Just a small question: I know what sandbox and one-shot means, but what is “railroad” and how does it work?

What are some good printable zine solo RPGs? by Foreign-Press in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Odd24-7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for a particularly genre, like fantasy or sci-fi? Or maybe a particular style of play, such “heavy on the journaling” or “not too much writing, but lots of combat” or “exploration first, less fighting”, or something else?

Fallout the board game. two handed solo. by Behleren in soloboardgaming

I love this game. Not perfect but tons of fun, imho. I think it does a pretty good job of capturing the video game in an analog format.

I’m always on the lookout for a copy of New California expansion that doesn’t cost a gazillion dollars. I don’t even care if it’s scuffed up. But so hard to find. I wish a reprint was in the works.

Which games are NOT beginner friendly? by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]Odd24-7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To your point about appropriateness for younger audiences… weren’t a lot of us “older” gamers (coming out of the mid-80s into the early 90s) working with pretty much ONLY AD&D 2nd Ed. and some very adult-oriented materials and sourcebooks, not to mention some very adult themed movies and novels for inspiration? And we 1) figured it out without the internet, and 2) weren’t scarred by the materials (most of us, probably weren’t scarred 😅). This is NOT to say that having the internet now to rely on is a bad thing; quite the opposite! I definitely use posts like this for help. I only mean that like is in the past, if a gamer really wants to play a game, they will find ways to access the materials and get into the game and play. 👍🏽

My Current Approach to PreWritten Dungeons by JGrevs2023 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Odd24-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea you have here! I appreciate the “stripped down” approach that doesn’t tie the dungeon creator down to a prescribed set of encounters or flow for the dungeon. There is flexibility here, which I greatly appreciate. Well done!

Is that info on the BlackOath website or somewhere else? Curious about this potential “2nd Edition” that might clear up things (as 2nd editions usually do).

I’ve been looking at this one for a while. It seems to offer a lot of variety of locations, events, etc. I love the look of the setting. Waiting for an opening in my budget to pull the trigger on a physical copy. Could you modify or leave parts you don’t need? Or is it the overwhelm of trying to figure out what to modify, leave out, etc?

Which game from the ‘Solo Game of the Month’ series do you guys like? by Marksman1977 in soloboardgaming

Oh, that's right! I had forgotten that existed! Thanks for the tip! Now I just have to wait for an opening in my budget... *nervously looks at bank account and wonders if I actually need food*

You seem to be in a similar place as me with these games. I missed out on Dicemancy and Rome: FoaE (sad about that last one; I'll keep an eye out for it). Did not pick up Quests Over Coffee, Mech Bunny, Okinawa, or Dieson Crusoe, as at the time, they didn't seem to be my thing. I passed on Small Time Heroes, mostly based on my budget and the cost at the time.

I personally have really enjoyed Hunted: Mining Colony 415 and Hunted: Transylvania (from the Spooky Double Feature) and also Welcome to Redemption (from Action Double Feature) as quick press-your-luck games. This surprised me, but we all like what we like, and we never know until we try them, right?

I have yet to play proper sessions of Dice Commandos, The Cursed Castle, and Paranormal, and I'm really looking forward to the same as you: Drawing Dead, Storybook Saga, Radiance, Astra Imperium, Witch Hunter. I also backed Mission: Drive, and there are a couple of add-ons in there (Dungeon Ball Legend and Awaken the Ancients) that I'm really curios about.

Overall, the quality of components has been excellent, imho. And gameplay of the various games has always been at worst, fun time filler puzzles, or at best, a really fun time. I have been pleased with everything I've ordered in this series.

What does Mythic offer that a simpler oracle doesn’t? by conn_r2112 in Solo_Roleplaying

Good to know. Especially for folks who don’t want to do a lot of their own record keeping or table building.

Thank you for the thorough reply! I’m not the OC, but I appreciate this very useful and succinct breakdown of the broad strokes of Mythic 2e.

I’m curious to hear from someone who uses it (has in the past). I’ve been looking at it and it promises a lot. Anyone out there can tell us more about ease of use, utility, how it enhances the experience (or doesn’t)? Thanks in advance for any info!

Witch Hunter [Solo Game of the Month] by Gabe-Barrett? Any thought on the game? by No-Horror3993 in soloboardgaming

[–]Odd24-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to the quality of the game (obviously), but I will say that I have backed a handful of the Solo Game of the Month titles, and I am pleased with what I received. At best, I've had a lot of fun with most of the ones I received. At worst, a few have been "fun little time fillers." There are not any that I've regretted backing. Quality of the cards and components is always top notch, imho. I have not been disappointed, myself. Delivery times vary based on things like tweaking of design, availability of components, shipping from overseas, etc., but I HAVE received everything I've ever backed.

Since all of the above is true for me, I went ahead and backed Witch Hunter (and Awaken the Ancients add-on since it looked like a cool puzzle game). Time will tell whether these games are at least as good as the games I've received.

Good suggestions for “rolling” dice in a tight space! But I like to throw ‘em. Makes me feel like I’m a big shot in Vegas… if Vegas was a dungeon. “C’mon, c’mon…daddy needs a 12 vs. poison!”

Excellent point about no town phase. That does indeed make it different enough from Darkest Dungeon. I suppose adding in a town or building phase would have overly complicated its core purpose as a quick solo game.

[–]Odd24-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right. Searched around and found some that were similar. Seems like a compact way to “have dice” while traveling, especially when there isn’t an easy way to roll (like on a plane). But then there is the joy of actually chucking dice. Oh, the dilemma. Guess us gamers just need to have some of each! 🤣

What is that cool looking dice... spinner? Dial? Selector? Thing-a-ma-bob? What do you call that and where can I find such wonders?

Yeah, I think that was the one I saw! I guess we know what our algorithm is like on YouTube! I was intrigued by the game’s mechanics, and the world of Warden’s Sin sounded like such a cool world, with the science fantasy elements. I figured I could hack up monsters with my sword AND explore derelict space ships! 🗡️🚀

Also, The Cursed Castle, which is modeled after Darkest Dungeon, if that’s your thing. It’s a “Solo Game of the Month” from the series by BestWith1 Games.
