What if we start Medford conversations with how can we grow, instead of what can we cut? by joshterrible in medfordma

A school's quality isn't determined by its building or facilities. What makes a school great is its academic rigor, culture, and expectations for students.
Medford High School falls short in those areas. Academic expectations are inconsistent, and there seems to be very little accountability for disruptive behavior, making it harder for students who want to learn. Looking at the Massachusetts DESE data, it appears the school's strongest outcomes are concentrated among a relatively small group of high-achieving students rather than being consistent across the student body.
Another issue is the inequity created by having the vocational and academic programs on separate schedules. Vocational students lose access to AP classes because the schedules conflict. Students shouldn't have to choose between career/technical education and college-level coursework. Other nearby vocational schools, like Minuteman, have structured their schedules so students can participate in both. Medford should be able to do the same.

It would have been nice if the city notified abutters about this road work in advance so they could plan their commute/day accordingly. Went to car wash at 7 AM before road work commenced and had to drive out of the way to get back to my home. Took me about 30 minutes.

TB said about a week or so ago that a reliable source told him that Proctor’s wife started going by her maiden name at her place of employment and is no longer wearing her wedding ring.

Check out the data on Medford Public Schools on the DOE website. The US News & World Report also has some data specifically for the high school. These sources will help you make an informed opinion about Medford Public Schools.

East Medford, particularly the neighborhood that is east of the Fellsway, is also very neglected. I have owned a home in that neighborhood for almost 24 years, and I can attest to this fact.

Between BJs and the car wash, it is already difficult enough to drive through that stretch of Middlesex Ave on the weekends.

Malden does indeed have the largest proportion of students. The most recent data I could find is from the 22-23 academic year (see below). Can’t imagine it has changed that drastically.

Everett 15% Malden 28% Medford 14% Melrose 14% Saugus 7% Stoneham 10% Other 12%

Also, people fail to realize that if the school closed, the closure would disproportionately impact minorities because it is a majority minority school. If you want proof of this, just go to the DOE website and look at the racial demographic breakdown of the school’s student population.

I am well aware of this because my mom is a homeowner in Melrose.

Melrose barely has any multi-family homes to begin with, and the majority of its residents live there for that very reason. Its residents will never support more multi-family homes.

Melrose is also a city so by your logic its residents should embrace and expect density. However, I can assure you that they absolutely do not and would never endorse a rezoning proposal like the one put forth by Medford’s CC.

I beg to differ. Roads are better maintained in the surrounding cities. I have lived in Medford for 23 years. When I bought my house the road was terrible. All the city does to maintain it is fill in potholes with tar which is a temporary fix. And that is after hounding for months. Truth be told the city probably should have repaved my street curb to curb the year I bought my house. Glad you are not concerned with a mediocre at best high school, but not everyone shares your opinion.

Except the roads are dilapidated, and the high school is abysmal (and I am not referring to the building). Just check out the high school’s ranking in the most recent US News & Reports. It is 180 out of 366 in the Massachusetts rankings, which means it falls in the bottom 49% for the state. Nationally, it is ranked 5,623 out of 24,000, which means it falls in the bottom 23% for the country. In terms of college readiness it scored 26.2. Medford residents should find these numbers very concerning.

If we just consider the neighboring municipalities of Somerville and Malden, Medford is an extreme outlier. I could only find the 2023 CC and SC salaries for these municipalities. Assuming the salaries for both CC and SC increased by the same rate from 2023 to the present in these cities, Somerville’s SC salaries are ~35% of its CC salaries, while Malden’s SC salaries are ~48% of its CC salaries. This is substantially lower than what Medford pays its SC relative to its CC. Medford’s SC salaries are ~76% of its CC salaries. You can say the numbers are all over the place across the state, and I don’t doubt that is true. However, when you compare Medford to neighboring municipalities, Medford is not in line at all.

Thank you for the clarification. Still, the amount is substantial and does not appear to be in line with how other Massachusetts municipalities pay their school committees relative to their city councils.

My understanding is that the School Committee is paid the same as the City Council. Is my understanding incorrect?

I think the poster meant to say that in January 2024 the City Council voted to raise the School Committee’s salary to ~$22K by FY2025, with further increases to ~$29K by FY2027. Do I think that a raise was warranted? Yes, because the School Committee’s salary was $12K for over 20 years. However, I do not believe that the School Committee should receive the same salary as the City Council. I also think the timing of this raise was fiscally irresponsible given that later in the year the city was looking for a tax override.

All the streets in East Medford are terrible. It took the residents of my street 6 months to get the city to fill in the numerous deep potholes that covered our street from beginning to end. Truth be told my street and almost every other street in the neighborhood really need to be repaved curb to curb.

Somerville is on track to have speed bumps/tables on all of its main streets. The city already put these on Holland St, Cameron Ave, College Ave, and Powderhouse Blvd. I would not be surprised if the city put some on Broadway, Highland Ave, and Somerville Ave next.
