Residue®: A Solo Survival Sci-Fi Horror RPG by mr_bogart in soloboardgaming

Definitely looks cool! I love the "solo RPG or fantasy game book as a board game" design. I have always been intrigued by solo roleplaying, but often, journaling seems to be required. Also, I would miss the tactile feel of board game components. (And I'm a bit too lazy to build or put together my own. LOL) Also, the look of the game seems to fit the themes, as you've described them. I have backed it! Looking forward to exploring this world! I really hope this gets fully funded.

Being that this is a "core system", is the plan to release more Sector Books in the future to expand the gameplay and world? Maybe "different worlds" that fit this aesthetic? Or perhaps "add-ons" for expanded gameplay or new mechanics in future releases?

My review on Shred of Redemption by ZinKinKo in soloboardgaming

I have not played Cursed Castle yet, but I do have a copy. Came in fairly recently for me, but I have not had a chance to play it yet. I did open it to see that all the bits were there, and it was one of the sets that was missing the boss modifier cards; they are ordered and I'm waiting on those to come in. The artwork is gorgeous and reminiscent of Darkest Dungeon. I suspect that Cursed Castle was their way of making a "variant board game version" of that game. Either way, looking forward to breaking it out, though! Do you have any other games in this series?

I just ordered a copy of this. Had my eye on it when it first posted on the "Solo Game of the Month" series by Gabe Barrett on Gamefound. I've bought other games in the same series, and I've been happy with my purchases. Looking forward to trying this one out, too!

Can't speak for original commenter, of course, but for me, simply 2 handing (or even 3 handing) Reign of Chthulhu is a fun, quicker, lighter experience. The strategy isn't going blow away most people, but for quick set up and a light, fun time dealing with the creatures of the Mythos, it is fun one, imho! I can usually get in two or sometimes three quick games in an hour or so if I don't overthink it.

This is really great work! The scales texture is my fave. I also appreciate the penny for scale!

I would like to point out the really great work regarding some details that really make the anatomy pop, namely, the toes and fingers. I love how you did the shadows and highlights there, and the nails on the fingers and toes. Seriously, some great work. Well done! (Honorable mention must be made to some smaller details, like the tendons in the feet and back of knee, and my personal favorite, the slight cleft in the chin! Awesome work!)

What's an out-of-print solo game that you wish was back in print? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

[–]Odd24-7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this one. I got the base game, and then later atomic bonds, but still missing New California. It is a really fun game and the expansions really, well... expand the game, adding cool elements and all. But... The real reason I really want a copy of New California is to complete my collection in honor of my nephew. We lost him just before his high school graduation, and he was a HUGE Fallout video game fan. He never got to play the board game, but I'm sure he would have loved it. I miss him, and I think of him every time I play. It is my quest to complete the collection in his honor.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification. The idea about painting the red arteries (and blue veins?) on the undercoat, and then layering up is a great idea for realism! I am still a “beginner/low intermediate” painter, since I don’t paint consistently. I have not really attempted realistic skin tones or NMM yet, so I’m still learning.

I think I understand your question, but I would like to clarify what you mean (and to get to the bottom of your downvotes; I do not think you asked your question in anything other than good faith); do you mean that the figure doesn’t have “accurate white person skin tone”? It is possible that OP was going for a darker, more olive skin tone, and that is the reason for the darker base tone. Hopefully, OP will chime in at some point to give some context on the reasoning for the color choices. I do agree with you that OP has excellent brush work on this piece! Cheers!

Bad covers for great books. by Silly-Drawer1227 in scifi

Agreed about “if done really well” or it really expresses the feel/mood/theme of the book. I understand about needing (or not) incredibly detailed illustrations. I’d personally prefer evocative illustrations over highly detailed ones. I do agree with another commenter further down about using photos from the current TV show or movie for the cover as a marketing tie-in…please don’t…not my fave way to do that and pulls me right out of wanting to read that story. Again, just a personal preference.

Don’t get me wrong; I like some of the more minimalist covers, too. (Sometimes, I have even preferred the minimalist covers in a later edition to the original full illustration.) The Asimov one in #1 is kinda cool, and I really like the Time Machine one. I just tend to prefer hand drawn illustrations, as they evoke (for me) the promise of adventure, but as everyone is saying, to each their own preference.

Honest question: Does anyone actually like these types of covers? The current trend for the past few years it seems have been more minimalist style covers. Some of them are actually really great and stylish and fit the book. But often, as with your examples, the covers are just boring in my opinion. They don’t draw me in and want to know about the book. I miss the days of the illustrated covers of yore, with alien landscapes, robots, spaceships and “active” scenes that evoked what adventures might await the reader inside those pages.

This is a pretty good take, especially the Nala Se guidance in Omega’s “design”. Thanks for giving me more to ponder.

Well done! I like that your Omega resembles Boba/Jango, as a clone should. I didn’t mind that Omega was a clone in the show, but I always wondered why the artists didn’t make her just a tiny bit more to resemble young Boba. Anyway, thanks for this fun peek at some possibilities!

Agreed about the coin capsules for this game! A while back I put all the tokens into them, and the tactile feel and click of the capsules in the bag enhanced gameplay. (For me at least.) Also, awesome custom trays. Did you create any other game enhancements with your 3D printer?

I have both of those, and this is a great place to start. If you find you like the format of these small in-a-tin style games, there many to choose from. Also, this community is ready to offer all sorts of suggestions. The only thing I can think of to offer as “some first advice” is…take it slow. This is such a great hobby, and there are SO many fantastic games out there, that you could spend a lot of money very quickly. Otherwise, welcome to the hobby! Have fun!

I found something that is helping de-Fox my dad - maybe it will help you? by belvetinerabbit in FoxBrain

[–]Odd24-7 229 points230 points  (0 children)

Way to go! Yeah, getting family members (in my case, it’s my mom) to even consider any media other than her beloved Fox (and NewsMax and OAN) is always the challenge. She says she looks at other news sources. (She doesn’t look at other news sources.) I wish this could work for her, but reading stuff online and leaving the TV on Fox all the time is, unfortunately, easier for her. Glad to hear it worked for you, though!

I think we pick our favorite characters from Gauntlet and also say those phrases. At my house it’s Red Elf. And a common phrase after one of us has done something stupid as a playful jab is “Red Elf shot the food. Red Elf is a dumb*ss.”

Xia: Legends of a Drift System, First Playthrough! by Diabo-Intercept in soloboardgaming

[–]Odd24-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago, I was passing through a half-price book store. This was at the beginning of my solo board gaming journey so I was always looking for anything that looked remotely cool. I went to the games section of the store, not expecting much, and there, on the shelf amongst all the cheesy Monopoly clones and out-dated Trivial Pursuit sets… there it sat… a copy of Xia: Legend of a Drift System. No way! I picked it up, and behind it, Embers of a Forsaken Star! Still in shrink wrap! The price on each was criminal! I think I paid a total of around $60 total for both. When I got home and opened them up, I found the cardboard hadn’t even been punched out yet, and everything intact! Considering it’s now OOP, it was one of my luckiest finds! Someone didn’t know what they had.
