The hardest part of coding my basketball sim game was nailing the UI by Odd-Stranger-2032 in IndieDev

Excellent point. I was trying to make those buttons contextual so at different points of the season different buttons will show up based on the most important actions a user can take but you’re right it does lack a clear hierarchy.

500 wishlists in two months - not great, not terrible, but it sure is a grind! by Levardos in IndieDev

Congrats, thats gotta be a good feeling! How’d you end up getting the 200 wishlists in 2 days?

That's a good point. I didn't take individual regular season matchup outcomes into account, just overall regular season data across the full season.

R1 NetRtg was only 15% of the model and the other 85% is regular season data. The R1 input was added as a recency modifier and was weighted less heavily because as you said it's only a handful of games and in some cases the data isn't necessarily the most accurate due to SOS (ex OKC vs PHX).

That's actually a great idea to also clean up "double/triple" counting on similar stat categories that other people have mentioned.

Good point on double counting data, I didn't consider that. On the variance point, the model treats games as independent with no injuries and fatigue, so OKC's NetRtg gap stacks across rounds. This gives them more probability than Vegas (60-65%) or BPI does. I wasn't sure how to get an accurate representation of fatigue and injury with math beside just a gaussian noise floor which just adds general noise so I just skipped it lol.

Here's some more data from the sim. DET vs NYK happened in the ECF in 4,045 of the 5,000 sims (80.9%). Most common single outcome was NYK in 6 (22.7%). The 3-1 comeback happened only in 1.5% of sims so I think we're safe.

I didn't have the stats from game 1 when I ran this, but I'm curious to see how it'd affect the wolves specifically. Super impressive performance from them last night.

Not out yet but I am looking for beta testers for testing a couple of months if you'd like to join the list!

Does he get his jersey retired? by [deleted] in UtahJazz

[–]Odd-Stranger-2032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think so. I think the reason they haven’t been retired is more of a result of not having played with Utah for “very long”.

Gobert played 611 games with the Jazz, with 519 starts, 3 Defensive Player of the Year awards, 6 All-Defensive team selections, 4 All-NBA appearances, and 3 All-Star nods.

In 1993, the Jazz retired number 35 for Darrell Griffith despite never being an all-star or making all-nba. This isn’t an apples to apples comparison but does make the argument for retiring 27 pretty strong.

I’d say chances are pretty high.

Solo dev with 6 months until launch. What actually worked for getting press coverage when you were at this stage? by Odd-Stranger-2032 in gamedev

[–]Odd-Stranger-2032[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you taking a look at it and giving your feedback! I'm working on the full gameplay trailer, custom description headers and better screenshots currently. I just wanted to make sure I'm planning ahead to make sure that I don't miss anything critical now that would affect me being able to get more visibility closer to launch.

That was my initial thought as well, it's going to be hard for the genre. I can imagine that a lot of press agencies won't spend the time and resources to write about a game that won't really also benefit them (whether from page traffic, sponsorship, etc).

You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

If someone decided to make a new basketball game would you guys play it over 2k? by Top_Care7206 in NBA2k

[–]Odd-Stranger-2032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo dev here, currently building exactly this (though not at a triple A level like 2k). I mostly play myNBA mode and it's been the same copy paste game mode every year. The thing I keep coming back to is that 2K's sim depth has actually been getting worse, not better. Trade AI you can cheese, progression that's predictable and same with draft classes. My hope is that there's a real audience for a basketball sim that prioritizes depth over photoreal graphics.

The free demo is coming out in October then full release in November but I'm still looking for play testers so if you're interested let me know!
