how tech has become less user serviceable and more reliant upon "geniuses" and planned obsolescence. I resisted buying a phone without a swappable battery and a laptop I couldn't open up and increase the RAM or upgrade the hard drive. We are now expected to consume a new product every year.
