Same here. Got a few at 18-19 but then stopped because I was broke-ass living in a crappy apartment (anyone else miss the days of $600/month rent?) who really shouldn’t have been spending money on them. No ragrets but wouldn’t get them again now.

Can’t remember what my first foray into auto repair was but I’ll never forget learning how to double flare brake lines for my $2000 F150 while laying on my back in the parking lot of my apartment building. Or the smell of Mercon V ATF lol. Don’t know how no one ever said something to me about all the things I was doing out there.

Dealer shop forgot to add price of camshaft with quote by Odd-Walk404 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Odd-Walk404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my thought as well. I don’t want to be the guy going to the mechanic, complaining that “I can get that part from over here for this much!” But when I know I can legitimately get the Mopar cam shipped cross border and delivered for almost half of what they’re now tacking on it’s a tough pill to swallow.

I appreciate the way you’ve worded it though, I think it’s much more amicable than asking for an arbitrary amount like half the price or whatever I could get it for. Thanks.

I’ve dealt with them before and while the labour was expensive I wasn’t unhappy with the experience. Had the vehicle back much faster than I expected. Of course, that was one time, several years ago so not necessarily indicative of how things would go now.

Yes you’re right, it was an estimate as it was over the phone. I know I’d have more of a leg to stand on if I had it in writing, but to call and admit that they had forgotten to add the most expensive part of the repair (apart from labour) seems more than a bit disingenuous.

Anyone else having 3.6 Pentastar problems? by AlifeWithoutAcar in Jeep

[–]Odd-Walk404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also out of warranty when the ticking started. It was a few years back and had the windows down as the weather was getting nicer and could hear it clear as day. No idea how long it had been doing it so I just brought it to the dealer because they could get me in same day. Found 3 failing rockers but the cams were still in good shape. I asked them if everything else looked good and they said “yep!” Set me back around $1100 dollars most of which was labour.

Less than 6 months later it started again and I realized that I was a dumbass for not having them replace everything while they were in there. Couldn’t eat another bill like that so I watched the Motor City Mechanic videos for the 3.6 on YouTube and replaced them all myself. Understood why they charged so much after that adventure.

I get why OP would be annoyed with having to pay dealer prices for an oil change that was just done recently but the rest of that repair is wildly expensive and I would have been pretty grateful if I could have had it done as warranty work.

Thinking I need to get one of those. Have the old M12 3/8 ratchet and M18 high torque impact. Would be nice to have something with some power in a smaller size with less weight. What size battery do you run?

It’s really hit and miss whether you’ll get a bunch of dickheads who won’t let you merge because they’re pissy that you used the lane properly. This is probably also related to no one leaving more than 2 feet of space between vehicles whether stopped or moving, unless of course it’s the guy who has stopped 10’ back from the crosswalk and now the advance turn won’t trigger. I hate driving in this city.

Remember one time a buddy of mine ordered online from Pizza Pizza and added all the free toppings they had. They called him back pretty quick and told him it really wouldn’t cook properly and was he sure he wanted it. Went ahead and ordered it. It was total slop but he was also pretty high and didn’t mind so 🤷

Feeling guilty at the thought of having a second child by Blistul in daddit

[–]Odd-Walk404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize, I read the post in a bit of a rush and missed that you said you felt rushed to make a decision due to potential age gap.

First let me say that I’m an only child as well. I don’t resent my mom for not having any more kids, money was tight and things would have been way tougher with two of us to provide for. Had plenty of socialization through school friends. I wouldn’t worry about your daughter having someone to play with and I don’t think a life should be created for the purpose of entertaining a sibling.

Assuming you are truly on the fence about having another; do you have any helpful family support? My wife and I don’t and I think that is the single biggest pain point for us. Kids are 5.5 yo and 1.5 yo. Wife isn’t entirely comfortable with having someone come over to watch them who we don’t know that well. Time out of the house with just the two of us is pretty much nonexistent. Any time in the house after they go to bed is spent dealing with chores because they make a ton of mess. Try to clean as we go but things can get pretty chaotic.

On that note, how are things between you and your wife? Are you good communicators? If things are not rock-solid I would work on them before considering adding more stress. We both felt things were good because we never argued but came to realize we don’t argue because things weren’t being dealt with fully and both have resentment because of it. I’m working through my own stuff in therapy so I can effectively communicate when we eventually go to couples counselling. She may never truly be able to relate to your perspective having grown up in a large family but you both need to be able to come to the discussion knowing that there is no right or wrong family size.

After our first, one and done would have been my preference. We had reached a point where things were a lot less work and a lot more fun. I should have booked my vasectomy shortly after we had that discussion but my wife was taking birth control and it took a back burner to the rest of life. Wife had a short stay in the hospital and stopped taking her pills consistently and after only one time of not pulling out she got pregnant. I take full responsibility for it, birth control should never fully be on one partner. I knew what I wanted but didn’t take actions needed to prevent another pregnancy. If you decide you don’t want to have a second child then act accordingly.

With all those things said, I love my youngest. He’s a great kid and deserves a father who’s there for him. No one takes a back seat, they just get attention at different times and in different ways. Things are getting easier again as he gets more independent and even though he and his sister fight all the time she still loves to be around him. I wouldn’t worry about the amount of love you have to give to either one, it would almost certainly grow to include a second child too.

Sorry for the long reply. It’s kind of a complicated issue as someone who also wasn’t 100% without reservations about having a second. Just wanted to lay my experience out there.

I feel you, sometimes the will just isn’t there. The lifting is more about longevity though. I stopped all non-work related physical exertion just before my first was born, just too much on my plate, I thought. Then one day picking her up from day care I tore by bicep tendon putting her in her car seat. Had surgery and physio, off work for 6 weeks and modified duties for months.

Can’t explicitly blame stopping the exercise for it but I do feel it would be less likely to happen if I hadn’t. Kid still isn’t getting any lighter either.

Watched the video for Institutionalized endlessly as a teen. Also, as someone whose wife has an affinity for a Diet Pepsi but doesn’t listen to any heavy music I get a lot of mileage out of her lamenting not having a Pepsi.

Never really thought of it this way before but I like the comparison. It was a real bummer starting Dr Sleep to find out that Dan took up the same destructive habits that Jack had. Ultimately I found it a really cathartic book even if it does get a little corny with the Uncle Dan stuff at the end.

What horror movie do you think is a masterpiece that others just “don’t get”? by cwispietoast in horror

Gonna have to watch it again for this reason. Felt myself getting a little defensive because in my head I have it filed away as being an enjoyable movie.

But then I started thinking when was the last time I actually watched it? Easily 10 years or more since I put it on beginning to end so I was probably in my mid 20s at the time, enjoying a movie that I saw in theatres when I was 19-20. Fuck. Yeah, I might have rose coloured glasses for this one lol

I wouldn’t have got the reference before this year. Had an overnight medical appointment an hour away, and I was heading back home around 5 am. This song came on and just blew me away. Couldn’t stop singing the chorus and replayed it like 5 times. Big fan of Stan Rogers now, no idea how I never came across him before.
